Hi All
I am having a spot of bothere with the 1851 census, so looking for some help PLZ. Here goes
Looking for MARY BRAUN formerly (KEMP), born abt 1818, poss Pembrokeshire.
Address I have is 21 Colchester Street, St. Olave.
Children I have are:
William Bn. Southwark 1837
Emily Eliza Bn Liverpool 1840
Mary Ann Bn Liverpool 1844
Miriam Frances Bn Mile End, London, 1848
Harriett Bn Stepney 1850
She seems to have been living with a Jonaton Budgeon and his children at the time of the census and married said Jonathon in 1858.
Her first husband was John James Braun and their name was registered as Bryan on the 1841 Census for West Derby, Liverpool and he 'seems' to have died or disappeared sometime between the 1841-51 Census
I know it's a long shot, but would really appreciate some help.
Many thanks
Ken

Hi Barbara
Many thanks for your help. Yet another name for this family!!!! Braun/Bryan/Braun/Bennie - I wonder where the bennie name came from, but could have been a transcription error.
I have been trying to find a record of John Braun's death but so far have not had any luch. I do believe that there may have been an epidemic going around and it has been suggested that he went back to Switzerland and died there.
At least I have something else to go on. I have been unable to use the 1851 Census on FindMyPast (1837 Online) as it is not available at present.
Once again, many thanks

As I said, there has been an amendment made on ancestry, as it was a transcription error. If you have access you can contact the person who made the amendment, they may be researching the family
Well done Meliora :)

Many thanks Meliora. Yet another name change! But it does tie in. Looks like I'll have to send away for a cert.
Many thanks for the help

I'd ask the GRO to check the cert for known details before parting with your cash, it costs £3 for a reference check which is included in the £7 fee if the details are correct

Many thanks for the tip, Barbara. Do I just phone them and ask what details are on the cert - never done that before

Hi Ken,
Here's the link to the online GRO site for certificate ordering:
www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
That should tell you all you need to know. There is a part of the form where you can ask them to check references including parent's names, spouse names etc. They say that if you have done your own searching in the GRO indexes and have found more than one reference to the name you are researching, or are unsure which is the entry you require, they offer reference checking online. The charge is £7 for action on the first entry, which includes the cost of the certificate, and £3 for checking each subsequent reference against the information you have provided. You must give one piece of information that you are sure will appear on the certificate, e.g. the exact date of the event. A certificate will only be issued if the entry matches the checking point you give them.
Or if you know which is the local register office you can ask them to check for known details before you buy
List of Register Offices at http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/regoff.html
Bethnal Green may come under Islington now, not sure, you could ask them:
The Register Office, Islington Town Hall, Upper Street, London, N1 2UD.
