Can anyone read these place names (apart from Briscoe)?
I think the bottom 2 are the same place. The top right could be Mearbeck (near Settle) but I'm not 100% convinced. :-\
Some of the area I'm researching used to be in Yorkshire but is now in Durham.
Thanks

Hello
I think the second one might be Briscoe?
or Bruscoe?

Sorry I am useless I didn't read you post you already have that one!!

Haha! Yes, I was impressed by your speedy response though!
-
The last one is West ******* Bank. Do you think it might begin with S?
-
The enumerator's handwriting is terrible and varies a lot but I've looked on a few pages and it looks like an S.
-
I'm looking on here
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/Where/M.html
The first one on the left is Bootham which is in York I think
Maybe they should have had a handwriting test
-
I'm really stuck on the rest....
I think you are right with Meerbeck.
The only possibility I can come up for the other is Scoon Bank near the Durham Yorkshire border in Teesdale.
Maybe someone else might have an idea?

Bootham... that makes sense, cheers!
The West *** Bank?? place is really bugging me. not sure about Scoonbank, but then again, I've no other alternatives.
-
Hm... Scoonbank is definitely in the right place though. I think you're right. Even despite the handwriting.
-
Perhaps by default then?
If you squint at it you can just about see it!!

Scoon Bank is in the same parish as some of my other ancestors! Brilliant!
Thanks Claire, that's given me plenty to go on

Hi,
You might find this list useful:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/Where/index.html
Have you tried looking at a later census to see if they're written more clearly? Sometimes they were written by the enumerator just the way they sounded

Lol, just realised you've just solved another big mystery Claire!
I found a website which claimed my ggg-granddad's daughter was born in "West Skeen, Bank, Transvaal, South Africa".
I spent weeks trying to find out why my ancestors would have been in the Transvaal in 1800, trawling through passenger lists, all to no avail...
-
Lol ;D
I often get people in the Western Sahara in Durham.....
Or Lechtenstein in Leicestershire
Grand!!!
-
Thanks Barbara, that's really useful, I'll save it as a link :)

These transcription errors usually come about from the use of drop-down lists by the transcribers. They type in the first few letters and the list 'suggests' a possbile placename which is very easy for the transcriber to select. ESH is the three letter country code for Western Sahara, see:

How about this place?
SCOON BANK, in the parish of Romaldkirk, wapentake of Gilling West; 6 miles WNW. of Barnard Castle.
I was using that GENIKI index of places in Yorkshire.

The first one is Boos Wood ( Booze Wood ). There is a Booze Wood in Baldersdale, west of Cotherstone Nr. Barnard Castle. There is also Scoon Bank and Mere Beck, all within 3 or 4 miles of each other.
