I am trying to locate information on
Robert David Corrie who went to the Gilbert Islands in the South Pacific c 1859.
His mother and siblings migrated to Sydney, Australia in approx 1855.
He married a native lady in the Gilberts and had family there.
-
Dunscore, welcome to rootschat.
Which country was responsible for the Gilbert Islands in 1859? Maybe there are records still extant from the 19th C and they are lodged with that country... Just a thought as I have no idea of family hostory in relation to there. It's a hard one it would seem.

Hi Charlotte,
I think possibly Germany may have been involved with the Gilberts at the time, although it was under control of Britain as from 1892. It became independent in 1979.
Cheers,
Dunscore
-
So the records for this period may be in Germany? How did the Brits come to run the place then in 1892? No wars then? Might give a clue as to where theearlier records are, which is the reason I'm asking.
charlotte
-
Hi Dunscore
I believe that the Gilberts wwere formerly known as the Kingsmill Islands in the 19th Century, and became a British Protectorate in 1892, then in 1915 a British colony.
During WW2 they were invaded in 1941 by the Japanese, who were eventually defeated by US troups.
In 1979 the Gilberts became the independent nation of Kiribati.
I didn't find any mention of German rule there. This doesn't exactly answer your question of where to search for records, I know.
Gillg
-
Thanks CharlotteCH and Gillg,
You are right Gillg about the Protectorate in 1892 and Independence in 1979. My g. uncle was actually a witness to the signing of the Proclamation, according to the website info on the G. Is.
I have looked for BDM records at the PRO and GRO in London, obviously tried the G.Is. (I think it is all too hard for them as I doubt they have ever had anyone ask for them in the past) and Fiji. The lass at the latter, was helpful and said they are now kept in NZ. Gave me a contact there. Although we exchanged a couple of emails, it seems to have fizzled out and I am no further advanced!
I know it is a challenge, but one I hope to sort eventually. According to an article in a Pacific Is. magazine I have from 1969, his daughter who was still alive then, said Robert Corrie had 12 children. First wife died in childbirth with their 6th and then he remarried and had another 6!!
I "found" a g. grandson of Robert Corrie a couple of months ago in Qld. but they do not have much info on his g. grandfather unfortunately.
Cheers,
Dunscore
-
Is there anything in the idea of asking on the NZ Board where the records are kept? Once you know that then you might be able to get a lookup from SKS or a reference Library might help.
charlotte
-
As the records that you need are probably in NZ I am going to move your post there in case anyone can help, even though the family eventually migrated to Australia.
Rick :)
-
I believe the records of BDM (post 1877) for the Gilbert Islands are kept at the Western Pacific High Commission (presumably in Auckland). A gentleman from from the Auckland University was going to check (or have someone do it for him) for me, but that was weeks ago and I have heard nothing since.
I know some of the births will not appear, as they are pre 1877, but most I think would be afterwards, certainly all children from the second marriage and at least a couple from the first marriage.
I believe Robert David Corrie died c.1915 according to the magazine article, but I have found a couple of dates in that same article that I know are incorrect. His (then) 81 year old daughter may have been a bit muddled with dates!
Cheers,
Dunscore
-
I was just looking at the information on Western Pacific High Commission and the person to contact there is (*). He is the gentleman I mentioned above, so unless there is somewhere else that someone might know about, I would not bother to contact him at this point in time. I just thought there might be someone else who could help other than (*).
Regards,
Dunscore

Hi Dunscore,
Have you checked the IGI? If you enter South Pacific as a region there are a few CORRIES including an Alec CORRIE born 1874, Kiribati, mother Fionisi.
He married Maria WAI in Suva, Fiji in 1910.
There is also an Alexander CORRIE born 1903, Suva, Fiji who married Afalua Roasarita Malifa SKELTON in 1923. They had a daughter Ruby Agnes CORRIE, born Suva, 1924, died in Auckland NZ in 1997.
Cheers,
Stephanie
-
Hi Kea,
What a breakthrough - on your part! I had not checked the IGI - was not aware it could be done online. I have just looked but cannot find what you found. It brought up the page "Family Search" and I put in Corrie (no Christian names), left "event" as "any" and year range as 1860 - 1920. When I put in South Pacific as region, I came up with one Correa in Mexico!!
Tried Kiribati - in several forms, Fiji likewise, Gilbert Is. same and all came up with 0 records. What am I doing wrong please?
The Alex Corrie you found with birth 1874 would be my g. uncle's son. I know OF his grand-daughter who is currently travelling around NZ, but have not been able to make contact with her. You said he married someone with the name Wai. I know that name is in the family by marriage too, as I have seen it before, although I thought her maiden names was Knowles.
If you can tell me what I am doing incorrectly, I would be most grateful!
Cheers,
Dunscore
-
without a first name you can't enter anything else except REGION,
So go back enter CORRIE and Region, SW Pacific.
:)
-
Hi Dunscore
Follow steps
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp
eg Enter ALEC CORRIE
Then search results, right hand side is summary CLICK on IGI SOUTH/WEST PACIFIC
It is a members submission
If you just enter CORRIE then again on Rhandside are 25+ results
Bye

