My late garandmother Mary Cameron Mcghee was reportedly one of the first tram conductresses in Glasgow during WWI. She eventually married her first cousin Donald Campbell, a 5ft tall blacksmith from Oban but only after coming to sydney australia in 1919.
He came to australia 1912 but had to wait for the war to end before she could emigrate in. Her father (first name unknown to me) reportedly owned several houses in Glasgow on a corner block called "the Sorn" where the families lived.
Does anyone know the address of these houses or have any information on the McGee / Magee ?? family
Alternatively Donald Campbell grew up in high st Oban (no. 25?) and his blacksmith shop in Oban is reported to be preserved as a heritage sight. It would be great to learn any info about Mary Magee the Clippy or Donald Campbell the Blacksmith. ???
-
I've not heard of a block of houses called "The Sorn".
However, there is a Sorn St in the East End of Glasgow.
You may do well to post this request in the Lanarkshire board as well.

Do you know when Mary was born?
As far as I can see, there were only 2 Mary Cameron McGhee (any spelling) in the whole of Scotland.
1.1887 in Old Cumnock, Ayrshire
2.1890 in St Rollox, Glasgow
If we can decide which of these it is, if either, then the registry entry will give her address and both parents names, occupations and possibly the date of their marriage.
Dave
PS. It would also help if you gave date, or even approximate date, of birth of Donald.
-
Found out today since original posting. Donald was born 1/9/1881 at 21 high st Oban not 25. Father Donald, mother Flora nee MacFarlane, brothers Duncan and Angus.
Mary was younger than Donald and had an adopted brother John or Jock
-
Mary McGhee and Donald were cousins. Her mother's maiden name was Campbell
-
Mary also had a younger sister Hanna who came with her to Australia
-
OK, not knowing Mary's age I took a chance and purchased the registry entry for the birth in Glasgow and it looks like we may have got lucky.
Mary Cameron McGhee born 15 Dec 1889 at 181 Stirling Road, Glasgow*
Birth registered by father on 3 Jan 1890.
Father George McGhee, railway companys parcel deliverer
Mother Catherine m.s. Campbell
They married 24 June 1887
Someone can maybe look up 1901 census for you which will give names of siblings in 1901 and address where living then (and father's occupation).
I'm getting this info from ScotlandsPeople
( http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk )
This is a pay per view site. You'll need to register but costs are very reasonable. I've only spent a couple of pounds to find out this much. Minimum purchase is £6GBP for 30 credits. A copy document costs 5 credits.
It should be easy for you to locate the marriage of George and Catherine given that you now have their names and date of marriage. That in turn will give you their agesand both sets of Mary's grandparents.
This all looks very hopeful but you need to try and find Hanna's birth to confirm we have correct family.
I'll have a quick look for some info on Donald.
Dave
*PS, my grandmother worked in a bakery in Stirling Road. I can send you a photo if you want.
I'll send you a PM with my email address. That way I can send you the birth record I found. No point in you using credits for it as well.

Hi Dave and Pete,
Well done, Dave a good find.
I have found the family in 213 Stirling Road, St Rollox, Glasgow in 1901 census,
George McGhee 42 b 1859 Sorn, Ayrshire - Railway Pared Diliverer (sic)
Catherine McGhee 42 b 1859 Sorn, Ayrshire - wife
Hannah T McGhee 12 b 1889 Glasgow - scholar
Mary McGhee 11 b 1890 Glasgow - scholar
James McGhee 8 b 1893 Glasgow - scholar
Tom
-
Well, that confirms we have the correct family.
Couldn't find Hannahs birth but that is because we thought she was younger so I looked from 1890 onwards.
Haven't tried earlier. I'll leave that to you Pete.
Can't find Donald in 1881 either. Not in Oban anyway. There are 5 possible births elsewhere in Argyll, a couple more likely than others.
I'm getting a bit tired now. It's nearly 6am and I haven't had a kip yet so I'll sign off before I start making mistakes.
I'll come back to the thread.

Just had to log back in to make one final parting comment. I just noticed birth place of Mary's parents. Sorn! If father did own a block of houses, that's obviously where he took the name from.
Seems unlikely that a parcel deliverer would be able to purchase a block of houses though. Family rumour or family inheritance? ;D
Too early for The Great Train Robbery!
Incidentally Pete. St Rollox was the name of a huge Railway works near Stirling Road, about half a mile south. Stirling Rd still exists but is all now part of Strathclyde uni. At the top of Stirling Road is Glasgow Cathedral.

I can't help with your family but I do have a photograph of High St Oban. My great grandmother and most of her siblings were born at 23 High St. They lived there from about 1860 - 1895. So they would have known your family very well. In the picture No 21 is just beside the red car on the right of the street, just before the scaffolding. I have a better picture but it's too big to post here.

