Oh right, obvious really   :P

Would you believe there are 2 Hilda Haffendens born 1900, both in Sussex, one Heathfield, so this is 'yours' ...

1901 - RG13/879; Folio: 59; Page: 18 - Eastbourne
Brightland Road, then a sub-address I cant read !

Frank Haffenden 23  Head Bricklayer Sussex, Rotherfield
Fanny Haffenden 21  Wife born Sussex, Mayfield

Hilda R Haffenden 8 months  born Eastbourne

I guess you have Allen H Bailey on the 1901, as you knew his grandparents names - he's with them and one of their dau's - a 20 year old Mary.

1901 - RG13/897; Folio: 62; Page: 27. - Rotherfield, Queens Road.

Allen is noted as born Rotherfield

I'll see what other kids they had in earlier years, and we may be able to piece together his parents - or at least mother .... but I'd recommend you get his Birth Cert for which Wozzle kindly looked up the Index entry ...

1891 - RG12/782; Folio 71; Page 20 - Rotherfield
Queens Road

George Bailey 53  Head General Lab Rotherfield
Francis Bailey 48  Wife Sussex, Heathfield
William B Bailey 25  son General Lab Rotherfield
Margaret Bailey 20  dau Dressmaker do
George Bailey 14  son do
James Bailey 10  son do
Mary Bailey 10  dau do
Alice A Bailey 6  dau do

So, the most obvious candidate for Allens dad is William - George is a possibilty - but dont discount that Allen may be the son of Margaret ...

Earlier snapshot of family ...

1871 - RG10/1050; Folio: 75; Page: 15 - Rotherfield
'Croboro'

George Bailey 33  Head Ag Lab
Frances Bailey 28  Wife
Benjamin Bailey 5  son
Lois C Bailey 3  dau
Margaret Bailey 7mons  dau

So, is Benjamin the William seen in 1891 ?

Marriages Mar 1897

BAILEY  Benjamin William    E.Grinstead  vol 2b page 189    to  Killick  Bertha Annie

So they married well after Allen was born, the finger is beginning to point elsewhere ....

You really are going to have to get Allen's Birth Cert - no real clues here ...

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for that. It was pure coincidence that I found this thread. I was actually searching for any more info on my grandfather's WW1 experiences using a well-known search engine  ;)
Serendipity strikes again!

Sussexman

Hi Sussexman,

I love search engines, an understated tool for genealogy ;)

We have a board for Military Research here for WW1 just follow this link and ask away.....just let us know names ages dates of births etc as much as you know and see what can be found.

I was able to locate my Great Grandfather battalion details recently from a fellow RootsChatter, this lead me to discover part of a War Diary where my GGrandfather was loading gas cells on early trucks which for WW1 it unusual as it was powered by horse power!!  In WW1 the major export to the front was hay for the horses  ;)

Regards

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for pointing me to the WW1 board. I know what you mean about horses and hay as my grandfather's battalion were mounted infantry. I have his spurs!

Regards,
Roger
