Post by: loz_scotland on Wednesday 12 November 08 18:50 GMT (UK)
Hi,
I have an OPR birth record for Robert Wilson East Kilbride 1825 . There is a name that I cannot decipher which I think may be the place or farm that they lived, can anyone help out

Thanks Laura

Hi Laura,

Welcome to RootsChat!

Hmmm, I think you have misread! Tinnoch (the last word on that line) is Elizabeth's maiden name.

Another daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth named Jean was christened 1823 in East Kilbride. The IGI entry confirms mother's name.

Hi Laura,

Welcome from me too!  :)

Is it the word at the right hand side just above Tinnoch which says something like Brank......hall?

I'm not familiar with that area but hopefully someone will be along soon who has the answer.

Anne

Sorry! Computer is going as slow as a week in the jail tonight

Oops!!  :-[  :-[ I totally missed that word, taking it to be from the previous baptism. The name is Brancumhall or, as spelt in the image, Brankumhall.

Janet posted first. :)

Thanks for the welcomes and the help. Does anyone know what that would have been around 1825 was it a hamlet or a farm or was there an actual hall there where my ancestor may have worked ?

Hi Janet,

You are correct when you said it was built up with houses! There are playing fields around it though. On the site of Brancumhall, there is Brancumhall Road, which leads onto a few housing estates.

I've attached an old map with the farm/estate on it.

Hi,
Thanks for that now I can pinpoint the area. My great great great grandparents Andrew Wilson and Elizabeth Tinnoch had their first 4 children in Galston Ayrshire (Andrew ,Janet,James and Margaret)where Andrew was a farmer they then appear to have moved to East Kilbride between 1815 and 1818 and had a further 4 children(Elizabeth,William, Jean and Robert) but none of the OPR's give Andrew's profession when he has moved to East Kilbride . I have no idea why an Ayrshire farmer would have moved moved from Ayrshire any suggestions ? I cannot find any  matches by the 1841 census although I pick up Andrew the son my great great grandfather from 1851 census onward .

The buildings shown on the map were still showing on the 1935 map. It looks like there are houses built on that spot now.

:) Hello my name is Christopher Ladds and I am a local historian for the Calderwood/Calderglen/St Leonards area of East Kilbride. Pretty much all that is already said on this thread on Brankumhall Farm is all that is known. The farm was at least as early as 1747, although it is likely to have been one of the more ancient landholdings in the area as the name is ancient Welsh in origin. An ancient Welsh tribe known as the Damnoni inhabited this district in the ancient past. (*)  Happy Hunting!  ;D

Hi David,
Great to hear from you   yes James was born 20/02/1807  I am a direct descendant of his sister Margaret who was born in 1809. I have the marriage for Agnes and John in Tarbolton 1795 but did not know Agnes was born in Sanquar, what led you to that ?

Hi, I am descended from James Hislop, John and Agnes's son. His son Mungo, went to live in New Zealand. I have some information about this family, if you are interested. Where do you live? I currently live in Australia. Regards, Julia