Photographs help so much in making stories come alive :)

Added: 'Current' google ref for the address ::):
Oban Addiction Support & Information Service, 21 High Street, OBAN PA34 4GB

This is Dalziels the bakers in Stirling Rd (c1906). I think the number is 82. It would have been just down the road on the other side of the street from your rellies.
(My gran is far left).
Her husband to be owned a butchers shop closer, and on the same side of the street but alas, no photos of it.

Sorn is in East Ayrshire, and about 3miles away from Old Cumnock.

Have you seen the "Long Lost Relative" post on here:

Definitely related!!
PS I can recommend the SORN INN - we had B&B there a few years back and it was lovely!

Re Glasgow Trams WW1 - http://glasgowtransport.co.uk/trams.html has some interesting reading and a couple of photographs of WW1 conductresses

Could this be the death of a brother of George McGhee?
William McGhee, 36, August 15, 1869 at Sorn, Ironstone Miner,
Married to Elizabeth Donelly,
Henry McGhee, Labourer (dec) and Bridget Hamill (dec)
Patrick Donelly, Brother-in-law (X)
-
Possibly Kate, but maybe a bit young...
George was bc1859, William bc1833
Once Pete finds the marriage of George and Catherine, it will be easier to tell.
I'm assuming Henry McGhee and Bridget Hamill are Williams parents and Patrick the person that registered the death?
Perhaps Henry and Bridget are Georges parents? :-\
-
:'( Maths never was my subject!!
Henry and Bridget being parents to William (and maybe George!)
And bro-in-law Patrick made his mark when he registered the death.
But what I've looked at so far, McGhee seems to be a very popular name in Ayrshire.

to Dave & Pete and everyone else interested in 213 Stirling road Glasgow,
I am new at this site so hope this presents okay. I have a letter from my 3x great grandmother written in 1860 to her daughter in Australia. The address written on the letter is 213 Stirling Road Glasgow. It was from Margaret and Norman McLeod ( very common Scot name - Norman McLeod I mean) to their daughter Elizabeth McLeod. I actually have several copies of letters to Elizabeth from her mother and sister. Dorliz
-
Dorliz, what a co-incidence!
So young George McGhee had just been born when that letter was written from the proprty he'd be living in 40 years later.
Small world

Hi,
I do not know if people still look at this discussion. I have Just found it. I am descended from James McGhee (born 8 Aug 1830 at Sorn) and his second wife Janet Maxwell.
James had 9 children with his first wife Mary Cameron (they were married on 3 Jan 1852)
Their Children were James, Mcghee (Sep 1853), Mary Falconer McGhee (8 Jan 1855), George Cameron McGhee (5 Jul 1858), James McGhee (12 Oct 1860), John McGhee (12 Apr 1864), Dvid McGhee (29 May 1865), Janet McGhee (29 May 1865), Agnes McGhee (05 Oct 1868), Margaret Cameron McGHee (1 Mar 1871).
Mary Cameron died on 24 May 1880.
James had a son Robert Maxwell 16 May 1874) to his housekeeper Janet Maxwell whom he later married on 18 Nov 1881.
The had 6 other children:
David McGhee (2 Aug 1882), Annie McGhee (5 Mar 1884), Jeanie McGhee (6 Apr 1887), William McGhee (4 Feb 1889), Charles McMillan McGhee (9 Jul 1890), Andrew Black McGhee (14 May 1891)
James McGhee died on 11 Sep 1897 in Glasgow.
Jeanie McGhee was my grandmother.

Hello Moonbeam & David, I am the granddaughter of the other Mary Cameron McGhee married to Donald Campbell in Australia. I have an Ancestry Tree called Campbell McGhee Jones. If either of you would like to have access let me know and I will list you as contributors. I was the original Penem of 2009, I can't believe that this Rootschat is still functioning. Love to hear from you I may start a new Tree just with the McGhees and Cameron's. Regards Helen ( ceridwen111 )

St Rollox burgh was originally larger than today and covered townhead which includes stirling rd part of the high st and castle st garngad (royston) as well as the huge train depot which is now unfortunately tesco's costco and aldi shopping complex.

"The Sorn Glasgow" is a misleading name for this topic. It was thought that the family owned property in Glasgow called the Sorn. In actual fact the property was in Sorn in Ayrshire at Gilmilnscroft owned by George McGhee in 1890 passed down from his mother Mary Cameron married to James McGhee. The ownership of this property was still in dispute in 1924. It was a farm of some type called Whale farm? Ceridwen
