Title: Rough Family
Post by: bravaal on Monday 10 November 08 14:11 GMT (UK)
Hi,
Can anyone help find the parents of William Rough born 1 Aug 1804 in Glamis
It would knock down a brick wall that has been standing for a few years now.

regards

hi,
Sincere apologies, I picked the wrong William Rough, think it was having a CRAFT moment :)
William Rough born 1 Aug 1804 was the son of William Rough and Catherine Gordon, she was born 1772 in Kirriemuir.

I have been trying to tie them into my own Glamis "Rough" Family which kicks off with Andrew Rough b 1785 spouse Catherine Moncur.

regards
Billy Rough

Hi Billy,

In case you didn't have it, there is a gravestone (no. 19) at Glamis the Memorial Inscription of which reads:

1876. And. Rough (died) 10.7.1842 (aged) 53, w(idow) Cath. Moncur (died) 11.9.1851 (aged) 62. (Stone erected) by family.

Stone 20 says:

And. Rough, Plans of Thornton, (died) 22.2.1887 (aged 74), w(idow) Ann Drummond (died) 30.4.1890 (aged) 70, da(ughter) Ann 23.10.1867, gs (grandson) Wm. Rough McLean d(ied) at Plans of Thornton 17.7.1878 (aged) 4.

David Raitt

PS - actually I am on a different screen - what was the question again? I have down that William (b 1 aug 1804) in Glamis to William Rough and Catherine Godron - he (Will Jnr) married Helen Wilson in 1839 and they had several kids, one of whom was John to married Mary Wilson Smith in 1895.

Further to this - I just looked up births of William Rough, parent Andrew (and/or Moncur) in ScotlandsPeople. I was hoping it might show the William who was the father of William born 1804. Adding Moncur or Catherine didn't bring up anything - but leaving her out, there were two for Angus - both Glamis as it happens, but not so old. One was William Rough born 25 Oct 1816 father Andrew Rough (no mother given) and the other was William Henderson Rough born 14 Deb 1851 to Andrew Rough and Ann Drummond.

I didn't want to waste more credits to view the full details of especially the former.

Regards

David

Hi David,
Many thanks for your help, yes the graves at Glamis are my grandparents... Andrew(b1785)+Catherine Moncur and Andrew(b1812)+Ann Dummond resp.   I have the parents of Andrew Rough (1785) as Andrew+Jan Taylor.
The Kirriemuir Roughs which I am trying to tie in, have a William Rough (no info) and Catherine Gordon(b1772) in Kirriemuir having three children all born in Glamis, Charlotte (1802) William (1804) and George (1806) hence the assumption of a link.
It is a puzzle I have been trying to solve for a few years now.

A very happy new year

Happy New Year too. I didn't have down that William R and Catherine Gordon also had a daughter called Charlotte.

My "relationship" goes through their son George and his son David (1840) who married my grandmother's sister Jean Lindsay of Tannadice. David Rough in Geelong, Australia (with whom you have been in contact before) is descended from George's brother William.

It would be nice to try and make the link - I have been concentrating on my Arbroath and Gamrie ancestors and have not looked at the Lindsay side yet - but I will check the other MIs in Angus to see whether I can come up with anything else.

By the way it seems that Catherine Gordon died on 4 March 1855 at Fletcherfield, Kirriemuir. I haven't looked at her death extract which would give the exact address, plus also who registered death (probably on of the children) - it should also give her husband - but he was probably deceased. Anyway, maybe I will look this up out of interest.

Regards

David
