Title: Chalke/Chalk family Carrowjames/Castlebar
Post by: tlodge60 on Friday 07 November 08 00:09 GMT (UK)
Would anyone have information about the Chalke/Chalk family in Mayo? They appear to primarily be associated with the Castlebar area. The particular branch I am interested in lived at Carrowjames near Belcarra but I have also found some in Castlebar itself.
Thanks
Caroline

You could put a post on the Roots page of www.castlebar.ie, that should get you a reply

On the right botton corner of the webpage there a link to "Find you Mayo Roots"

The 1901 census has 2 relevant entries:
Jane Chalk (Knockbaun, Drum) I suspect is the widow of Thomas Chalk(e) who might possibly be the son of the Michael Chalke of Griffiths in Carrowjames.
Ellen Reilly of Carrowjames has 4 children, 2 surname Chalke and 2 Reilly. I think that she is Ellen Concannon who was married to Michael Chalke, and who was probably a son of Griffiths Michael.

The 1901 census also lists a Bridget Chalk in Drunganagh East, Kildacommoge parish but I don't know how she is connected. Would that townland fall under Manulla?

My other half is from Manulla.  He doesnt know the Townland you mentioned, but says that Carrowjames and Drum are in Belcarra which is just about 2-3 miles from Manulla, so the family probably are connected.

If you don't get a reply from the C/bar website try the library in Castlebar
