Title: SIMPSON - Dorothy & Mary
Post by: snow1685 on Saturday 29 November 08 00:17 GMT (UK)
hi I am looking for any information on Dorothy and Mary Simpson. They may be sisters.

Mary married William Anderson around 1865.
They had a son named John Anderson in Dec 1865 Usworth.

Dorothy married Thomas Harland sept 1869 in Auckland.
They had a daughter named Hannah Harland on 10 Sept 1872 in Tudhoe.

Only info I have is from the Church of Latter Day Saints which indicates that both Mary & Dorothy may have been born in Oct/Nov 1842 in Heworth, Durham.

Possible parents for both women are Robert Simpson and Ellen Unknown/ Eleanor Elliot who look to have been married about 8 May 1837 St. Helen Auckland.

Any information would be helpful. Thankyou.

On the 1871 census - there are 2 Thomas Harlands married to a Dorothy and one is in Tudhoe.  However - that Dorothy was only 20 and b Wingate

The other couple were in St John Durham and that Dorothy was only 19 so neither link to an 1842 birthyear

Could this marriage be a possibility for Dorothy

Marriages September qtr 1859

Simpson  Dorothy     Darlington  10a 29    to either John McLeod  or William Seed

EDIT
Checked 1861 and that Dorothy was 38 and married previously as there is a 12 yr old James Simpson

The only Mary married to a William Anderson on the 1871 near to an 1842 birthyear was b 1845 in Consett.  Eldest child is 4 so I suspect that is your 1865 marriage

Just a little comment - you stated you had Dorothy and mary from LDS site -born 1842 - that is the date they were christened NOT d.o.b. - sometimes baptisms would take place a while after birth and often siblings would be baptised together.

By the way - Dorothy is listed as Dorothy Ann

You may be right, it is all very sketchy with these two women right now. i'm just going off the fact that they have the same parent names and she's the only one I can find of the right place and time.

If you find another that fits feel free to add her to the mix.

Is John Anderson 1865 usworth your GG Grandfather?

If so what census do you have him on?

maybe we can work backwards - just to double check

Yes John Anderson is my Great, Great Grandfather.

I have a birth from the free BMD that is John Anderson Dec 1865 Durham. His marriage cert has Usworth listed as his birthplace.

I too have the 1881 census where he was boarding with Anne Swan as a 16 year old (assuming it's him) and born in Usworth.

There is also another possible 1881 census with the household of
William S Anderson 41
Mary A Anderson 48
John E Anderson 16
Mary Jane Anderson 13
Willaim T Anderson 10
Alice A Anderson 8
Jane Armitage (wife's mother) 79

Except Mary's age doesn't fit and neother does her mother's name. But i've kept it just incase those things are wrong.

On the LDS there is a marriage between William Anderson and Mary Simson April 18th 1861 Central District, Glasgow, Lanark Scotland. But I think that's the only one I could find.
~~~~~~~~-----------
The family connections are that John Anderson is my great great grandfather, he married my great great grandmother Hannah Harland.
John's parents are William Anderson and Mary Simpson and Hannah's parents are Thomas Harland and Dorothy Simpson. As far as I can tell they are all from Durham.
John and Hannah's marriage cert has both the father's occupations as miners.
John and Hannah were married in Australia in 1889. He was recorded as being 24, while she was 16.
~~~~~~~~------------------

From the free BDM is have a birth of Hannah Harland in Sep 1872 in Durham.

Her marriage cert has her birthplace listed as Tuddhoe Village, County Durham.

I also have a marriage of Thomas Harland and Dorothy Simpson in Sep 1869 in Auckland, Durham.

Also when you found the Dorothy Ann on the LDS, I must have had that recorded before as well, because I have come across a census that has Thomas Harland married to an Ann Harland and daughter Hannah, age 3 (plus son John, other daughter Ann and border George Clewes). I suppose she could be eluding us by going by her second name. Or it could be a different person.

Thomas, Dorothy and Hannah all died in Australia. Thomas and Dorothy were the witnesses on Hannah and John's marriage cert in 1889 so they must have been in Australia by then.

To snow1685.  You show in your interests Banister-Waterloo and Collier-Liverpool - I think that these are some of my interests too.

James and Martha Banister were my great-grandparents who emigrated to Australia with their daughter Alice in 1854, arriving early 1855.  Their daughter Martha was born and died on the voyage.  My link is through their daughter Hannah (my maternal grandmother).  I have some information on James' parents, Thomas Ban(n)ister and Alice Ball (not Martha as shown in the Australian immigration records) and on Martha Collier's parents, Daniel Collier and Hannah Appleton.

Hi Bill

Sorry for the late reply, I've been in the UK and haven't looked at the family tree in a while.

James & Martha are my Great Great Great Grandparents, they are buried in a Dungog cemetery, NSW about 30mins from where we live.

All I have on James & Martha is bits and pieces. I had James parents as Thomas Banister and Alice Unknown and Martha's parents as Samuel or Daniel Collier and Susannah or Hannah Unknown, so that matches up with what you are saying. It would be very helpful to have more information on this side of the family.

My link to them is through their daughter Margaret.
