Title: help please.......
Post by: Helina on Sunday 16 November 08 15:32 GMT (UK)
On my father's side its been rummoned that they came from Northern Ireland. I,ve researched the Coole family back to 1775 living in Bristol UK. What to do next and is there anyway I can find any Coole's from Ireland. Remember my Mother telling me before she met my Father he was looking at family graves in Ireland but nobody in my family at present know how or when or even if.

Without a place to search it will be extremely difficult- 'Northern Ireland' is too vague and could be anywhere. Also, very few records from 1770s will still exist.

Hi Helina.
I don't envy you your task. As aghadowey says, without at least something to go on, it will be an uphill struggle.
I had a look on Emerald Ancestors and only came up with 4 results, 3 marriages and 1 census return.

1901 Census.
Julia Coole, age 29. Not married. Church of England. Townland of Crom. Parish of Galloon. County Fermanagh.

3 marriages.
Peter Foster married Betty Coole, on the 23 February 1868, in Feeny Roman Catholic Church, Parish of Banagher. Civil District Newtown Limavady. Co Londonderry.

David Moody married Emily Coole, on the 2 January 1879, in Tullylisk Church of Ireland, Parish of Tullylisk, Civil district Banbridge, Co Down.

James Richard Coole married Susan Glass, on the 25 February 1896, in Aghadrumsee Church of Ireland, Parish of Clones, Civil district of Clones, Co Fermanagh.

I think Lord Brookeborough's family home is called Castle Coole or Coolebrook, which I think is in Fermanagh. Someone else may be able to correct or add to this if I have got it right. It may or may not help.

Regards,
Dixie

Its not quite clear to me if you think the irish connection is before 1775 or later. You have done well to get back to 1775 anyway.  I have tried Society of Genealogists London their library and documents both of which gave no clues.
On looking at Familysearch with Ireland and Coole, the IGI entries amount to some 20 entries, the variant of spelling widen into Cool, the ulster counties include a Co Donegal, and a Co Monaghan entry.  Family search also include Cole, Coles, Koel. McCool , McCoole
Looking at Griffiths valuation lists about 1860 on www.failteromhat.com/post1845.php
Coole Thomas Church Lane,Gardens St. Canices Kilkenny
Coole William Kircubbin Inishargy Down
Coole William Ardmore Muff Donegal
there are plenty of McCoole's on this site as well
If you use the askireland griffiths valuation you can hopefully see where each Coole lived on a map..
Sooner or later the brick crumbles
I havent tried Ancestry and google itself
good luck onwards Jim

Hi Adam. I would suggest that you get in touch with Beryl Brotherhood, who has a lot of Coole`s on her GOONS list. Best wishes, Rosemary(nee Coole).
Now you can look up Goons but I cant find any trace of Coole or Brotherhood I suggest you send them Goons an email quoting that source for an explanation

another source is http://www.lennonwylie.co.uk/index.htm, these are much more recent say 1880 etc  listing Cooles in the Belfast and Ulster Street directory
 Dont give up Jim

Thanks Jim,

I'll try that, have been in touch with Adam Coole before and he was not much help although I think he is connected to the Birmingham Cooles, they originally came from Bristol.

Keeping an eye on half way stops, I have read somewhere that there are hundreds of Coole recorded in the Isle of Man. Personally I think the Street directory add up as the best source so far.
If he actually went looking in Ireland, he might have become enchanted with the legends of Finn McCool but most likely  he would gone visiting someones recent grave,
Tombstones from Ulster is a sister website of the Ulster Historical Foundation, and reports no Coole memorial inscriptions , just Cooley in Co Antrim  in Holywood co down.
I am a bit slow in picking up the emphasis of an ee sound that gets spelt ey.  If I was feeling brickwalled, I would explore that spelling Cooley as just possible an offshoot of some of his recent ancestors, the spelling possibly imposed by those that kept registrars etc. Someone else who knows the ulster scots language and dialects might offer thoughts to you on this one. Good luck anyway, jim

Hello Helina

What are the names of those earliest known Coole's.

In the Register of the Parish of Shankill 1745-61 there are three Cooly's which might be worth looking into (page 102).

Baptism - 20th December 1750 Thomas Cooly son of William Cooly and Flora Cooly (otherwise MacClean).

and perhaps

Baptism - 11th June 1746 Mary Greer, daughter of Alexander Greer and Eleanor Greer alias Cooey.

It would be interesting to see if any of those names appear in your next generation in Bristol.

Gary

Helina,
Sorry I cannot help you with the Coole family name however, I notice the surname Lewis of Bristol in your other interests. An ancestor of mine from Newtownhamilton, County Armagh married Frederick Cecil Lewis of Chesterfield Road, Bristol.

Yours, etc.,   Newgent.
