Do hope someone can help with this puzzle. Sorry it's a bit lengthy but I think you need to know the whole story.
Elijah John PRYCE and his wife Mary were Journeymen Carpenters (well I suppose strictly speaking it was just Elijah). Elijah born 1815 Walworth, Surrey; Mary b.1814 Stepney, Middx (taken from census but I don't know her maiden name).
1851 has them in Chelsea with Mary b.1846 Lambeth, Elijah J b.1847 Q1 Ealing and John b.1849 Chelsea.
1861 has them in Scotland

1871 they are in Shoreditch, London with just Mary who is unmarried.
1881 still in Shoreditch just Elijah and wife.
Elijah J PRYCE b.1847 teams up with a Clara and become Professional Musicians. Haven't found a marriage but this could have been in Scotland. Their first son, Ernest, was born Peterhead, Scotland on 1891 census when they were all Musicians living in lodgings in Rhymney, Mon. 1901 has them at 3 Oak Street, Ealing where Alfred was born 1 month earlier than the census.
Can't find Elijah b.1847 with Clara in 1871 or 1881. Or Elijah on his own for those years. So I think perhaps they were in Scotland still. It could be that they didn't marry until about 1885 as the first son (known) was born 1887.
Many thanks to anyone who can find something for me.

Hi Ozziejoan
There is a birth of an Alfred Ernest Price showing in St Nicholas Aberdeen in 1888. If it is the right birth, it should also include the date and place of marriage of parents. I can't easily see marriage for parents in Scotland nor an entry for parents in 1871/81.

Thank you Monica.
Not too sure if that will be the right family. Ernest b.1887 is shown as Peterhead and I thought that was a Glasgow area.
Also, wherever I have managed to find them, they have always been PRYCE not Price.
And Ernest was obviously still alive when Alfred was born in 1891 as they both appear on the 1891 and 1901 censuses with their parents. So I don't think they would have given both sons the Alfred name.
I appreciate your efforts and hope that someone might be able to come up with something for them.
Cheers,
Joan

Hi Joan
Peterhead is in Aberdeenshire not Glasgow area. In respect of spelling of Price/Pryce, I wouldn't be so concerned given that spelling variations were a sign of the times.
Whether it is the right birth, you won't know until you have a look unfortunately.

Hello Monica,
My apologies to all concerned for giving too much on the 1861 census result for the above.
I wonder if you would be able to give me whatever reference is necessary so that I can acquire the birth cert. for Alfred Ernest PRICE 1888 at St.Nicholas, Aberdeen, please?
Thanks for the geography lesson ;) should have checked it myself first.
Cheers,
OzzieJoan

The certificate is available to view on line at the official pay to view site for Scottish BMDs and census images, www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, for £1.20GB (minimum spend £6.00 but you could also obtain an original image of the 1861 census for the family as well for another £1.20).
The references for the birth are:
1888 Alfred Ernest Price - St Nicholas/Aberdeen City - GROS ref: 168/01 1580

Hello Monica,
Thank you very much for the reference. Hopefully that might get me a little further.

Oh, Helen, this sounds too good to be true. I'm totally excited about what you might have.
I'm doing it on behalf of my Aunt Marie who is the daughter of Alfred PRYCE and is now in her 80's. She has no other known family except her son, Peter, who has just left England to live in New Zealand. For the last 50 years her life has revolved around him and, although she doesn't let it show, his leaving must have left a huge hole. I thought that a few new cousins (even distant ones) might help fill the gap. She is used to the computer but knows nothing about genealogy research.
I'm going to give you my webmail address for your first reply to this, and after that (offsite) I will give you my ISP email address. (*)
As the name implies, we live in Australia - central inland Queensland to be more accurate. Aunt Marie lives in Canterbury, Kent.
In great anticipation, kind regards,
Joan

Hi Helen and joan
I am hoping you can both help. I am researching the same family it it my grandfathers family. and I am coming up against a brick wall.
My aunts have give me details of elijah john pryce and mary they also gave me details of elijah john and clara, but I have also have lots of missing pieces. There was also a daughter of elijah john pryce and clara, she was called Annie pryce (my great x 2 grandmother) but born before they were supposed to be married so whether she is there's I am unsure. There was also family talk of a spanish connection. so any info you both have would be great
Many Thanks

Hi T
Thanks for your email. Helen here.
As far as I know Joan isn't researching this line now - she was looking on behalf of a relative of hers but Elijah is not actually related to Joan.
I was researching on behalf of an Australian contact and have VERY comprehensive info on Elijah Pryce.......I will have to email the contact in Australia to check it's OK to pass info on to you - I expect she'll say yes :)
We didn't trace descendants of his daughter but I know we would both be interested to add them to the tree.
I can explain the rumour of a spanish connection as well. I'm not surprised you have some gaps - it is a complicated story....
I'll email when I've heard from Australia

Hi Helen,
That would be great to eventually understand the family history after so many stories. I am hoping I can also find some photos among the family archives as I believe one of my aunts my have some. If your friend also has any that would be great.
It would be great to add annie pryce to your friends family tree. She ended up in north england and as she went on to have 9 children which means we have a very large family over here
I would be happy to send my email address if you wish.
Look forward to hearing from you

Hi
I am related to Elijah and Clara Pryce, as Lawrence Murray and Annie Pryce are my great grandparents. I am interested in the Spanish connection as this is also a story in my family and any info on Clara as I drew a blank on her birth etc.
Any info gratefully accepted and I am happy to share anything I can.
Thanks
Alex
