Just found your posting. In 1875, Fountain Villa, Waterside, Derry, was the home of William J. McCarter, JP, and his wife, Mary. They were the grandparents of my great-aunt, Norah (McCarter) Warbeke. You've correctly made a connection to J J Cooke, in that Cooke was the brother of Mrs. William McCarter, but I'm not aware that the Cookes owned the property; I believe that W J McCarter's will identified him as owner when he died from an accidental drowning. I can consult my files to see whether I can locate any references to household servants by name. W J McCarter was a capitalist, President of the Londonderry Gas Works, and a director of the northern branch of the RR. His son, William, owned and operated a peat farm for heating fuel.

Thank you kindly, aghadowey! I'll pursue the will. Years ago, I received the cemetery info from a group of local researchers, which was quite helpful.

aghadowey: I've managed to locate the wills. How do I locate "Fountain Villa" in the Valuation Revision books? It appears that I need a variety of place names that are unfamiliar to me. I know that the property is located in Waterside, County Derry, but the parish names, etc., to search? I'd also like to locate the Valuation Revision book entries for "Bruce Villa" in Castlerock, which was a small village on the coast. This was the home of William McCarter, Jr., his wife and my great-aunt.

You'll need the street address to find the Waterside property and I think Castlerock should find the other property.

Aghadowey: THANK YOU so much! This is quite helpful!! I don't believe that Robert McCarter of "St. Ives" would be related. However, Kathleen, Frederick Buick McCarter, and William Harold Raphael McCarter were all siblings of Aunt Norah. Matilda (Buick) McCarter was their mother. I recall my mother and grandmother speaking of each of them by name.

Fountain Villa, was/is located at the towards the top of Chapel Road/Fountain Hill, area of Londonderry, there are three large houses still standing, unsure of their vintage but they look Victorian, possibly, unsure which one was the original 'Fountain Villa', but I may have a more definitive answer in a day or two when I speak to someone who was born in the area.

Thank you, joemc. "Fountain Villa" was the one of the group of three that is closest to the corner of Chapel Road and the roundabout. Several years ago, a gentleman from Derry City (perhaps named Biggins) took photos of the family houses in Waterside as well as at Castlerock and sent them to me. The second house in was "Fountain Hill House," which was owned and occupied by Robert Cooke, brother-in-law to William McCarter, Sr., and the third house in was "Clifton Manse."

Ah, OK, I thought by your reply to aghadowey regarding the revision books you were unsure of the location of Fountain Villa.

No, simply unsure how to locate the specific entries in the on-line digitized valuation books through PRONI; however, I have since located them through a brute-force search.
