-
Welcome to Rootschat, Sarah. I've removed your post from the church links thread (for sources rather than queries) and moved it on it's own thread so others will see it.
You haven't given us any idea of dates but it can be difficult to find 'recent' information online.
You can post details of living people here but can you give us an idea of when your grandfather was born so we can suggest where to look for information.
-
granda was in dromore about 1890 i dont have any idea what his parents names were.he went to work in the copper mines in montana in 1923 but he stowed away on the boat.think he origionally came from aughadulla but moved to cornarrow hen he married and had a family.thats where im from.
-
hi sarah, do the dates on this marriage sound right?
john gallagher married brigid mcmenamin 26-may-1914
dromore roman catholic church
dromore parish
omagh

-
hello tony .yes those dates sound right.does it give any more information? any thing on granda,s parents.thats great.soooo happy.
-
sorry, nothing for parents but if you think its the right one then you could apply for the marriage certificate and it would give you the father's names.
tony
-
how do i do that.just go the council offices in omagh?
-
if you go to this site;
http://www.groni.gov.uk/
it will tell you how to go about getting certificates, what it costs etc.
tony
-
thanks a mill tony .you,ve been a great help.
-
no problem :)
-
hello tony ,sarah mck here looking your worldly wisdom again.i got my grandads marriage cert from the general register in belfast like you suggested.Unfortunately it doesnt give me their dates of birth but it gives me their fathers names which is great.my great grandad on my fathers side i believe was from donegal.he was married to a dromore girl called sarah mcquaid in 1868 or 1871.how would i go about finding out where they are buried.have you any idea how i would find out how many children they had.im only aware of 3. james, john(granda) and michael.james never married and i would also like to know who michael married.Thats alot to take in i know but im stuck again.Any help would be great or point me in the right direction. thanks a million.
-
hi sarah,
what was your great grandfathers name on the marriage cert? i dont think you mentioned it in your post or i need new glasses :) did the marriage cert tell you anything else apart from the fathers names?
-
my grandfathers name was patrick gallagher and he lived in corraheskin townland outside dromore.not sure if he was originally from there or some one thought he was originally from donegal????He was deceased at the time of my grandads marriage.have found my grand parents grave and my grandfathers grandparents on his mothers side grave but dont know where great granda patrick was buried.
-
hello,
there is a marriage for a patrick gallagher to sarah mcquade 22-feb-1868.
also births to patrick gallagher and sarah mcquaid (different spellings);
francis 13-sept-1873
margaret 18-feb-1876
catherine 12-apr-1878
bridgid 12-apr-1878
ellen 14-oct-1880
but whats putting me off is i cant see james, john or michael!
-
i also found a john gallagher born 1890 with parents patrick and sarah gallagher.whats the chances of 2 patrick and sarah gallagher nee mc quaid from corraheskin.weird.as far as i know sarah mcquaid parents were called bernard and mary if that helps.would love to find out more about patrick but am not sure how to,You most think im a pain in the neck. :)
-
no,you're not a pain in the neck :D
it depends how common a surname mcquaid was in tyrone at that time.
i dont want to complicate things further but there is a marriage for michael gallagher to mary mcquaide 29-nov-1900 dromore r.c.
-
i have already checked that out and its not my grandas brother.that michael gallagher was from aghadarragh dromore and his father i s named as christoper on the marriage cert.the michael gallagher im looking for is from corraheskin and had 2 sons called michael and thomas.their the only 2 child that i know of.he may have possibly been married to susan barrett in 1920 but cant be sure
-
i had a look at griffiths valuation of ireland, a lot of mcquaids and gallaghers.
it looks like you've spent money on certs that where wrong so i dont want to add to your expenses by sending you off on a wild goose chase! if you live in the area you could try parish records. it would involve trawling round all the chapels in the area but would prove fruitful. in case you haven't noticed, this is me being stuck ;D i think we need some help :)
tony
-
ok.where are the parish records kept?think i should just phone the priest in dromore? You,ve been a superstar.just bought 1 wrong marriage cert so it not too bad.haven,t found anything scandelous yet so bit disappointed haha.will let you know how i get on.thank u thank u thank u ;)
