Title: Travelling People of Kent. 'Elliott'
Post by: shirlann on Tuesday 02 December 08 14:28 GMT (UK)
Hi,
I know this is something of a long shot, but can any one please tell me
if the name 'Elliott' is a travelers / fun fair name.
I am researching into my husbands side of the family.
He seems to think that when he was small hearing the family talking
about the 'Elliotts' being travelers/fun fair travelers/tinkers.
I am researching a Beatice Elliott born 1896. I have located one of her children's birth certificates which shows no Fathers name shown, only that a man called E.Elliott was present at the birth.(Could it be incest) Address given was East Road,
Belvedere, Kent.
Hoping some one can show me some light on the matter.
Thank you for reading.
Shirlann.

Hi Shirlann

Can you be sure that the "E ELLIOTT" who registered the birth was a man - I didn't think it normally showed the gender of the person who registered the birth ???

Thank you for your reply.
It never entered my head to think it was her mother.
She had 3 children all named Elliott, showing the same person present.
Thank you for that information.

Yes, it could be her mother, sister, sister in law, aunt or perhaps even a male.

With the address(es) that you have on the birth certificate (both place of birth and informant if they are different) you could ask Bexley Local Studies to look them up in the local street directories if you can't get there in person - these will show who was the head of the household in each property.  They will do up to 20 minutes for free which should be long enough to deal with a straightforward query like this.

http://www.bexley.gov.uk/localstudies/researchservice.html

After 1918 electoral registers are useful because they will show all the males over 21 and all the females over 30 in each household.

Hi there,
Probably stating the obvious here but following on from last post, in 1896 it would be very unlikely that a male would be present at a birth...........good luck

The address of East Road, Belvedere, ran through the centre of the Belvedere Marsh Gypsy Encampment. This was in existence there from around 1902 till the early 1950s.

You can read about the community here: www.24hourmuseum.org.uk/nwh_gfx_en/ART38565.html

Also, you do find Elliot/t as a Gypsy/Fairground name. Some Elliots used to run a coconut shy at Barnet Fair in the first decade of the 20th century and inter-married with one of the Gypsy families I'm interested in, the Drapers. Many of them travelled regularly into Essex and Kent, to the latter mainly for the hopping season.

Hi again Shirlann

It would be interesting to know the forename of the child on the birth certificate. There might be a clue there.

Best wishes

Sharon

My mum and dad grew up on the Marsh  on Occupation and East Road, and my cousin happened to ask if i knew elliotts on marsh yesterday. Dad said he knew of Solly and Lilley (probably Eliza as most Lilleys were Elizas) who had sons John and Solly and a couple of daughters. Thats all he could remember yesterday but i will ask him again. I think Lilley was a Lee. best wishes betty

Hi Brooksey,
Thank you for contacting me.
I really would like a copy of the death certificate for Beatrice Braine (Elliott).
May I ask what relation, if any, you are to the Braine's/Elliots's.
May I also say a  ' Big Welcome'  to the Rootchat site. The people on here are great always willing to help. Enjoy.       Shirlann.

Hi, I think you know who I am  :) .Beatrice was my grandmother on my mother's side. I could probably scan the certificate and email it but might be more reliable if I photocopied it and posted it to you as I have your address.
I will try and do it today.
