Assisting Bexhill Museum with WW1 reseach, it is worthwhile broadcasting an appeal on Rootschat for any info that members may have regarding WW1 and our local history at Bexhill on Sea, East Sussex (UK), including Cooden, where there was a trench warfare school, a hospital and in the general area, a very large Canadian contingent.
A hundred years previous, the locals were outnumbered by Germans - but that is entirely another story!
Regards to all.

I have an autograph book belonging to my great aunt - filled in during her time nursing at Behill-on-Sea in WW1 - might it be of any interest? If so I could look it out. Amanda.

There were two military hospitals in the area. One was at 13/15 Cantelupe Road, Bexhill, which provided 36 beds for other ranks. The other was Cooden V.A.D. Hospital, Clavering Walk, Cooden, with 84 beds for other ranks. There are quite a few images online of the latter, and it looks to be a hutted hospital on the edge of the golf course.

Hello Amanda and Sue,
Thank you for your replies.
Amanda, I will PM you as your great aunt's autograph book would be of great interest to the Museum.
Sue, thanks for the heads up (we are aware of Cantelupe Road, thank you). I will set to and investigate the images of the Cooden Hospital.
Much obliged

I have recently begun an independent research project on the link between Bexhill and Canada. I am gradually beginning to build up material which I will be happy to share with the museum once complete. I have already spoken to the museum and there is scant information available on the Canadian link to the town so an increased holding would be most welcome.
There is more about me and the project here - www.canadiansinbexhill.wordpress.com. Apologies for the stuff on the site about Maritime Union. It relates to my PhD and has recently become somewhat of a topic in Canada so I am diverting people through the page to access relevant info.