-
the priest in dromore is the right man to talk to.
dont worry, there's time yet to find something scandalous ;)
take care,
tony
-
hello there im back to torture you today again.i was talkng to an old friend of my grandfathers last nite and he told me that my grandfathers brother was a bit of a rogue and spent a lot of his youth in jail for being in the republican movement.his name was michael gallagher from corraheskin and he spent time in dery jail crumlin road jail peterhead jail in scotland and the prison ship argenta.he was arrested in james street or john street in omagh with rifles and guns.not sure of the dates but somewhere in between 1915-1935 i think.have you any idea how i would get any information on this.
-
of the top of my head, the local paper in omagh should have some information, the local library might have editions going back that far.will have a think about it.
-
there are loads of hits if you google "prison ship argenta". it seems it was in use in 1922 for interment. proni seem to hold some records on this but i dont think they have a list of detainees. what where you saying yesterday about not finding anything interesting in your family history yet :)
-
have contacted proni but havent got a reply yet.i think i will have to go to belfast to look up the records myself.dont think they post anything out.also found out last nite that my grandad had a sister and a brother(he died in his youth).not sure of their names yet.still havent found out where great grandad patrick was from but hopefully i,ll get that soon.rang omagh library they keep old heralds on microfilm so have to go there to look up stuff but it,ll probably take time to go through it all as i dont have an exact date.glad there was some scandel after all.would be so dissapointed if my family were boring. i thought i was the only black sheep ;D
-
the black sheep are the interesting ones!
there's a book on amazon about the argenta;
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Republican-Internment-Prison-Ship-Argenta/dp/0716526832
its £40 new :( but you can get it for £18 nearly new. you could put it on your christmas list and maybe santa will bring it,would be an interesting read!
-
dont think im that interesting unfortunately :Pmight get that book alright.love reading.need to be good for a while if i want santa to bring it :D
-
well, you've only a couple of weeks left to behave yourself!
-
will just have to face it.i,ll have to buy the book myself .haven,t a hope of getting it of santa. ;)Only after ordering it.
-
i got my book this morn.haven,t started it yet but went to the appendix and my great uncle michael is named.he was arreated at a parade in dromore on 6 jan 1922.still am stuck about info on great granda patrick no date of birth but hope to uncover something soon.
-
i call that a major find ;D congratulations! didn't take the book long in getting there :)
-
yeah didnt expect it to be here so quick.rang proni TODAY SO HAVE TO WRITE TO A FELLA THERE TO REQUEST COURT PAPERS AND PRISON RECORDS AND WHATEVER ELSE THEY HAVE ON MICHAEL SO THEN THEY COPY THEM AT A FEE AND POST THEM TO ME.HOPING THEY MIGHT HAVE SOMETHING ON GREAT GRANDAD PATRICK.THINK HE MUST HAVE VANISHED INTO THIN AIR.
-
did proni say they have those records or they would do a search? that would be great if you got them!
great grandad patrick will be found when he wants to be found, he's just making you hang around a bit ;) things turn up when you're least expecting them!
-
the lady i was talking to today said that some of his file might be closed and that she wasn,t sure what information they could let me have until they have a good look at it.cant wait for that info to get to me.just wish i had more on my granda and great granda.
-
you never know what might be in the file or who gets mentioned. it might lead you on to something else.
this family history carry-on does get exciting sometimes :)
-
well you,ve been a great help to me so thank you.
-

Index to civil registration is online and you should be able to find the marriage details by searching for bride and then groom separately then cross-referencing the results. Since registration of births started in 1864 there will be no birth certificate for Tomas which means hunting for any existing church records.

it is indeed shane :) well done ,this is the 1st time i,ve been on rootschat in almost 3 years , was good to hear about the Dromore shoots of the 3 catholics , its a little bit blurred from stories that i have heard although i have heard that Mick blew up the old Dromore barraxks , now the Credit union is its place , and in retaliation the 3 men were shot the next day , they were shot in the feet and told to reounce the virgin mary...i havethe confidential paper work for PRONI , good reading