Hi Dunscore,
Sorry - I've been out for the evening - but I see that Mk2 and Althea have helped you.
I just entered surname Corrie, then chose Region: Southwest Pacific and Country: Pacific Islands from the drop down menus.
Good luck. Let us know how you get on.
Stephanie :)
-
Hi Kea,
Not sure I did it exactly as was described but after a bit of a hassle, found Alexander b. about 1874. He is definitely Robert Corrie's son as the year would be about right. I could not find any of the other 11 children though which was a bit surprising.
The Alexander b. 1903 would be related I feel sure. There are 6 Corries listed in the Fiji white pages and I have been in contact with one of them recently and they were related. The other 5 probably are also.
The Alex Corrie marriage to Maria Wai is interesting. I see she was born in Tonga about 1882. I had letter from as relative a couple of weeks ago and her grandfather was Alexander Corrie who married Wai Lolo Moli and she says this is a Tongan name.
Ruby Agnes Corrie was b. 1924 and her father was Alexander too.
I am at the point where I think all the Alexander Corries from the South Pacific region are probably related to me!! When they have a family reunion in Suva late next year, with my Scottish complexion, I will stand out in the crowd!!
The Corries were originally from Scotland. All migrated to Australia except Robert who went to the Gilbert Is. I would just like to know when all the 12 children were born, although I have a rough idea of two of the girls, as one did an article for a Pacific Is. magazine aged 81 in 1969 and the other died in Sydney (sent here for schooling) in 1882 aged 8 years. She would have been b. c.1874. Wonder if she was a twin of Alexander who was also b. about 1874?
Thanks for your help.
Cheers,
Dunscore
-
Hi Dunscore,
Glad you got there in the end! It is a pity that only one of the 12 children is there - and interesting that Alex's father wasn't named.
There are a lot of Australian Corries on the IGI too - perhaps some of them are yours too?
Cheers,
Stephanie

Alexander David Corrie to SKELTON Western Samoa

Hi Dunscore
As I have mentioned in my previous message to your other posting, I would clarify a few thigs which my grandfather told us.
Alexander Corrie (not sure of d.o.b) travelled from the Gilbert ISlands to the Ellice Islands and married a native lady -Fetukula - they had 2 daughters Samalia and Meli (Mary). He went back to the Fiji Islands and later asked Fetukula to come over there.
They did not take their children as they were travelling around.
Samalia was my great grandmother. Names such as Agnes, Elizabeth are all in our family.
One of my grand father's brother is still alive and live in Tuvalu (Ellice Islands).
It was possible Alexander (Alec) married a native from Fiji as there is an extended Corrie family in Fiji whom our family from Tuvalu stay with when passing through.
I just hope this helps you a little bit with your searching.
Yours sincerely,
Silou

Talofa, my name is Viiga and my father's name is (*). My father's mother is Samalia and SAmalia's father is Alec Corrie.
Just like what Silou has shared with you and just for some minor informations, Alec's wife is Fetukula but in those days she was usually called Fetu. As also mentioned by Silou that Alecs went back to Fiji, is true but just to add on some informations that i receive from my dad, he said that when Alec went back to Fiji he married a Tongan lady but he don't know the name, and as for Fetu she also got married but no idea of whom she got married to.
As far as i am concern, my father is still alive and he is the one who is asking me to search for these family name, i have given him some information's that i have found and as far as i have found in here is just the same information's as what my father has been telling me.
As mentioned by Silou, my grandmother has a sister who is Meli [ Mary ]. He also told me that Alec has a brother in Fiji and his name is (*)and they have one sister called (*). (She) has families in Kiribati. My father also told me that the Corrie family also exist in Kiribati.
If anyone can tell me more or want to share more with me about this family i wolud be more happy to be in contact with them and also for the sake of my father.
He is 78 years old now and looking forward to hear more about the Corrie family!!!
Fakafeta lasi, & thanks very much for sharing,

viiga

hi,I'm from Mackay,Qld and very briefly just in regards to robert corrie.Robert Corrie was the name of my great great great grandfather. From what I was told by my elders in my family was that he and his brother James came directly to Australia from Scotland in the 1800's.'That' Robert recided on Badu Island and married my g.g.g.grandmother Lily Savage, who's mother was a full blood torres strait islander called 'iaga' and her father was Maivanga Savage from Niue Islands.James Corrie the other brother went abroad to fiji, and I am aware of our cousins in fiji and they know us,but unfortunately we don't keep in contact anymore,I know of my aunty over there called 'lola bidowa'. I have seen a very old headstone of Robert Corrie in a photo that my great aunt has aswell. Maybe this is a totally different Robert Corrie........
-
Hi sala,
The 'lola bidowa' does she live in Qld and is in her 70's?

