Hi All,
I'm trying to find some more detail about Reuben Grocock (Snr) in the 1841 & 1851 census records please.
From the 1871 Census, I calculated that he was born around 1823 and that he was a joiner. I'm trying to discover more about his parents if possible.
By the time of the 1851 census, he'd married Amelia Cooper and they had a son also called Reuben.
Thanks in advance

Hi Paul
Was Reuben from Nottinghamshire, if so I have found him in 1841 and will post the details.

Thanks for your efforts guys.
I think Suz has nailed the correct set of Grococks in 1851, as all the pieces fit. Amelia as Daughter in-law with grandson Reuben (who must have lost a few years by the time of the 1871 census!)
I'm kinda confused by the Grococks you found Evie as the address and main man are the same, but everyone else except for Reuben, is different. I guess John must have swapped wives / families somewhere along the line! Reuben's age is a couple or 3 years out, but I suppose that was fairly common back then!
Looks like I'm going to have to do a little digging to see exactly (!) what went on here.
Thanks again both!

I've found a record of death for a Sarah Grocock registered in June 1843 in Basford Notts.
I'm wondering if this could be John's first wife and Reuben's mother.
Dig, dig, dig....

Just found something that puts a spanner in the works
IGI Extracted Records Basford
Parents-John and Elizabeth
Sarah Grocock-22nd Jan 1815
Mary Ann Grocock-17th Dec 1820
Reuben Grocock-30th March 1823
Strangely they all fit with the family of John and Sarah in 1841 that Evie found but their Mother on baptism is Elizabeth? So are they the same person Sarah Elizabeth maybe? Or two totally different women?
other siblings Parents John and Elizabeth
James Grocock-15th Aug 1813
Mark Grocock-27th March 1825
Death-18th Sept 1826

My thoughts exactly. I was looking at that too when your message came through. Probably we need to find a baptism for Sarah to see what her full name is?

Yes its well strange baptisms state Mother is Elizabeth.1841 children fit and Father but Mother down as Sarah then 1851 same Father, same address Mother back to Elizabeth.
The marriage to Sarah Riley isnt the right one childrens dates dont fit and their is a John and Sarah having children from 1817 onwards in Basford.
So we need to find Elizabeths marriage to John Grocock around 1813 its not in Basford have checked shes from Bingham in the 1851 so a possible place to look.

One of my thoughts was that Sarah was John's sister as there is a Sarah Grocock on IGI parents John and Ann baptised 1793 Basford. I wonder if it is worth looking for Elizabeth somewhere. Without looking back on the census am I right in thinking 1841 does not state relationships?
Evie
Added - and 1780 and 1799 :-\

Yes youre right doesnt give relationships looks like that could be it .Well done

So we need to find Elizabeths marriage to John Grocock around 1813 its not in Basford have checked shes from Bingham in the 1851 so a possible place to look.
Unfortunately, IGI only has dates 1821-1836 for Bingham marriages.
