Post by: Bizzylizzy on Tuesday 25 November 08 14:06 GMT (UK)
Hello everyone

Yes this is the last one, could you wonderful people give this picture a thorough working over, it's a bit grim and I would like to print a 7x5 photo from it if that is at all possible.

Thank you

Well I have the original booth skewed and sat on the right place...looks fine. So now I'll work on what's left of the picture...
Must admit I find these such a challenge, and I know it isn't the actual picture, well not all of it, but it comes up good.

I look at it this way, Mike, if you don't push yourself, you don't improve.
I didn't know how to 'skew' till I did these three pictures. I feel quite comfortable with it now, though it is still pretty hit or miss as to getting it the right shape. Luckily with these, I just had to make one shape fit on the other.

Too kind Paula :o

I did not get the lettering over the entrance, and there are lion heads over the pictures.

Did you see the man up the ladder, he was a surprise?

No, I didn't see him, Mike, or sure as heck I would have put him in. Well done.

Mike

Very well done, don't be to hard on yourself, remember not only did you see the man on the ladder, but by her own admission there was a little cheating involved on the last 2, (the 1st one was brilliant).

If you would like, I'll post the first 2 again for you ;D.

Congratulations it's a nice job

Thank you all ever so much

Yes, thanks for the compliments folks, BUT this is not true picture restoration, as much has been imported to make it look right. Hence my psuedo apology. I was told quite bluntly on another forum you change nothing, you add nothing, you work with what is there if it is not there paint it black! These were the originators of the  "colouring like child's crayons" quote........

However if this patch up helps to reflect the mood and story of the original  in some way it meets a need.

I await the damning criticism from the purists who so far have not arrived on the string.

Oh dear I'm turning into Victor Meldrew.

As I say on the BBC Messageboard....
Oh....LITTLE ROUND THINGS!
Mine isn't yer actuall photo... it's a twist on photo number one, transplanted.
This picture is virtually hopless to do by the correct means....
Improvisation is called for.

The last sentence is spot-on in my view. We would all agree that in a crime-scene photograph one shouldn’t add a couple of guns or anything, and if this photo was for a ‘Fairground Historical Society' a lot of care should be taken – but in a photo such as this for the purely personal interest of a fellow poster, I truly believe that it is perfectly acceptable to recreate missing areas. Provided one states that that is what has been done – as you did.

(I actually also believe that the same should be done with ruined castles and the like, with appropriately marked stones – but that’s another story. ;D)

Excellent restores Paula and Mike.

A few more filters and the original gets a bit nearer - nothing much added nothing taken away.

What say you?

Mike
You have worked so hard on this pic, I hope you have achieved what you wanted to achieve from your efforts.

You are right about changing details in order for the picture to work, and you have made quite an impressive Boxing Booth out of what was a pretty grim scan.

This picture of yours will be pinned on the office notice board for inspiration,as a reminder that one can always do better if they look at the job again.

You are an inspiration to us all.

Thank you

Liz

Black and white as requested. Yellow now toned to match an actual sepia print.

I apologise for multiple posts that are frowned on by most strings however this was not a tutorial simply a very difficult restore that evolved through extensive trial and error, advice, and a bit of luck.

Where are the original posts you mention earlier Liz/Paula I'd like a look, I might just learn something.

P.s got the washing done at last, cleaned up a bit and made the bread so Marg has withdrawn her divorce request. :P

Hi Folks

Call me daft but I prefer the black and white one too, much more authentic and most beautifully done!

Thanks for that Mike it is nice to see it!  The colours are fun, but they didn't have coloured pics when this was taken I think!

World wasn't black and white, Rabbit, bit of the back to reality stuff.
Pictures aren't all that old, actually, and there was always tinting.
Title: Re: 3rd and final Gage Boxing Booth

With most old restores I colour first to get the variety of tones then convert to sepia or black and white.

We respect everybodies view, and all suggestions are considered.

At least we have not had the old style pedantic outbursts that usually accompanied any slight deviation from the "mend it, post it once and no discussion" faction.
By re-posting I have broken the unwritten rules again. Regretably in the past I have met with such unwarranted criticism and have even withdrawn from RC repairs for a time.

Might be thick, but I don't understand that, Mike. I like to see a picture develop.

As to the discussions, apart from when us mad lot from the BBC Messageboard get kicked out of our pub and had nowhere to go at Christmas, Discussions on Photos was one of the reasons dee opened the Tea Room, so that we could talk about them in peace. Of course it has taken on a life of it's own since and become a micellanious Photo Gallery.