Greetings everyone,
I'm new here as a result of searching for information my mom seeks about her grandfather Robert Corrie, and I think this may be it. I posted information on one of Dunscore's post. My mom is the daughter of Mita Milne Corrie who is the daughter of Robert Corrie. Mom was really happy and sad hearing of this site and topic about her grandfather and the Corrie family around the world. We live in the Mariana Islands. We would like to hear from Dunscore and the information he seeks. Thanks and take care.
-
Greetings to you too farmertom from OZ,
Can you tell me a bit more about the Robert Corrie you seek,as much history briefly that you might know. And where abouts is Mariana Islands?
-
Hi Sala,
Thanks for responding. Well, my mom seeks information on her grandfather Robert Corrie, father to her mother Mita and sister to the names Dunscore listed; Charlotte, Sarah, etc., which my mom is aware of. She said she has not met any of her mom's sisters/brothers and their children. She said her mom told her that one or several of her sisters and/or brothers went to australia for schooling while her mom stayed behind in the Gilberts. The Robert Corrie that went to the Gilbert Islands and disappeared at sea. One of my brothers and uncle already met the Corrie family in Fiji. I need to write down the detailed information my mom is providing me so that I can post those information.
The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands is a U.S. territory in the north pacific. We live on the island of Rota about 50 miles north of Guam (another U.S. territory). Thanks again Sala, I appreciate your response.
-
thanks farmertom,
It's good to know all this info. Keep me posted how you go but also what was your Robert Corries nationality because mine was scottish?
-

Hi Nadia, I have a question to ask if you don't mind. Since your gt.grandmother's father was Robert Corrie and mother Lydia Milne of the Gilbert Isles., identical to my granny's (Mita) parents, my mom asks what's your gt.grandmother's name? Thanks.
-
thanks farmertom,
It's good to know all this info. Keep me posted how you go but also what was your Robert Corries nationality because mine was scottish?
I am unable to confirm the nationality issue. I've heard Scottish, Irish but then a Kiribati history doc indicate British. I would think that the eldest of the elders of Robert Corrie's descendants have the answer to that question, assuming there was not more than one Robert Corrie sailing around Kiribati.
-
farmertom,
Just wondering...is your mother Marygrace "Leenwut"? If so, I am her brother Alexander's grand daughter.

hi viiga, Greetings from Australia. Just checking that the Alexander Corrie your talking about is the family from fiji,Aunty Lolo Bidois and families etc. Awaiting your reply.
-
hi Sala,
Talofa from Tuvalu, that's correct, the Alexandra Corrie that I'm talking about is the one in Fiji. My father said that he came to Tuvalu and then married a native lady from Nukufetau and they have two daughters in which the other one is my grandmother.
What my father told me that Alexandra went back to Fiji and married another lady and never came back to Tuvalu. There is one lady that i use to contact to and she said that she is married to the Corrie family too.
Thanks for replying but awaiting your reply too.
regards to you and your family,
viiga
-
Farmertom, thanks for the email, regarding Alec Corrie's sisters. He said that the only thing he knows tha he has one sister named Agnes but he don't know the others, but he also mentioned that Alec's married twice and he also knew that Robert has two wives.
Thanks and hope to communicate more on this matter.
viiga
-
Hi viiga,
my mom knows of Agnes and Alec from their dad's (Robert Corrie's) other wife as my mom's mom (Mita, from second wife) used to refer to them as her sister/brother. I think my mom mentioned that she still communicates with her cousins in the Gilberts (Milne/Corrie family). I think what we really need to do here is work up a tree and get dates (years) organized. Mom was saying she gets confused because of same names being passed down to their children and children's children, i.e., agnes, alex, robert, etc. I'll try write things down next time and provide info to you. Have a good day.
-
wow this is exciting and interesting all at the same time viiga. If you have time to chat we can go the chat room?
-
Talofa Sala, sorry for the late reply but I would also like to chat with you, and as for Agnes, my father said that she stayed in Gilbert.
I also have a son and he is 20 years old now and he is also named after Alec as my father wants to keep on the family name but we used to call him Aleke as in Tuvaluan.
Thanks again and i would like the three of us to go to the chat room to discuss more on this family, if you are ready. We can also start any time.
regards,
viiga
-
Talofa Sala, one more thing that i forgot to tell you, is that last year my elder sister went to Fiji with some of our relatives and she said that she met Anita in Fiji, she said that Anita has some children in Australia, she also met some other people from the Corrie family and she also brought some photos of them. Looking at the photos, those ladies are just the same as my aunties and one photo of a man but i forgot the names.
The photos are wtih my dad at Nukufetau, i hope that the Anita mentioned in previous mails is the same person that my sister met in Fiji. i also have a copy of the Fiji time with the pictures of the Corrie families reunion in Fiji.
hope that this helps a little, and regards to you and your family.
viiga
-
hi viiga, it is all getting more interesting by the minute and yes i too have the same corrie reunion photo the one your talking about. However you will have to let me know the time difference between here in Australia and Tuvalu so we can chat at the right times then. If that is okay with you. Talk soon!

