i am trying to locate the details of my wifes great grandfather - Arthur Cordell.
I know that he married in 1911 to an Alice Haysom aged 51 (having previously been widowed). Listed on his marriage certificate are his dads details (William Cordell - deceased at this time - who was an agricultural labourer).
I cannot find anyone named Arthur Cordell on the BMD website born around 1859? Perhaps his parents never registered the birth? Anyway I was hoping that someone would be willing to do some searching on the census records to see if they can find his details around this time so that I can establish more information about his parents/siblings etc.
I think I have found him aged 22 on the 1881 census married to someone called Agnes, with 2 children named Agnes and Elizabeth.
Also of interest is on the marriage certificate in 1911 are two witnesses by the names of George and Gertrude Cordell. I suspect that this is a son/wife or daughter/husband situation - and think this could be confirmed if I could see any census records.
Marriage was registered in the district of West Ham - but records seem to indicate Essex/London/Middlesex?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
I thought that all births had to be registered? Could it be that if his father was a farm labourer that he didn't do it to save money?
Thanks again

Hi
All births were meant to be registered from 1 Jul 1837, though until 1875 the onus was on the registrar to seek them out rather than on the parents to notify the registrar. In reality, compliance by 1859 was pretty good, so I wouldn't conclude just yet that his birth went unregistered.
If the 1881 chap (married to Agnes) is yours, his birthplace was given as Camberwell. Modified: I think Tati's Epping chap looks more promising!
Will see what more I can see
Anna :)

Hi Tati :)
That Epping chap looks good - he's unmarried in 1881 and in service in Woodford: RG11/1734/90/19.
He seems to marry a Margaret S after that...

Arthur's mum is already widowed in 1871. Happy to post the details if you feel we've found your man. What was Arthur's occupation when he married in 1911?
:)

Anna - can you see Arthur's birth registration or his parents' marriage? :P

No! V odd.
Older brother James seems to have been registered at birth:
James Cordell
Sep 1855
Epping 4a 51
and a possible for "Anne"
Annie Cordell
Jun 1857
Epping 4a 58
So why not Arthur? Perhaps he's a natural son of Jane and not of William/Jane - but no sign of a marriage between them at any time. Hmmm...
Anna ???

If we find a marriage this time, the cert would tell her father's name at least ...
(not sure what their name really is ... the handwriting is on the disgusting side!!)
Bonsh(e/a)ll or Boush(e/a)ll anyway, according to what I see in 1891 and 1901 - no marriage either ??? :P
