Hello,
I'm trying to find the family of Robert Montserrat Stephenson who was born in 1880 in Dunedin, New Zealand. I have his parents as John Stephenson and Harriet Ophilia Montserrat but don't have any information about them. Robert moved to Queensland, Australia and was married to Vida May Amos in 1910.
I've never had to research any family in New Zealand before and I'm not having much luck finding online sources. Can anyone suggest sources for tracing John and Harriet's family?
Many thanks,
Carla

Hi Althea,
Thanks for the link :)
No, they're not my trees online. They have some great information on the Stephenson family but sadly, nothing going back after John Stephenson.

Dear Carla
Have you found the information you were seeking on Stephensons in Dunedin? My great grandfather George Stephenson's brother John married a Harriette Opelia Monsarrat in Dublin and I have more information on the family in Ireland and in New Zealand.

Hi,
My relative is Catherine Elizabeth Stephenson Born 1868 who I think might be the sister of George & John. She was the daughter of George & Ellen Stephenson of Green Island fame.
I am also looking for more info on the Stephensons of Dunedin & Otago.
Cheers

Dear Aaron
Your Catherine Elizabeth was my grandfather, Robert Jearrad's sister.
Robert & Catherine's father was George who came to NZ in 1861. George had a brother John (Jack), who married Harriet Monsarrat in Ireland and they came to New Zealand. Later Harriet and some of her children went to Queensland.
We have quite a bit of information on the Stephensons but I'm not sure what happened to Harriet's husband John.
Do you want to know more? Are you in New Zealand?
Cheers

Dear Rosemary,
I was born in NZ but am currently working in Scotland. Once a year I travel to NZ to visit the family as my Grandparents are getting on a bit.
It would be grand to swap stories with you and see if we can discover more about our relations.
I have Harriet in my tree but did not know that George's brother John came out to NZ with her. I have a both Birth and Death date for John from family documents but nothing has come up on the NZ BMD website to match so maybe he went to Australia as well?
I have been to the archives in Ireland last year and am planning a trip shortly to find more info. If you would like I could look some things up for you while I am there? You can check out a question I am running on the Ireland section of Rootschat as well, called "Stephensons of Down"
Am I right to assume you are in NZ?
Cheers

Dear Aaron
I take it your Catherine Elizabeth married Franices Howe.
I have quite a bit of info on the Stephensons - my late cousin Marie put a book together about the Stephensons & their forbears.
As it happens, I am booked to visit the UK and Scotland in July. My partner is Scottish and we will be visiting his sister in the borders and staying with friends in Edinburgh. Here's hoping the Icelandic volcano will not cause us problems.
Where in Scotland do you work? ie what city?
If you are free to meet while we are over there I could take the book "The Stephenson Family" and my memory stick.
Also you might like to key in on the internet "Robert Jearrad Stephenson". This will bring up Malcolm Ward's website and quite a bit of Robert's journal.
Cheers
Rosemary
