Title: Help finding a will - George Newman, died Sudbury 1913
Post by: vanessac on Sunday 09 November 08 05:48 GMT (UK)
Just wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction please.  I am trying to find a will for George Newman, died, September quarter 1913, age 75 years, 4a, pg 805. I have no idea of where to start looking, any help would be greatfully received.

thanks

Wills, if you go to Holborn it won't tell you who any monies was left to, it will just tell you how much and who was administering it, the only way you will find out who he left his money to is to purchase the will at a cost of £5.00 with an SAE to

Postal searches and copies department
Probate Registry
Castle Chambers
Clifford St
York YO1 9RG

if there is no will I understand you will still be charged, so the best thing to do it to visit Holborn if you can, address below, I am not sure if you can order a will from Holborn but if not you can use the address above

Address
London Probate Department
 First Avenue House
42-49 High Holborn
Ground Floor
Holborn London
England
WC1V 6NP

This is correct as far as I know

Happy hunting

Yes, I think it is suffolk.  He lived in and around foxearth, essex, but I not some of the births of his children were registered ad sudbury, suffolk.   As was his death.

At Holborn you pay £5 and wait about 20 mins and they photocpy the actual will there for you.

The records are arranged in large books alphabetically for each year, but do make sure you also check early into the next year as probate can take some time.

The indexes will tell you the deceased name date of death and last address, and how much they left.If you are very lucky it will mention a family member, but only if they are the executor, usually it's a bank or solicitor in the more recent ones(20th century)

If you do have to post a request to York be aware they take ages to come!

Hi there Vanessac ;D

Just found your message,   I have a few George Newman's on my tree,  born in Suffolk and Essex,  do you know of his parents?   Perhaps we could be of assistance to each other?  ;)

Regards