Hi everyone just to answer some of the queries , I know that Robert David Corrie had six siblings who all lived in Australia in the 1980'. Robert sailed to the Pacific and eventually reached Kiribati (Gilbert Islands), had twelve children , six from his first wife and another six from his second wife, his wives names were Taoniti and Lydia. One of his son's with Taoniti named Alexander had two daughters with a Tuvaluan lady. He then left Tuvalu for Fiji and also had several children with a Tongan lady
Robert's other son with Taoniti is named Benjamin David Corrie married Banaban ladies from Ocean Island and has five children as one happened to be my mother and most of us also reside in FIJI
My grandfather Benjamin died in the 1970s at the age of 98
Hope my information answers some of your questions

Hi there,
My great grandmother is the daughter of Robert Corrie and Lydia. I just know of her two sisters Mita and Charlotte. If Benjamin is their brother, could you please tell me if they have other siblings?
Regards,
Elizabeth

Hi Dunscore and any other members of the Corrie family who have been posting for some years.
I hope you are still contact via Rootschat, as I have just now registered because I found reference to your correspondence via Google. Presently in Fiji, I live in Melbourne. Robert David Corrie, born 1838, who, I understand, migrated from Scotland to Gilbert Islands, was the sister of my grandmother's grandmother. She was Martha Elizabeth, she married Walter Howard; my grandmother was a Howard. They lived in NSW. I have only recently been searching for family history information. I discovered some weeks ago that there are members of the Corrie family here in Fiji. I would be interested in finding some of them and perhaps visiting them while I'm here (doing voluntary work). Can anyone supply information about them? I've not yet tried the Fiji white pages (have been back here only one week).

correction to my post of may 10 : Robert David Corrie was born in 1842 or 45, and was the BROTHER of my g2 grandmother. I would like to make contact with living relatives in Suva. A visit to the Suva Cemetery could be interesting also.

Hi Tobias20, and welcome to RootsChat. ;D
Dunscore has not been online since early April. I have just sent them a Personal Message (PM) advising them you have posted twice on their topic and are seeking contact.
I'm sorry you haven't received a reply as yet.

Hi Leanni94, and welcome to RootsChat. ;D
Because we have a policy of not posting names of living or possibly living persons on RootsChat could I ask you to edit your post using the Modify button (located on the top right of your post) and remove the names of those persons who might still be alive.
This is to protect them from the inconveniences of spam and the risk of identity theft, etc.
I hope the original poster or others researching your family reply to you soon. :)
Many thanks,

Hi Silou,
When you reply to a topic RootsChat does send out a notification to advise the person of a new reply.
I have just checked and Dunscore is still being notified of new replies, however there were 2 in 2014 that were not replied to.

My apologies for being off "the air" for so long but I am now back into researching the Corrie family.
Last year we visited Fiji and the Suva Corries held a large get-together for me, with over 100 attending.
Hopefully you are all happy to keep in touch re this family again.
Cheers,
Dunscore

Hey all,
My great grandmother was a Corrie, "Moira Binsiar" (nee Corrie) I always called her "Big Nan" she's from the Torres Strait Islands, she passed away 2 years ago. But my Nan said she was born on Thursday Island then when WW2 came they evacuated the islands and Nan and her siblings were moved to Cairns as they got older some stayed in Cairns, some moved to Mackay & other places. (Nan moved to Mackay and lived there)
I've seen pictures of Nans parents I cant remember their names but Great Great Grandad was a Corrie form Badu Island and Great Great Nan was a Maneway from Thursday Island. Nan always called her "Nan Dolly".
