Title: 1861, 1871, & 1881 Census Liverpool
Post by: iansmith on Sunday 06 February 05 09:18 GMT (UK)
I am trying to trace my gt. grandmother, Hannah Corlett b.1859/60 in Liverpool, according to the 1901 census.

I have checked I.O.M. census records for 1861 & 71 and can find no trace of her. She married Robert Smith in around 1880ish. (No details of marriage record).

They had 3 sons James, Robert, and Colin born in Liverpool between 1882-89.

In the 1901 Census they were living at 85 Hornby Road, Bootle, Liverpool.

Any information would be much appreciated.

Thanks Ian.

I'm sorry but I'm confused about a few things in your posting.  There must be something that makes you think her parents and family moved to the Isle of Man fairly soon after she was born but you don't mention what and when you think they returned to Liverpool, presumably sometime around the date of her marriage if the children were born in the 1880's.

There are 512 Hannah Smiths in Lancashire in the 1901 census so it will take us sometime to check them all to identify the family, we could do a look up for 1891 and 1871 but need at least some dates of birth.  Can I suggest that you paste the WHOLE information from the 1901 census here and we can take it from there.  You can search the 1881 census youself at www.familysearch.org

I apologise if my original query was confusing - first post on this site.

I am trying to find out a little more about my gt. grandmother Hannah Corlett.

I have found Hannah Smith (nee Corlett) and family's entry in the 1901 Census. It tells me that she was born in 1859/1860 in Liverpool.

I am trying to find entries in the 1861 and 1871 censuses to give me some information about her parents etc.

I have checked the 1881 Census on familysearch.org but cannot find anything. Her husband Robert Smith was a marine engineer so it's possible they might have been abroad at the time of the census?

Thanks
Ian

Forgive me for being a bit pedantic but people weren't always truthful about their ages, either through illiteracy or some other reason.  It is often easier to try to get a view on the accuracy of a date of birth by attempting to trace through later censuses and I would have tried to do that by checking the 1891 which may have been easier with the ages of the children and if possible also finding the marriage.

The reason I'm saying this is that I've had a look in the 1871 and there are no Hannah's who are obviously her.  You need an address to search for in 1861 as there is no name index, so that doesn't appear to be an option for you at this stage.

You have found them in 1901, but I can't without further details so can proceed no further with searching 1891.

Point taken Mary,

The information on the 1901 census was as follows:-

Hannah Smith    Wife M 41    born Liverpool
James E Smith    Son S 19    born Liverpool
Robert Smith    Son  15    born Bootle
Colin F Smith    Son  12    born Bootle

Living at 85 Hornby Road, Bootle, Liverpool

Robert Smith, Hannah's husband, was not on the census at this address - possibly abroad?

Hello and welcome to rootschat,

I can find no 'obvious' Hannah Corlett's as other rootschatters have mentioned, and I'm a bit unclear about the I.O.M. connection, however there are some possibilities:

1881 - Anna Corlett, unm, 23, servant, boot shop assistant, born Ramsay, IOM living in Liverpool with a Quilliam Family (head is a Boot Manufacturer).  There are some other Anna/ie Corlett possibilities too.

In 1871 there is this family - with an Ann Corlett of the correct age and born Liverpool and parents born IOM.  They are living in Everton, so that may fit as well.

Amelia Corlett 42  Isle of Man, Isle of Man Wife
Amelia Corlett 15  Liverpool, Lancashire, England Daughter
Ann Corlett 11  Liverpool, Lancashire, England Daughter
Emily Corlett 9  Liverpool, Lancashire, England Daughter
Henry Corlett 4  Liverpool, Lancashire, England Son
John Corlett 12  Liverpool, Lancashire, England Son
Mathew Corlett 8  Liverpool, Lancashire, England Son
Thomas Corlett 44  Isle of Man, Isle of Man Head
Thomas Corlett 17  Liverpool, Lancashire, England Son
William Corlett 19  Liverpool, Lancashire, England Son

Thomas Corlett is a Baker

If any of these look likely, can provide full census details.

