Hi to Tricia and Genjen
thanks for quick reply. The only info I have is that Philip was a plumber and he married my ggmother called Anne (surname unknown), she died about 1918. Philip was apparently quite a bit older than her.
They were living in Dublin in 1884 and had children Lucy (Louisa), James, John (Sean) born 1870, Terence, Julia and Brigid.
Above Sean went on to ride the winner in the Grand National in 1898 )(a big thing in our family!) The spelling of the name had become Gourley by this time).
Thanks again

This family unit isn't around(that I can see) on the 1851 so presume they were still in Ireland.
It doesn't give Philip's occupation on the 1861 but as I said I can't check the original.
Do you know the birth places of those children - does the date put them in Ireland for the 1871?

Hi Tricia
Re the Gourleys:
Lucy (Louisa) was born in 1884 possibly Dublin, John (Sean) was born in 1869-1871, its not known where.
However its a pity these Gourleys were born in Ireland, in order to be mine, 26 year old Philip would have been born in Ireland, moved to Glasgow then moved to Dublin, a strange cycle. I would have hoped he would have been born in Scotland.
thanks anyway
PS Would it be possible to look up Gourley(or Gourlay =Irish spelling) details on the 1871 Irish census, containing a Philip married to Anne with a son John, possibly in Dublin? Although I think most if not all records may have been destroyed.

If no-one else picks this up on this thread it may be better to post on the Irish Board giving the details from the 1861.
I just don't know what Irish census records survived.
Sorry, Tricia

First complete census for Ireland is 1901.

Hi Pete,
I believe that Philip (Gourlay) Gourley is my great grandfather. Julia Gourley who lived in Dublin is my grandmother. I recently found the grave of Anne Gourley and some of her children in Glasnevin cemetary in Dublin. Do you have information on other relatives.

Hi Mary
Anne Gourlay was my great grandmother. Do you have her age and date of death from her gravestone. Also is her husband Philip buried with her - if so any similar info?
Your cousin Esther sent me lots of stuff about your side of family. Let me know separately on e-mail at (*) any requests you have, although I imagine you know more than me.
best regards
Pete

Hi Pete,
I have to make a few more posts before this site will allow me to PM message you as your email address was removed by the moderator.
The grave record from Glasnevin shows those who are buried there and their relationship
to the grave owner John Gourley:
Anne Gourley died 13/02/18 aged78, blank
Marion Athorn died 16/04/36 aged 70, sister
Elizabeth Gourley died 03/04/49 aged 75, sister in law
Julia Reid died 23/04/52 aged 67, sister
John Gourley died 04/06/52 aged 81, owner
Christophe Gourley died 15/08/80 aged 69, nephew
Lucy Gourley died 31/10/85 aged 77, niece
There is also a posting on ancestry.com regarding a daughter born to John Gourley when he lived in England. Unfortunately I don't think the rest of the family were aware of her existence as he didn't marry her mother.
Who was your grandmother/father from Anne and Philip's children. What country are you bsed in.
Regards
Mary
