Title: Seeking George Edge - Bickerton
Post by: Exiled Mancunian on Friday 07 November 08 16:28 GMT (UK)
My wife Gt gt Grandfather on her mothers side was George Edge. He is shown on the 1871 census for Bickerton as aged 47, born Edge, with his wife Eliza (49, born Bickerton) and children John (15, born Bickerton) and Sarah (6, born Bickerton).

On the 1881 census he is still in Bickerton, aged 57 but now shown as born at Malpas) still with his wife Eliza (58) and Sarah (16). There was no sign of John, but his granddaughter Elizabeth Ruscoe (age 11) was living with him.

He had another daughter, Elizabeth, who had married James Roscoe (or Ruscoe) at Bickerton Chapel in 1868.

I think he was born about 1824/5 and I am lead to believe that Eliza may have been his second wife (though I have no proof as yet). I also believe his father was called Richard but again I have no proof as yet - or who is mother was.

I would be grateful for any information, however small, about George Edge and his family.

Thanking you all in advance,

Exiled Mancunian

Hi

Have you checked the 1861 census to see if  Eliza was his wife at that time

You really need to track down a marriage and get his marriage cert to establish his fathers name

There are 2 possible births for daughter Sarah on freebmd but this is the likeliest as Nantwich reg district included Bickerton.  Her birth cert will give Eliza's maiden name

Births September qtr 1865

Edge  Sarah     Nantwich  8a 320

freebmd has an 1855 marriage Nantwich for George Edge - one of the possible spouses was Elizabeth Harding

Hi

If you look at the 1871 image - daughter Elizabeth Roscoe and hubby George are the next family to George & Eliza

1851 census for the place called Edge in Cheshire given that George used it on the 1871 census

All surname Edge and all b in Edge

Sophia 49 widow pauper
Charles 10
Henry 7
Then grandchildren as follows

Margaret 9
Emma 5
Elizabeth 6months

This ties in with Elizabeths age of 20 in 1871

In 1861 all are shown as b Malpas and  Elizabeth is still with Sophia plus another grand daughter Frances aged 7

I'm dubious now - just found a marriage on Ancestry between George Edge and Sophia Alman in 1827 Malpas.  If your George was b 1824/25 it doesn't fit with Sophia being his mother

I suspect that George Edge started life as George Allman.  On the 1871 census George and Eliza Edge are living in the same house that George & Eliza Allman were living in in 1861 and 1851, with children of the right forenames and ages.  They were then living with Eliza's father, Thomas Lees, a tailor.  I do not know why George Allman would have changed his name (and that of all his children) to Edge.   A George Allman Edge (of the right age to be the George Edge in question) of Bickerton died in 1896).  I first thought that he must be the George Allman, son of Sophia, but on his marriage certificate he gives his father's name as John Allman, labourer.  If I am right and he did change his name it must have been between the time of the 1861 census and 1866 when his daughter, Rebecca married Joseph Cornes.  She was using the surname Edge by that time.  Maybe he was Sophia's son and had just found out his true parentage or maybe he invented a father on his marriage certificate to hide his illegitimacy.  There must have been some reason for the change of name.  Any ideas?

Hello there,

There is a baptism of a George Edge at Malpas, St Oswald on 25/08/1825. He is shown as the son of John and Charlotte Edge of Iscoyd, labourer.

In my experience, residents of Bickerton often used Harthill church for their baptisms etc. Bickerton was strictly within Malpas parish but Malpas was some distance to travel in those days.

The Parish Registers of Malpas are on Freereg, which is:

The problem is that at the time of his marriage George was called George Allman.  There is a baptism of a George Allman, January 1824, son of Sophia Allman in Malpas on ancestry.co.uk.  Since she subsequently married a George Edge I thought that he might be a likely candidate to change his name to Edge.  She also had two other children in 1822 and 1826 before she married George Edge.

would the George Edge living at Oak Mount Whaley Bridge In Stockport 1906 be any connection to yours?

Sarah Edge's (daughter of George and Eliza) birth certificate of 1865 shows that Eliza Edge is the same person as Eliza Allman nee Eliza Lee, daughter of Thomas Lee.  This means either that George Allman had died at some point between the date of the 1861 census and Sarah's birth in 1865 and Eliza then married a George Edge, with the Allman children taking the Edge,  or that George Allman changed his name to George Edge for some reason.   I wondered if someone could check whether a George Allman of Bickerton died 1861-1865 or whether Eliza Allman, widow, married a George Edge in the same period.

One further query I'm afraid.  George and Eliza Allman are shown with a 10 year old daughter Elizabeth on the 1861 census. I think this Elizabeth subsequently changed her name to Elizabeth Edge and married James roscoe.  She does not appear in their household on the 1851 census.  Later censuses give inconsistent ages for her with years of birth between 1849 and 1851.  If the age in 1861 is correct, given that the census in 1851 was for the night of 30 March and that in 1861 was for 7 April, the young baby Elizabeth must have been elsewhere in 1851 or was born between 30 March and April 7.  However, I cannot trace her birth on the GRO BMD lists - I have tried 1850 and 1851.  Any ideas?

You've got your dates mixed up roscoebury; you should be looking for Elizabeth on the 1871 census. She's on the same page as the other Edges in Bickerton. Also there in Burwardsley in 1881.