Regards
Jonathan

1891 the details don't vary much, living at 19 Boston Street, Bootle.

Robert Smith Head M 34 Marine Engineer Lancs Liverpool
Hannah Wife M 31 " "
James E Son 9 Scholar " "
Robert Son 5 " " Bootle
Colin F Son 2 " "

However, interestingly enough the family next door in No. 17 could be related, the enumerator actually dittoed the Smith name on from those above and Alfred's occupation is interesting.  I know they can't be brothers but maybe cousins?
Robert A Smith Head M 25 Postman Scotland
Esther Wife M 22 Cheshire Threapwood
Elizabeth M daur 2 Lancs Bootle
Alfred B brother S 19 Clerk in Engineers Office CC Cheshire Birkenhead

Now another thing I've done is search the indexes for 1859 and 1860 and there is no birth of Hannah Corlett listed in any quarter of those years.  When I mean searched the indexes I have looked at the images themselves on http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ so not relying on somebody else's transcription.  There are none available on there, however, for December quarter 1858, so if you wanted to search further dates yourself you can do on http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/ where there is a complete set, however, it is a pay site.  You could also search for the marriage on there too.

You don't say how you know Corlett is her name.  Have you considered that she was married previously?  I know there wouldn't have been much time but that's not to say she wasn't.  Do you have any of the children's birth certificates?  One of these should confirm her surname.
Name:    Smith, Colin Ferguson
Record Type:    Births
Quarter:    June
Year:    1889
District:    West Derby
County:    Lancashire
Volume:    8b
Page:    401

Hope the above is of some help

Thanks again for all your help Mary,

Interesting to see that both Robert Smith and Hannah were born in Liverpool. My father always told me they were both born in the I.O.M.

Hannah had a niece May Corlett who was born and lived in the I.O.M. I have managed to trace some details about her.

I have checked 1837online for Hannah's birth and found nothing between 1858-1862. I also checked the marriages between 1875-1883 and again found nothing.

I'll take your advice and get a birth certificate for one of the children to hopefully confirm her maiden name.

Thanks again
Ian

Jonathan's views are also very interesting as Hannah is often known as Ann/ie.

I don't know whether you want to keep this detail on file but the only Robert and Hannah marriage I can find is 1881
SMITH Robert ELLIOTT Hannah Walton, St. Mary Liverpool 2012WD/11/457 and if you trace them back in 1881 strangely enough the mother is from the Isle of Man
Robert ELLIOTT   Head   M   Male   57   Cumberland, England   Mariner
Margaret ELLIOTT   Wife   M   Female   57   Isle of Man, England
Hannah ELLIOTT   Daur   U   Female   21   Liverpool
Robert D. HUME   Grandson      Male   3   Liverpool

Source Information:
  Dwelling   28 Juliet St
  Census Place Kirkdale, Lancashire, England
  Family History Library Film   1341882
  Public Records Office Reference   RG11
  Piece / Folio   3683 / 110
  Page Number   18

Now if I check them in 1871 they are at 50 Torr Street, Kirkdale presumably Robert Elliott is away at sea.  The scan is dreadfully faint so I've done my best with a couple of the names.
Margaret Elliott Head M 44 Isle of Man
Margaret Binnie?? daur M 19 Scholar Liverpool
Thos Elliott Son Unm 13 Liverpool
Hannah Elliott Daur Unm 11 Scholar Liverpool
Jane Cammell ?? Mother Wid 78 Isle of Man.

The Isle of Man connection is ..... definitely bothering me, although I can't find an Elliott/Corlett marriage

I have just obtained my gt. grandfathers birth certificate, which shows me that his mother was Hannah Elliott, not Corlett which we had always been led to believe.

A quick search on the LDS IGI comes up with a marriage between Robert Elliot and Margaret Cannell in 1847 in Liverpool. Maybe the same as Jane Cammell?? in the 1871 census?

Could anyone please check the 1851 & 1861 censuses for Robert & Hannah Elliott and their family to confirm children & addresses?

Thanks Ian
