I am looking for George Adams, born Beaulieu c.1815.
I believe he was in the 1851 census in High St, Gosport, and could be still there in 1861.
Searching his family names leads me to believe they moved to South Stoneham around 1861.
His wifes name was Elizabeth and possible children will include Helen, George and Henry.
Any help appreciated.

Hi Cathy
They always manage to chuck in a curve-ball somewhere, don't they (our ancestors) ;D
I did notice that on the 1851, George ADAMS age was 41 (b abt 1811, not 1815) and a baker/Grocer 7 employer, and in 1841 he is age 31 (could be rounded though) with occupation Clerk, - could not see any to fit him b 1811 or 1815 on the later census - but since it seems to be the right family, owing to son George W....
1871: 6 Fir Grove Terrace, Millbrook, Southampton, Hampshire
RG10 / Piece: 1200 / Folio: 85 / Pg 4
Head: William SEARLE 67, Grocer, b St Georges Han'er Sq., London
Wife: Elizabeth SEARLE 60, b Nursling, Hants
Dau: Sarah SEARLE 28, b Richmond Surrey
(Reg District covering Millbrook is : South Stomeham)
1881: Firgrove Road, Millbrook, Southampton, Hampshire
RG11 / Piece: 1223 / Folio: 16 / Pg 26
Head: Will'm SEARLE 77, Tea Dealer, b London
Wife: Elizabeth SEARLE 70, b Nursling, Hants
(I think the ecclesatic parish for the above is Fremantle, Millbrook)
Will have a look for George W in 1861 ;D
I did see these:
DEATH: of a George Henry ADAMS, Alverstoke , Sep Qtr 1856
(Can't see any George ADAMS death in South Stoneham or Southampton districts 1851-1861)
MARRIAGE: Southampton , Sep Qtr 1860
Elizabeth ADAMS and William SEARLE on same page
Cheers ;D

:D Ambly
that's really cool, thanks heaps
this Elizabeth is my gx3 grandmother
her son George Walter Adams married a Mary Wilson (from Ireland :-) ) in New Zealand, and I had always presumed that they would be impossible to trace.
(too spoilt with the other research name I guess)
cheers

Hi Cathy
Not spotting a definitive George or George W in 1861, b Gosport.....I don't suppose there was any indication from his 1897 death/burial records in NZ, of how long he had been in NZ? I imagine he may have married Mary in 1868 - what was his occupation at the time - if he had the same occ, in England it may help.
If was still in England 1861 he may have been a servant of some sort or lodging etc and in that case his details could be provided by his employer or landlord and could well be out re: age, the middle initial missing, his place of birth generalised - just to make things more 'interesting' ;D
But to be sure, the following is the closest match I can find:
1861: 3 Crop - St Marys, Southampton
RG9 / Piece: 676 / Folio: 118; pg 11
Lodger: George ADAMS 17, unm, b Southampton, Hampshire
with a large family named McARTHUR who originate in Scotland No occupation listed for him.
(Have you seen the 2 "In Memoriam" notices in papers past for him 1898 and 1898?)
I can't spot his brother Henry after 1861, either....
Just curious if you know what Elizabeth's maiden name was?
Cheers

Hey, you are really going some here!!! :D
George Walter at his marriage to Mary Wilson in 1868 stated he was a mariner, having been in Dunedin 7 months- however, and this is where my curiosity is piqued, the family legend has it that he may have been in Australia as a gold digger for a while prior to arriving NZ.
His death certificate for 1897 states arrival 1866, informant Mary.
I have seen those notices in Papers Past, Mary also inserted one at the 10th anniversary of his death.
Another family legend is one of GW brothers was in South Africa as an Anglican priest.
I am pretty sure it is "my" William H{arvey} who died at age 19 in 1865, so that leaves me with Henry to be the priest. ??
Elizabeth has confusing evidence as to her maiden name:
mothers maiden name on GW's death certificate says "Miller"
There is also family mention of it being Burgess, and a birth/ death in 1839 has a George Burgess Adams in Alverstoke.
(A thought occurs to me that she may have been married to a Miller person, but nee Burgess.) ???

This looks like the daughter Helen, in 1861, though:
1861: Millbrook Rd - Millbrook, Southampton, Hampshire
RG9 / Piece: 684 / Folio: 97 / pg 16
Head: Anne BEWES 34, widow, Fund Holder, b Plymouth Devon
Dau: Augusta A BEWES 10, Scholar, b Ipswich, Suffolk
Servant: Helen ADAMS 20, unm, Governess, b Gosport, Hants
Plus a Cook and a maid in house.
Cheers ;D

Our posts crossed.... ;D
Ah, I had a sinking feeling G W might have been a mariner. In which case he could well have signed up very young and was well off at sea in 1861...... And if perchance he fudged his age to sign up, as many a fellow did, he may be listed in England census as wrong age and/or simply born "Hampshire...... :'(
On seeing the 1841 Census for George 31 & Elizabeth 30 with Helen 1 - I looked for their marriage Sep 1837 to 1841 but didn't find it. Then, saw the 1839 birth & death of the child George Burgess ADAMS too (it's also on the IGI) and imagined that might be their first born....
But still no marriage found - so maybe it was before Sep 1837 . Unless Elizabeth is really the fabulously named Betsey DELICATE who married a George ADAMS in Sep 1837 Alverstoke (FreeBMD & IGI) ;D
The good thing about your surprise 1851 result, is at least she married William SEARLE after the start of Civil Reg, so that cert should have her father''s name/surname on ithe cert ;D . X all fingers that hers was a legitimate birth!
Cheers

Ah, Ambly, you are a treasure!!
many many thanks for the results....
I did find a marriage for a George Adams and Elizabeth Miller in march 1/4 1838 Wareham,(free BMD) not too far from where "my" G and E started their family.
I wish Betsey Delicate was mine, ;D

I think that I can help you with George Adams' wife Elizabeth.
On 26 Jun 1838 George Adams married Elizabeth Burgess in St-Dunstan-in-the-West, London.
This is confirmed by the newspaper article which reads:
At St Dunstan's in the West, London, on Tuesday, Mr George Adams, of Gosport, to Elizabeth, youngest daughter of the late Mr Thomas Burgess, of Nursling Mills, near Southampton.
It also explains why their first born was named "George Burgess Adams"
I am descended from Thomas Burgess' elder daughter Mary

Oh, fantastic Lou!!
Will send PM. :)
I would never have thought to look in London for a marriage between these two given their birth and residences.

Hi Cathy
Not sure if you are still looking for this information by now, but the George W Adams (son of George and Elizabeth Adams) that you mentioned in your post is my Great Great grandfather. I have a book called Land of the Mountain and the Flood by Peter Chandler which provides some information about the son George W Adams. It records that George W Adams (the son)'s early employment in England was at the Eling Mill across the water from Southampton and that he left England for Melbourne when he was 21 years old and spent about two years on the Victorian Gold Fields so your comment about gold mining would be correct.
Apparently he worked briefly on the West Coast of the South Island of NZ in search of gold too before becoming a cellarman at a Brewery in Dunedin where he married Mary Wilson on 18 November 1868 at St Paul's Church in Dunedin (Archdeacon GH Edwards married them). So he must have left England about 1864 by what i can tell.
