William Penman (41) and his family - Nessman on A*y - were living at 33, Stone Ra??, Lumphinnans in 1861.
What will the word after Stone be, please? I don't think it is Road.

you need to give a reference to the census. can't find which one you mean by Nessman?
SP has 2 families putting in Williams details - 1 in Auchterderran - 25 west Bell and 1 in Kinglassie.

My apologies for any confusion - it was the 1861 Census
A*y as below:- Source Citation: Parish: Ballingry; ED: 2; Page: 5; Line: 13; Roll: CSSCT1861_53; Year: 1861.
However I used SP and I was trying to read the image on that. I'm not sure now whether SP had transcribed Penman correctly. I'd like to avoid someone necessarily having to view SP if at all possible.
I supposed (hoped?) that someone may know Ballingry well and . .
My regards

hello fred
In 1861 at Stone Row, Lumphinnans,
parents were William (41) and Janet (37) Penman and their three children Jean (14), Christian (7), James (5) and Ann (11months).
Ten years later they were at West mains, Bothkennar, Stirling where Christina (17) was the eldest, James and Ann were there too. There were two additional children Maggie (5) and Cathrine (3).
I have not checked the 1881 Census.
Christian/Christina Penman is my great grandmother. She married Charles Hogg in 1878 at Bothkennar.
I have not found a Robert as you can see but like you I have a direct link to a Christian Penman :)
Hope we can connect. Do let me know.

hi reiver
unfortunately my christian is not the same in 1861 she is 27 married and living with her husband at 69 Cowpits, Inveresk, Midlothian. She is Mrs Daniel McLeish and has 4 children:
Daniel M Mcleish 28
Christina M Mcleish 27
Alexander M Mcleish 6
Mary M Mcleish 4
William M Mcleish 2
Daniel M Mcleish 8 MO
her parents are William Penman born 1798 and Mary Edmonstone (adamson) born 1803 fife
however there may be still a link through William and Janet does the surname Strang mean anything to you.
as i now think that is my link to Lumphinnans
yours fred

Hello fred,
Strang is not a surname I have come across. My William married Janet Syme at Innverkeithing in Fife in 1852.
William Penman, I have, as being baptised in Clackmannan in 1820 seemingly the 11th of 13 children. Parents were Michael Penman and Mary Bauchop - her surname is spelled differently wherever you look :) :).
It may be worth following up PENMAN topic messages on ROOTSCHAT on the Clackmannan and Stirling Boards as well - if you havn't already done so.
