Title: Help please Jesse & Rebecca HILL (nee COOKE)
Post by: JohnSueP on Thursday 20 November 08 12:28 GMT (UK)
Could I please have a bit of help in trying to trace the father of Jesse Hill.  He was born in 1782 (+- 3 years) and died 24/8/1870.  He married Rebecca Cooke (don't know when) and they had 9 children ( have all those).  Jesse was recorded in the 1841 census as living in Wickham Market and was shown as Blacksmith and Parish Clerk.  I'm not sure if he was born there.
I think I have found 2 of his brothers, Thomas Hill who married Sarah (nee Smith), but don't know dob, also David Hill who married Biddy again don't know any other details.
I am quite sure that Jesse Hill's parents had more then 3 boys as the Hill family (like many others at the time) seem to reach nearly double figures, so there must be more around, but I need to find Jesse's parents name.
I live in Portugal and I plan to visit the records office, but it wont be till next year, so any help right now would be appreciated.
Many thanks
John

Thank you for that information.  I have to presume that Jesse's father came from Easton.  The date of David and Biddy's marrage ties in with the birth of their first daughter (Joanna Hill on 21/6/1827)

In Family History, you can't presume anything as this can lead you down the wrong path.  :'( :'(

Easton would be a good place to start for finding a baptism for Jesse.  :D

Thank you for the information from the papers of 1857 and 1870.

I know that Jesse Hill was a blacksmith and a Parish Clerk, but I'm not sure what a 'whitesmith' is.  I also know that David Hill was a cabinet maker from the 1841 census.  Can you please tell me what 'White's 1844' is? Is it a register of some sort?  If so can I download it from anywhere?

William White published gazeteers and directories for many counties.

Suffolk is by Hundred, then by towns and villages within the hundred.  It lists only gentry and then trades and professions.

Our blacksmiths were trading in Framlingham at the same time - they were often parish clerks and overseers/guardians of the parish, Respected people in the community.

Whitesmith - could also fashion silver as well as make all the usual horseshoes and iron work.  We have some family ledgers from the early 1800s showing the day to day trading of a blacksmith.

I have an original White's leather bound, hand stitched 1855 edition for Suffolk bought for my birthday in 1972, it has recently been re-stitched and that cost a great deal more than the original GBP5.00

I also have an 1844 reprint (pub by David and Charles in 1970).

They can be found on CD-Rom now and there is an original from 1844 on a well known Auction web site for about GBP 149.00 - which seems about right price for them today.

I have just got the Easton parish registers and this is what I have found so far (still working through them)

Jesse Hills sn of John and Sarah Hills bap 7 Nov 1784
Maria Hills of John and Sarah Hills dr bap 7 Jan 1787
James Hill sn John and Sarah Hill, late Beecroft bap  26 Feb 1790
Sarah Hill dr John and Sarah Hill, late Beecroft bap 7 Mar 1793
Jarrold Hill, sn John and Sarah Hill, late Beecroft bap 27 Sep 1794
John Hill sn John and Sarah Hill, late Beecroft bap 19 Aug 1798 buried 19 Dec 1798
David Hill sn John and Sarah Hill, late Beecroft bap 29 May 1802
Poussin Hill sn John and Sarah Hill, late Beecroft bap 5 May 1805 (found him later as Posseen!)

I also have a marriage at Easton:
John Hill single man and Sarah Beecroft single woman both of this parish, married by banns, 2 Sep 1784.

There are other Hill items which I have not fitted in yet.
John and Sarah were buried at Wickham Market. There is a gravestone which reads:
John Hill 18 Nov 1834 age 77
Sarah his wife 25 Mar 1838 age 76
John Hill their grandson 18 Jun 1838 age 7
Geor Hill Stanton 11 Mar 184... age 7 wks

Haven't tracked down John Hill the grandson yet (too many John Hills) but George Hill Stanton is a great grandchild.

I'll let you know if I find any more in the Easton registers.

Hello Kevin_P

Very many thanks for all that information, I have been very busy with the Hill tree and it has expanded quite dramatically.

Regarding the grandson John Hill.

He could have been the son of Jarrod Hill who married Ursula Elory they had a John Hill around 1830
or
He could be the son of Posseen Hill who married Ann Rowland.  John Hill their son was born in 1830

My main interest now is finding the father of George Hill born 1842 or 1843, his mother was Elizabeth Hill (nee Finch) who was married to Charles Hill,. but I have a death certificate for Charles Hill who died in Dallinghoo on 12 Apr 1838!!!  Elizabeth Hill is named as George's mother when he was baptised in 1850 - but no father!!

I will have to visit the RO in Ipswich again to make some more searches to see if George is a bastard but kept the Hill name.

Anyway, many thanks and I look forward to any more info you might find out

John

Hi JohnSueP and Kevin_P,

It seems you have researched the Hill family side a lot. I'm looking for the parents of John and Sarah (Beecroft) Hill. That's as far as I've got with the family history. They were my great, great, great, great grandparents. Their son was Pussien Hill who married Ann Rowland. They had a son called John Hill. My great great grandfather was their son Jarrod Hill (1847-1929).

I've just been given old photos and a bit of research on the Hill family tree. If you have any info on this part of the Hill family that would be great.

Thanks a lot.

Thomas Hill

Hi John,

Thanks for responding. It would be great if you could share what you have discovered. It's great there are so many 'John's' in the Hill family. One of my middle names is John! Do you have any info you could share online? My father researched all this pre internet age so he was limited how far he could go. Can you tell me who Jessie Hill the Blacksmith is in relation to John Hill and Sarah Beecroft? My email is: tomdjhill@hotmail.com

Thanks a lot.

Thomas
