Title: Hi there :) Researching the Scott family

I wonder if you lovely people might be able to help me.

I am searching for my great grandfather James Charles Scott and his father, whom according to my great grandfather's marriage certificate was known as James Charles Washington Scott.

He was also a Dock labourer in Rotherhithe.

I have searched high and low for my great grandfather's birth certificate but after 2 in correct certificates I am wondering if James Charles Washington Scott wasn't the name he usually went by.

However I have found who I think is my great grandfather in the 1901 census but although it claims he was born in Deptford, London I have only managed to find 2 James Charles Scott born in that part of London and in that year (1898) and neither of them were this person I found on the census.

I am 90% sure this is the right person because as he lives in the area my mum was brought up in (only a few streets away). The only thing is on the census his father is known as Charles rather than James.

So if anyone can help me with this, that would be fantastic.

(matches age 3 on 31 March 1901)

Tati I think you may be on to something there. And its useful to know the time of year that they did the census too.

Depending on what you are searching to find out (his exact birth date or his mother's maiden name), you could alternatively opt for the purchase of Wilhelmina's birth cert:

Wilhelmina Scott
Sep 1884 Greenwich 1d 1046

Thanks, I got the birth certificate yesterday and it is yet another dead end  :'(

Funnily enough on the birth certificate the father did the same job, "Dock labourer" but unfortunately it wasn't unusual around that area as it was right next to docklands.

Because Scott was such a common name I am not sure where to look now.

Update: 

I have now found him on the WW1 pension records by matching the address on his marriage certificate. He was born in November 1898 according to the dates on the records, I've had another look at the birth certificates I ordered and the closest one was October  :'( which I guess means he wasn't born in London.
