Title: Carelis ??
Post by: rozzi on Wednesday 19 November 08 22:19 GMT (UK)
Does anyone know a place named Carelis. I discovered on a census of past relatives  that settled in London and on most census has their birthplaces down as Cardiff has Carelis down in 1851. I cannot find it on a map.

Hi

The enumerator often wrote down how it sounded - mainly due to the varying accents and low literacy levels in those days

You are referring to the Saunders family so I had a look at the image and Mary Saunders was b Ireland

My initial reaction to Carelis was Caerwys which is in Mold but somebody with more Welsh knowledge may have a different thought

Hi
You may be right. We thought Mary was born in Cork. Not sure who her Husband was Celia is actually Cecilia who married Edward Reed of Hackney. I only know Carelis to be a surname not a place name and I cannot find Cecelias birth so i,m stuck. Thanks

Hi

Just to confuse matters

Births September qtr 1841

Saunders Cecilia Upton on Severn 18 454

Upton on Severn is in the county of Worcestershire so perhaps it was Worcs and not Wales

I found that too but census says Cardiff and the family thought so too. We are a crazy clan. Maybe I need to pursue brother William who until yesterday I did,nt know existed. Thanks
