Hi Claypit
Are you sure about the place of birth for John?
I can't find him on any census pre-1872 with a POB as Spinkhill.
There is a 'right' aged John WOMACK with parents of those names and appx birth year in the 1851 and 1861 Census In both Census , this John b abt 1847 born Barlborough. Joseph & Mary also have among others, a son Ruben b abt 1853 Barlborough, daughter Mary b abt 1855 Spinkhill, son Francis b abt 1866 Spinkhill (by 1871 Joseph is deceased).
1851: HO107 / Piece: 2122 / Folio: 561 / Page: 7 - in Barlborough withim Reg district of Worksop
1861: RG9 / Piece: 2534 / Folio: 86 / Page: 7 - in Eckington within Reg District of Chesterfield.
1871 RG10 / Piece: 3618 / Folio: 64 / Page: 34 - in Spinkhill within Reg District of Chesterfield.
In 1881 : John's sister Mary is married to William HOLDEN and in their household as Boarders are: her 2 siblings Ruben 28 and Francis (Frank) 14 - plus a 10 yr old Sarah A WOMACK b Killamarsh DBY, and 4 year old Mary E WOMACK b abt 1877 Barlborough.
RG11 / Piece: 3441 / Folio: 83 / Page: 45 : in Eckington within Reg District of Chesterfield.
In 1891: John's sister Mary HOLDEN again has Mary E WOMACK in her household, listed as a Neice age 14, b abt 1877 Barlborough. Also there is Mary (HOLDEN's) brother Rueben WOMACK age 37
RG12 / Piece: 2647 / Folio 47 / Page 12 - in Barborough within reg district of Worksop
Is this Mary E in 1881 & 1891, the dau Mary Ellen of John and Maria (born 5 yrs after their marriage?) ?
Who is Sarah Ann? Could she be a sibling of Mary E? Killamarsh also comes under Chesterfield RD.
FREEBMD Marriage: Sep Qtr 1872 - John WOMACK, Joseph WOMACK and Maria HOUGHTON on same ref: 7b 932 - Chesterfield DBY . Also there is another groom and another bride - that's 5 on the same page - John * Joseph have seperate entries on the image. (and all 5 have been double checked/ keyed by FreeBMD). Is there a bride missing - or is there some ambiguity in John's name? What does the certificate for the marriage of John & Maria say about John . What is his occupation and address at the time of the marriage?
FREEBMD: DEATH: Dec Qtr 1879 - Maria WOMACK age 30 - Chesterfield DBY
Who was the informant of her death, the address of death, and what was the cause of death? Does it mention her marital status at all, ( eg: tt might sometimes say in occupation column if she was widow)
Mary Ellen WOMACK b.c1877
FREEBMD: BIRTH: cannot find in Worksop (or Chesterfield) Reg District? Or anywhere?
The closest I see is Mary Ellen HUMOCK, Sep Qtr 1876, Worksop (checked image too). A mistranscription on the original index?
FREEBMD: Marriage Mary Ellen WOMACK married William MACHIN in 1895 Chesterfield? And in 1901 is in Conisbrough Yorkshire with him and 3 children? Seems to be her - right age and POB:
What does that marriage cert say about her father?
Cheers

Thanks Liz :D Snap!
I couldn't see any other 'contender' for Mary Ellen besides that one for HUMOCK ??? could you?
I wonder if John and Maria had the awful luck of having babies die in infancy...
Having another look......
I think Sarah Ann WOMACk age 10 in 1881 is a sibling to Mary Ellen....... a half sibling born as Sarah Ann HOUGHTON Dec Qtr 1870 Chesterfield.
Wonder if John is with her and her mother in 1871? Can't find him in that Census yet?
Cheers

The question is - are these people Maria's parents - if so we have the link!

Hi Liz
We're on a roll.....we have a link - just found it: ;D
In 1861, the same Richard HOWTON is in Barlborough Notts (as was the 1871) listed as married but wife not there.
RG9 / Piece: 2422 / Folio: 57 / Page: 3 /
His eldest child in house is Maria HOWTON age 11, b City of F--dington, Nth America abt 1850.
This fits with the 1879 death of Maria WOMACK age 30.
There appears to be a grey area between Notts and Derbyshire, as far as Barlborough is concerned (more folk enumerated as being born in county of Notts than in Derbyshire). Reg Ditrict is always, Worksop though.
Cheers

so - I dont suppose Claypit was expecting a USA ancestor out of this...... ;D
-
;D Either that, or we've just spent a bit of time excersing our "genealogical detective genes" ;D
I'm not spotting Maria in 1871, nor John....but I could be missing it - half asleep at -- yikes.....2.15am. Oh, my, there'll be none of this in the morning ! 8) :P ;D You'll notice I'm getting sluggish as i didn't wrtie out the full Census, bad Ambly!
I have to go to bed! I can't help but have a feeling there is more to the "overseas" connection than Maria having been born in the US....I wonder what John did do for a living.
Night!

Thankyou lizdb and AMBLY for all your detective work that you've both put in today sorry I've not got back sooner but I've been out at work all day needs must!!AMBLY asked if I was sure about John Womacks place of birth well I made a mistake I was looking at a copy of his marriage certificate that said he lived at Spinkhill at the time of his marriage, but I do have copies of the 1851&1861 census that say he was born in Barlborough, but after that info on John (my Great Grandad) the search went cold.
You said it would be interesting to see what info they gave on their marriage cert well it says D O M 4th July 1872 (I wonder if that date signifies the American connection)John Womack age 25 years, bachelor, occupation Carter(whatever that is),residence Spinkhill Eckington (father Joseph Womack dec)a farmer.
Maria Houghton (spelt differently to the one you have but I suppose thats how they get mis-transcribed)age 23 years, spinster, no occupation, res,Spinkhill Eckington,(father Richard Houghton a coal miner.
I'm surprised to see that Maria was born in North America.
I suppose Sarah Ann could have been Mary Ellen's half sister,Mary Ellen was my Grandma and she named one of her daughters Sarah Ann,she must have named her after her.
Anyway thanks again for all your hard work.
