Hi people, i'm new to this, be nice..... I have spent all afternoon trying to find death notices for my grandfather who was cremated in Tunbridge Wells on 8th June 1973. I have looked at KM Newspaper site and deceasedonline, both helpful. His name was Walter Victor Steenkiste and he lived in Tunbridge Wells. This is a long shot - trying to find my birth father.......oh for a never ending internet usage account!

Hi Wendy
Welcome to Rootschat
I am not aware of any local newspapers for that area being online for that date. However, I believe Tunbridge Wells library to hold copies of their old local newspapers - they will probably look it up for you as you have an exact date http://kent.gov.uk/LibrariespublicUI/OpeningTimes/LibraryDetails.aspx?id=99

Hi Wendy
Not sure if this will be of any use to you, but both of my grandparents were cremated in Maidstone. I contacted the crematorium by e-mail to find out if I could find out if they were entered in the book of remembrance.
Within 24 hours they had located both of my grandparents (I had provided them with the date of death) and sent me a copy of the entry.
I know its not the notice of death but if Tunbridge wells are as helpful you may find this useful.

Hello Wendy,
Nice to have you aboard. We always try to be nice. :)
Incase you dont have this to obtain his Death Cert from GRO for only £7.00 with exact Ref.
Walter Victor Steenkiste. Date of Birth. 6 Sept 1899 . AMJ qtr. HASTINGS. 5N 1118.
Strange Registered in Hastings when lived and wasCremated Tunbridge Wells. Perhaps he died in Hospital at Hastings.
Good Luck with your Quest,
Rog ;D

Thanks Rog
I find it strange that different sites have different registration numbers etc for death records....the Hastings ref is new to me, all very confusing to a newbie. What exactly does a death record show, apart from the obvious; would it show offspring or spouse?
-
Grandarog, just out of interest how are you getting info about Hastings that isn't showing up on my record at deceasedonline? thanks Wendy
-
Hi Wendy
The ref. Rog has given is the ref. for his death certificate - his death was registered in Hastings which would infer that he probably died in Hastings. Assuming you have the full record from https://www.deceasedonline.com/servlet/GSDOSearch (burials and cremations) what does it say at the top of the column where the address is ie. is it definitely his home address? It could be, as suggested above, that perhaps he just died in Hastings. Here's some idea what you will get from a death certificate http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/deaths.htm - it won't show offspring or spouse but it will give the name of the person who registered the death who may or may not be a relative.
