There are 6 rooms in the chatroom
Common Room 1
and
Common Room 2
England
Ireland
Scotland
Wales
Does anybody ever use any of the rooms besides the Common Room 1 ??
If they are just gathering dust and cobwebs, maybe we should get rid of them and save the expenses for the cleaning lady ??

I never use them - full of cobwebs!!

Newcomers often have a wander around the rooms.
If common room 1 gets full there is sometimes an overspill into common room 2 - I'm not sure how often that happens these days.
-
Just heard that the main room, Common Room 1 only holds 20,
so the surplus automatically get the pleasure of cleaning up Common Room 2
-
Hi Bob
I think they just cause confusion. However there would need to be some arrangements for dealing with the situation when Common Room 1 is full.

It sounds as if you are considering down-sizing. If so, can you leave the facility to add new rooms please? Some of those are so funny. ;D
-
I don't know whether we actually will change anything,
but I was interested to hear some reactions from chatroom users.
-
Would it be possible for room 1 to hold more than twenty as i have notice that quite often there has been more than twenty wanting to use it, if not you will have to keep room 2 for the overspill.

Some of us ventured in once ... once only ... and left screaming !

Only for teens and 20's I M H O !!

Lydart I don't know when you used chatroom, but I use it quite often and I would say the average age would be 40/50. You would be welcomed to come in anytime and you take things at your pace no one would hurry you.

Hmmm ... bit young for me !! ;)

Sometimes people sit in other rooms for a while when they don't like to leave but want a bit of peace, or have banished themselves. Jiminwales often goes to wales and MatthewR sometimes puts himself in England......... I like the chatroom the way it is (but the overflow into room 2 can be quite scary when you realise you are on your own......!) ;D

I know I've gone in when it's been really busy and automatically went into Common Room 2, but then I just get someone on personal message in Common Room 1 and they invite me in and I get in that way.

Hi Lydart,
This thread encouraged me to go into the Chatroom for the very first time just a short while ago.
It was initially very puzzling - thinking back I suspect that was probably because there was no-one else there!
Then a couple of messages arrived saying a couple of people had entered the chatroom. After a couple of boo-boos I twigged that there was a box down the bottom in which to post and send a message - so I did (asking for advice on using the chatroom). Very helpful replies!
I've left while I think about it all. I'll try again when there might be more people around :)
Incidentally, I'm definitely not teens or 20s, and far beyond 40/50 :'(
Cheers,
JAP

Just to say that there are a lot of people who come into the chatroom who are in their 60s, 70s and even 80s!
We always encourage people to take their time and join in when they are ready. You will usually get a lot of hallos when you arrive and regulars recognise when someone is new and try to "look after" them!
I had never been in a chatroom before - I went in for the first time in March this year, filled with trepidation, but it has been worth it.
Lots of good research, help and advice on offer and we have been known to break down a few brick walls.
If you want to come in some time PM me and I will make sure I am there to help you!

I've been to the chatroom a few times and have peeped into the other rooms - never anyone there. I'd have to say I found the experience unrewarding. Lots of people saying "hi" and "bye"to each other as they come and go and a bit of inconsequential chitchat. Maybe it just requires more time to encounter the valuable nuggets there.
-
Hi Lydart my dear buddy!
I don't go in the chat room as much as I used to - usually due to time constraints - BUT - I can assure you there are some very, very, very old people in there! Including ME and I am older than you!
;D ;D ;D ;D
Also - Yes, sometimes it is Hi and Bye and chit chat - many of us have known each other for years and like to hear about the kids or the old man- but if you stick around you will see interesting genealogy questions and answers! AND it is so interesting to have people from so many different parts of the world in one place at the same time - great fun!
-
Maybe it's a time zone problem. What's a good time to visit? I am in the EST zone [i.e., the same as NYC].
-
Nonsense Indi !
I think we are more or less the same age, give or take a month or two ...
-
I agree that using the chatroom has nothing to do with age!
There is quite a bit of hi and bye and chit chat but just ask for help and/or advice and it will be received in buckets full!
Anyway just nice to visit for a bit of company now and then when research is in a lull.
I rarely go in now but used to have a great time in there and made some good friends.
Hi Indi, hope you are well! Best wishes.

Only for teens and twenties? Think I must be midway in my 4th childhood ;D

Rena sometimes runs through those rooms like there's no tomorrow - checking up for loners, dusting them down, re-naming them..................
It's a nice change to pop in there every now and then :)

I haven't been in for ages, but used to pop in occasionally - it could be fast and hectic but always very welcoming. I got some great help - a rellie was found for me within minutes in the 1841 census. This was before it was indexed and I had spent hours and hours doing Blackburn page by page, so it was really appreciated.
Must pop in again soon :D

Hi Selina - and Rena too!
Long time - no chat. I'm doing Ok and hope that you are both well.
I'm going to stick my nose in the chat room tent right now - so if anyone wants to talk - I'll be there
Love
Indi
