Looking for an answer as to why my cousin's mother had a miniature Glengarry (flat tartan bonnet/cap).
Question...
where did she get it from and why?
from my cousin...
She had a brother in law killed in the 14-18 war 59777 Cpl L C Addison RAMC.
My cousin recalls she had in a large picture frame a citation to I believe her brother JOSEPH ARTHUR CHALLIS also killed in the war. In the frame was his photo, a letter from? the King, some information about him and a large "coin" about 5 inches, or to you clever people 127mm diameter.where did that go, haven't a clue.

She had a brother in law killed in the 14-18 war 59777 Cpl L C Addison RAMC.
There is 59777 Addison (RAMC) listed on the Medal Roll, but none listed on the CWGC (I have searched by name and service number)

What was the full name of her brother (Challis)?
The "large coin" would be a death penny. Google it and you'll find some images
-
Thankyou Kyt
I have just emailed my cousin for more info as some of it doesn't add up....so L.C Addison didn't die in WW1.........Leonard C it is, which gives me something to look at!
Thankyou Neil
a death penny is new to me, will look it up now
As for Challis I/we need to know a surname.......email has been sent but could be days before I get a reply!
Thanks again

The surname appears to be Challis, and I assume the mini glengarry (and the death penny?) was something to do with him.....still waiting for christian name

The person i'm looking for the death record of is JOSEPH ARTHUR CHALLIS and the glengarry (hat) must have been to do with him?
Joseph was born in the June qtr of 1897 within the Chelmsford R.D (High Easter?) and he died in the Great War 1914-1918
I can see a Joseph Alfred Challis who was killed on the 2nd Nov 1918 Flanders, France.....he was born Tolleshunt D'arcy (Maldon R.D) in the Mar qtr of 1891....but he was an L/Sgt No 22783 in the Grenadier Guards and with out looking they could possibly have worn Glengarry's...is that correct
Perhaps he was a relative?
Thanks

Thanks again

Hiya Bryant! Found this post while searching the forums for information on my family, and i'm a relative of Joseph Alfred Challis! A relative told me that he died of influenza during WW1, and I see that during your research you came across some information about a Joseph Alfred Challis who died during the war, so there's a good chance it might be the same man! I've only just started researching my family tree and haven't learnt how to look up military records, so any advice on finding out more about my relative would be gratefully received! :)
Best wishes,
Laura Challis

Hello Laura
Welcome to rootschat....its a great site for someone starting out on family history and its free
go up the page to reply 6 and click on the web address and you will see where Joseph is laid to rest
Joseph Alfred Challis isn't one of mine but indirectly is part of my cousin's mother's family
How Is Joseph connected to you (do not provide info on living relatives)

Hi Bryant! It's Joseph Alfred Challis i'm related to rather than Joseph Arthur Challis, the url seems to have info on Joseph Alfred rather than Arthur. Though all from around the same area so wouldn't be surprised if they're related, hopefully i'll find out one day when my research gets that far! Will send you a PM in a minute with more info on how i'm related! :)

In the RAMC Roll of Honour for WW1 there is a Pte Robert Addison KIA 7 June 1917...Nil others of that name I'm afraid

Thanks Bryant thats a huge help! Hadn't managed to trace back that far yet, saves me some work! ;D Shame there doesn't seem to be a link between Joseph Alfred and Joseph Arthur though!!
