Is it possible for someone to check the 1861 census for a Samuel Chapman, born 1819 Kelshall Hertfordshire. I have found an entry for man of the same name in the St. Faiths district of Middlesex.
Hope someone can help.
-
Do you have any other details about him as Chapman is such a common surname , his occupation perhaps etc ???
-
Sorry no. But Kelshall is a tiny village (even now) in Hertfordshire so if the census shows his birth place i would be fairly sure of it being my ancestor
-
I can find no sign of him in 1861 or using the historical search on Ancestry.
Have you found him on any other census's if so can you please post the reference so that I can look.

He's on the 1851 with wife and daughter.
I can't find any of them in 1861 but some parts of the 1861 census in London are missing

I've think I found him in 1851 with a wife Charlotte & daughter Charlotte.
What are the census reference numbers for the man you have found in 1861, ie piece, folio and page

It was on Genes Reunited so it was a longshot that someone on here would be able to find it ??? ???
He is really causing us a puzzle.
-
His daughter died after the 1851 census, his wife in 1852 and his son James is living in Kelshall Hertfordshire with grandparents on the 1861 but Samuel just seems to have disappeared. Cannot even find a death for him, well not without ordering loads of certificates!!!!

Its only something i found on Genes Reunited. It doesn't show folio numbers or anything and i don't have access to ancestry where it directs me to.
-
Can't see a near miss on the 1861 at all so he may be on missing pages.
Is there any chance that you could approach your contact and ask for reference details??
Have you found him on the 1871?
There is a Samuel Chapman born 1820 Hertfordshire, Gardener, on the 1871 visiting a George Chapman (age 30) and wife Sarah and family in Islington. He appears to have a 29 year old wife called Rebecca ??? ??? but if George is his son(which it doesn't say) then it probably isn't him)

Thats not him. We'd already investigated that one to the extent of ordering a possible marriage cert from them but turned out to be a dead end.

The Samuel Chapman on GR, was born in 1824 Horsham St Faiths Norfolk, was living at Horsham St Faiths Norfolk and married to Martha.

Hi Trish
Well this is a puzzle but how does this seem?
Samuel Chapman married Charlotte Gibbons June 1/4 1849 Holborn
Daughter Charlotte Ann was born June 1/4 1850 Clerkenwell
All 3 are on the 1851 census
Daughter Charlotte Ann died Sept 1/4 1851 Clerkenwell
Son James was born Sept 1/4 1851 Clerkenwell
Wife Charlotte died March 1/4 1852 Clerkenwell
Samuel (possibly) died at Kelshall March 1/4 1852 death registered at Royston 3a 128 (which is the reg district for Kelshall) after taking his son back to Hertfordshire to be brought up by family after the death of his wife.
No deaths for Samuel Chapman in Clerkenwell 1851-1861
(Possibly orphaned) James Gibbons Chapman grandson is on 1861 census with his grandparents.
It may be worth you posting on the Hertfordshire board to see if anyone has access to the Kelshall burial registers to see if Samuel is buried there.
If you got wife Charlotte's death cert you would find out possibly if her cause of death was infectious.
Then, if you're feeling flush, order the Samuel Chapman death cert Royston Mar 1852 just to rule him in or out if no-one turns up a burial in the registers.
Other than than, Samuel is still alive in 1861, his name and place of birth is completely mistranscribed or he's in one of the Islington missing pages. He doesn't turn up in 1871 either.
