Am frustrated in my attempts with this family as my local library has only the indexes 1907- for births and I am some hours away from the city.
I am looking for the birth of John Bevan, b 1867-1868 possibly in Portland Estate. The marriage entry says William, but I can't establish if this is a SA birth or not without the indexes.
This John married Eliza Jane Burman in Port Pirie in 1891 and I have found their deaths( also photo) and one 2 year old son, but would also like to know the others please, I believe there were 5-6.

yes, robert I am sure that you have John's father William there.
I wasn't sure if the William name went down through the generations, it seems that John is the common pattern- but then, it has been a popular name for a very long time!

many thanks so far!!
With your help I am developing the line really nicely and have lots to go on.
We have 5 known children to John and Eliza(beth) nee Burman
Stanley John died as an infant 1893-1896
Maude b 1892
George Henry b 1896 m Daisy Palmer
Pearl b 1903
and John Stanley, an oral record only. 26.9.1916, Port Pirie
There is a John Stanley birth for 26.9.1916 to Maude Bevan, father of child not recorded, in Kent Town, Adelaide. There is a twin recorded Francis Humphrey Bevan.
Looking at Eliza's projected age in 1915 = 46/47
Looking at her daughter Maude's projected age in 1916= 24
So far I have seen no sign of a John Stanley being born to John and Eliza.
Questions:
do you think by 1915/1916 the indexes would be complete? ie when did SA begin compulsory registering of life events
is there a marriage by a Bevan male to a Maude in this timeframe?
cheers
Cathy
-
So far I have seen no sign of a John Stanley being born to John and Eliza.
There is a Stanley John Bevan may be he changed the name around there I have found that when been looking changed names around
Stanley John Bevan
b: 14 Jul 1893
Book/Page: 525/349
Father: John Bevan
Mother: Elizabeth Burman
Place Port Pirie S. Australia.

Bob that birth detail was given in reply no 1 by Redgum , I think Boydie is looking for a much later birth in 1915/1916
Roydie, I think you have solved your own puzzle the birth of John Stanley Bevan father not recorded mother Maude would indicate that possibly he was brought up thinking his grandparents were his parents, an often occurrence in those times.
There is a twin recorded Francis Humphrey Bevan.
not sure what you mean by this?
Jenn
-
Civil registration commenced in 1855 in SA and yes the 1915/1916 births would be complete

Will check for a possible later marriage as requested as the father's name would be known if married. Only marriage with the name Maud included was in 1896 but 1st given name Alice.

edit not by Cando's last post...now wondering who this Maud was.
I see by John Stanley Bevan's WW2 record he lists John Bevan as NOK.

I started posting that I was reasonably convinced Maude had twin sons out of wedlock but before I could hit post you clever sleuths had already been busy.I didn't want to jump to hasty conclusions.
I believe there were several homes for "women in trouble and their babes" in Adelaide at the time.
Does Kent Town register near Portland Estate?
(am new to SA myself, and very new to SA research so unsure)
The marriage for Maude looks good!
I see there are some Wallaroo Bevans but stumbling my way through known stuff so far I don't think the Wallaroo lot are "my" Bevans.
The plot thickens!!

the John Stanley of 1998 -is this a death notice??
His father George looks like being Maude 's brother.
I notice the Pearl appears in George Henry's daughter's name too, another sister.
The John we are most interested in will not appear in deaths in SA. He moved to other parts of the world in the 1950's.
These Bevans are very good at living to ripe old ages! ;)
-
the John Stanley of 1998 -is this a death notice??
Could be any of the following
Newspaper Deaths, Funerals, Lest We Forget & Memorials in the Adelaide Advertiser newspaper.
His father George looks like being Maude 's brother.
Yes his father George Henry Leslie is Maude's brother
I notice the Pearl appears in George Henry's daughter's name too, another sister.
Yes

I am wondering if there was a multiple birth in 1916 to Maud. There should be an M symbol in the index.
M. Multiple Birth. Multiple Births were recorded as one entry.
But instead there is a cross reference
X. Cross referenced Registration. Major Spelling Variation between Registrar and Informant. Confusion between given names and surnames and ambiguity of which parents surname is to be used for the child.
I think there was a change of given names ie Francis Humphrey became John Stanley.
What do other think?
Cando
-
I guess a look at John Stanley Bevan WW2 record would be informative but it is not digitalised, so you would have to pay to have it done around $25.00
Cando, you are no doubt correct about the birth cross references interesting indeed!
Those two certificates would be very interesting to see
Jenn
-
well spotted cando.
perhaps the grandparents legally adopted him and changed his name-
perhaps the Francis Humphrey was a hint towards to his father's name and Maud/ her parents decided against that idea after the birth was registered.
If that is the case and we have the same child, with two different names, the Francis Humphrey certificate will be no longer available.??
( that is the case in NZ where once changed by adoption by the natural father or elsewise the original certificate a-lthough still there to be seen on indexes- is no longer able to be issued)
intriguing stuff :D
I have some paperwork well worth buying in the near future
-
I just noticed that for $16.50 you can have a service record digitised on the website only. $25 for photocopy and inclusive in the price, the option to have the record digitised and placed the on website. You will find this if you proceed as to order.
Birth certs would be available. However you will only get the following information for births in South Australia the period
1908-1979
* Date and Place of Birth
* Name
* Father's name, Age, Occupation, Residence, Birthplace
* Mother's name, Age, Residence, Birthplace
* Year of parents Marriage
* Number of Issue Living and Deceased
* Informant
As there is no father's name on the index there will be no further information about him on the certificate.
No need to purchase expensive birth certs in SA. You can order a transcription for $15. Certs in South Australia are $38 - price increased on the 1 Jul 2008.
http://www.saghs.org.au/research.htm#transcription
I doubt there would have been a legal adoption in that period...I think the grandparents just raised the child as their own and often the mother was a 'sister'.
There are some good resource links at the top of the board..go to
Emigrants to Australia
>Australian Resources
>South Australian Resources.
Perhaps have a browse.
Cheers
