I'm looking for John Neil(l)'s birth. He married a Margaret Bunyan in Glasgow in 1859 and died in Millport, Isle of Bute, in 1912. He started out as an iron turner and ended up as an engine fitter.
In every census return, he gives his place of birth as Kilbarchan. And in his marriage return he gives his parents as Jane Mitchell (deceased) and Robert Neil shoemaker. Same on his death return but both parents are now dead.
The only John Neil birth record that I have been able to find in Kilbarchan for around 1835 is for a son of Robert Neil and Jean nee Campbell. This John Neil is with his parents in the Kilbarchan 1841 census and he stays in Kilbarchan and marries and raises a family there. However, there is also another John Neil of about the right age in this census living with a Janet Mitchel (70), Elizabeth Mitchel (15) and Mary Mitchel (12). Given that he names Jane Mitchell as his mother on his marriage and death returns, I have assumed this is my John Neil. However, unless Janet Mitchel's age was incorrectly recorded (always a possibility I'm sure), then his mother does not seem to have been around in 1841.
My request for information about the deaths of Mitchells in Kilbarchan (to which I think you kindly responded) seems to have disappeared from the boards - but the two topics, as you can see, are related.
Any help or information would be very welcome.

This looks like John with family in 1851 - everyone showing as born in Kilbarchan apart from mother Jane who shows a Paisley birth place:

:-\ Just checked on IGI and this is the family that you referred to with mother showing as Campbell. Strange that father Robert shows the same occupation as 'your' John's father.

Just realised should have said the reason the MI posts have been removed is because the Copyright Ed has had complaints from 'suppliers' who own the material being posted. NOT in the case of the posts we made but more generally so they have removed them as a precaution. I think that the Robert Neil family you have both identified is probably not my John Neil's family. For a long time I thought it was, but their son John married and raised a family in Kilbarchan, whereas mine definitely went to Glasgow where he married and raised a family before retiring to Millport.
I think my John Neil is probably the one living with several Mitchels in the 1841 Kilbarchan census. It would fit with his mother being Jane Mitchell. What I don't know is when his mother died or how she was related (if at all) to Mitchell families living in Kilbarchan at the time. I had hoped to find her on an MI - which is why I asked for a look up. Ann, it would be great if you could look up any other Mitchells with MIs of around this time. There was a Jane Mitchell born to James Mitchell and Janet Aitken in August 1805, and I have wondered if this might be John's mother, but obviously I don't know. There is no marriage between a Jane Mitchell and Robert Neil in Kilbarchan that I have been able to find.
I agree that it is odd that my John Neil's father was also a shoemaker. It has crossed my mind that my John might have been his illegitimate son. In which case, I guess he might not have been baptised. But there might have been some sort of bastardy proceedings? I don't know how it works in Scotland.
But also, I think Neil is an Irish as well as a Scots surname, so I have also wondered if my John Neil's parents might have come over from Ireland. Do you know if Kilbarchan was a place that would have attracted Irish immigrants at this time?

There is a John Neil b 12 Aug 1835 Kilbarchan, son of Robert Neil (shoemaker) abd Jane/Jean Campbell. He married Margaret Orr 23 Oct 1834 in Kilbarchan.
