Looking for baptism of James Avery born Lyng about 1836
-
Hi am new to rootschat, but have the same James Avery in my family tree. He was my G.G.G.Father. Have you managed to get anywhere with finding the baptism? Hope to hear back from you :)

Hi and welcome to Rootschat.
I'm sure you will find it useful over the coming months etc.
Unfortunately I did not find the baptism of James Avery.
Although he is not in my tree I posted this request to help Lyndsey Avery who like me is a member of Genes Reunited.
Initially we both had James' spouse as Ann Cull but I believe her James married Mary Ann Bartlett Qtr 1861 Newport Gwent/Wales.
There is someone else on Genes (Clifford) who has a Mary Avery in his tree whom I believe may be the sister of James.
Worth joining Genes for a tenner a year!?
Regards
Bryan

hehe, this is Lyndsey! ;D thanks for all your help!

Hi Lyndsey, glad to see you joined on my advice but doesn't appear you are going to be lucky on this one.
Did you ever contact Clifford on Genes regarding Mary possible brother to James?
As said before if all else fails James' marriage to Mary Ann will at least give his father and it should be easy to trace the family in the 1841 census when James would be circa 5 years old (perhaps you have already done this?)
Good hunting :)

Good morning!
Yes, I ordered the marriage cert on ancestry but it never arrived so had to request refund and buy elsewhere - am awaiting it's arrival.
The 1841 Census shows other James Averys but none in or from the Lyng area, I've made contact with tree owners but no replies. V.frustrating.
I've never found the Clifford tree either, did search after you told me about it but to no avail, so concluded that it's prob been deleted or I'm being a typical blond looking in the wrong place! ???
Hey ho, I'll wait for the certificate but am desperate to find out more, especially as rumour has it that James was linked to Captain Avery/Every, a ruthless pirate!
Once again, thanks for your efforts :)

Hello again Lyndsey
Clifford is still on Genes Reunited!
If you search for Mary Avery b1834 it will bring up a couple of dozen or so. You can then select the one born Lyng and contact him.
I've done this myself today explaining the possibility of Mary and James being siblings and await his reply. It does not look like he has James in his tree but hopefully he will have the parents of Mary who just maybe the sister of James?
Will let you know the outcome :) (only cos you're an Avery! ;))

Bryan, thanks very much - you're a good 'un! :)

The James Avery & Mary Anna Bartlett , if I am correct in my research are my great grandparrents.
He was a carpenter ( like his father), became a wheelwright. Moved to Newport probably via the steamer that ran between Newport & Weston-super-Mare. Started a carriage works. Its location mentioned in Kellys guide 1901 (I think). He was in newport at its peak as a coal shipping port when carts required to move the coal to the ships. He bought a house for each of his 10 children.
James Avery's life can practically followed through the census records . Unfortunately he died in 1908.
James was born in Yatton, which is a sub district of Congresbury near where Bristol Airport is located.
I am trying to follow James' lineage back to see if there is a line to the famous Avery Clans of Dedham, Ma. and/or Groton, Ct. Avery Clans of USA.
I am stuck at William Avery born about 1860s ish. I do not think he came from Yatton but his wife Sarah did.
The Weston-super-mare FHS have created many detailed transcripts from the Parish records of the area. They keep these on line for members information.
Sorry about rabbiting

Since this thread started Lyng baptisms have been added to FreeREG. There were several children baptised there by John and Hester AVERY/EVERY between 1825 and 1835, including James in 1832.

Abergavenny, are you on Genes? Am glad you replied to this thread, had almost given up hope of finding anyone else who was curious about James! Which of James' children do you descend from?
Hope to hear back! :D

DRH123, Thanks so much for your info! It has been quite a while since I last logged on here, as mentioned above I'd given up hope but it's great news! :D

I had issues with the "Lyng" baptism. Had to synthise district, sub-district details from the census images to work out what was going on.
James Avery & Mary Anna Bartlett had 10 children.
Martha (b.1862), Frderick (b.1863), Earnest (b. 1866), Eva (b.1868), James (1870), Alice (b.1872),
Lily (b.1876), Thomas (b1876), Edgar (b.1877), Florence (b.1879)
The family were all born in Newport.
My grandfather was Thomas John (TJ) who lived at 56 Mendelgief Rd. from about 1911 - 1958.
My father was an executor of the estate. He was cremated at Cardiff crematorium.
TJ was a twin.
TJ married Clare Jane Attewell.
What is of interest is that she was something like 3rd cousin to my uncle Graham Attewell who my mothers sister married.
The Attewell family are farmers , farming near Magor and my cousin farming on the Nash levels.
TJ & Clare Jane had 9 children.
he last of these children died in Australia in 2013 aged 102. She and er husband retired there o be with there son. Her husband had been a chief fire officer in Newport.
I was born at St. Woolos hospital . My brother born at Lydia Beynon
