Title: Newhills in Aberdeen
Post by: KeiDun on Sunday 02 November 08 19:20 GMT (UK)
My grandmother was born in "Old Whitemyres, Newhills, Aberdeenshire" in the late 1800s.  In a recent map there appears to be Whitemyres Holdings and a couple of other Whitemyres buildings located near Maidencraig and Skene Road.  For those of you who know your Aberdeen geography, would this area have been "Newhills" in 1891?  Thanks in advance :)

If you look in http://geo.nls.uk/os6inch/google.html at the historic map then it appears to be in Newhills.

Yes, thanks for the link.  What a valuable resource.  It does look like Whitemyres was out by Daviot and the birth was registered in Auchmull, which was out that way, too, I think.  The word "Old Whitemyres" appears on the extract but I dont know if that has any significance.  On a recent visit I ran across a Whitemyre House that seems to be For Sale out that way, too, and this may have been where she was born.  It is strange, however, as she was raised at Milltimber from a very early age and there is a Whitemyre farm and Whitemyre Holdings on a current map that are not too far from Milltimber.  But given that Newhills did not include Milltimber, then I suspect the ordinance map is telling me the truth.

My great grandfather James Donald lived in Old Skene House of Whitmyres (miss spelling Whitmyees) in 1881 census and it was in the parish of Newhills.  In his will it had the following "I James Donald of Maidencraig".  When he died he was living in Cullerlie.

I'm sure this will be of interest to you.

Hi Jean:

Yes, that is an interesting addition.  On the recent map I referred to in an earlier posting, Maidencraig is very close to a Whitemyre Farm and Whitemyre Holdings and these, in turn, are close to Milltimber, whereas Whitemyres in the ordinance map is out by Daviot, a fair distance in the late 1800s, I suspect.  I will need to look more closely at the boundaries of the parish of Newhills, I think, in order to shed more light on my question.

I have had another look at a death certificate for my great uncle and he died at Whitemyres House and as my great grandfather was a farmer it is most likely that it is Whitemyres Farm.
