Hi Tiggi,

This could be them in the 1861, though going under the name of Jeffs, all the other details tally:-

RG9/1732 Folio 36, pages 5/6
Living at Whites Hill, Clifton, Gloucestershire

Thomas Jeffs   Head,    61   Tinplate worker   b. Deddington Oxon
Sarah              wife       46    tinplate saleswoman  Banbury
Matthew         son         16   tinplate salesman   Oxon (can't read it!)

What do you think?

Hi
Thanks Casalguidi
I think yes his name would be Plato but there are several that could fit his DB
I am hoping he is the one I know of who went to USa with his brother Tenet, but still need proof

Thank you Rovert interesting find will look into that one

wow that is interesting Yorklass could it be same couple in 1851 ? using name of Jeffs intead of Bukcland ? I wonder

I know that Tenet & Plato Buckland who I think could be their children had left England for USA  by 1857 Plato was then aged 18 Tenet 25
Tenet wife was a Kezia Jeffs born 1830ish

so I wonder if 1861 family if not Bukcland family 1851 is Keziah & Edith family ?
Keziah did call a daughter Edith so looking good
many thanks everyone this lot have been a brick wall for me and I just couldn;t find anything
thank you

I have some deaths which might be connected to the family I
am trying to find :
All deaths are within Somerset as it was before becoming Avon
and not that far in distance

Sophia Buckland died 1852 Harptree aged 81 born 1771
Absalom Buckland died 1855 Mid Somer Norton aged 36 born 1819
Timotheus Buckland died 1856 Chew Magna aged 102 born 1754
Thomas Buckland died 1869 Bath aged 57
( could this be man in Census 1851 & 1861?)

James Barrington Buckland died 1875  Mid Somer Norton aged 78 - born 1797

If anyone can add anymore to this please do I would love to know about them

Are they any relation to John Buckland (who married Elizabeth Beesley) and his son Thomas Buckland of St. Peter le Bailey, Oxford?

Thomas Buckland was a Master Chimney Sweep at 34 Castle Street, St. Peter le Bailey at the time of the 1851 and 1861 censuses.

Hello, I have just registered here and spotted this thread.  My granny was the daughter of Tryphena Buckland and Tryphena was the granddaughter of (Doctor Dornton) Charles Buckland. Born 1769 in Bledlow, Buckinghamshire, died 1848 Great Missenden, Bucks.
I have not managed to get back any further as I now have moved from Bucks to Pembs in S W Wales.  However, I found this about him ...
CHARLES DOCTOR BUCKLAND HAD TWO WIVES.
MY SIDE IS FROM HIS SECOND MARRIAGE TO MARY NEWEL

MARY HEARN WAS HIS FIRST WIFE, 1770 TO 1795  SO DIED AGED ABOUT 25
TWO CHILDREN BY MARY HEARN

MARY BORN 1790 WHO MARRIED HENRY COOPER
HENRY COOPER WAS ONE OF SEVEN CHILDREN OF ....
MATTHIAS AND SARAH COOPER  MATHHIASONE OF THEIR CHILDREN  WAS BORN GLOUCESTER 1811 AND DIED 1900 IN GUILDFORD, SURREY

PENHELI MARRIED JOE FENNER AND THEY HAD THIRTEEN CHILDREN

==================================
Mary Newell and Doctor Buckland m 1796.  Doctor Charles died in 1848 and in the 1851 Census, Mary was living on her own at No.52 Prestwood, Gt Missenden except for an 18 year old Eliza Essex classed as a servant caring for Mary.  Mary is down as a pauper lacemaker.  Jabez, Charlotte Buckland and their children Jacob, Joseph, Leah and baby Mary were living at No.49, so close to hand.  I think Prestood homes were carts on common.
=============================
1841 Census Doctor Buckland and Mary and family were living on Prestood Common Bucks

Penheli was daughter of (Doctor) Buckland and Mary Hearn.
Penheli was married to Joe Fenner 1825-1932 .  Doctor or Dornton was also referred to as being Timothy.  I quote from my relative's book ...

Doctor  (i.e. Timothy), husband of Mary and  father of Timothy TURNIT Buckland.

Timothy Turnit Buckland born 1806 was my 2nd great grandfather.

Plato is a hard one ... a few!
1. Plato possibly a descendant of old Edward and Diana Buckland *and a BROTHER of Tenant Buckland.  Both Plato and Tenant went to America.

2. Plato son of Bill Hazard and Honor Buckland and cousin of Reni Buckland.  Died 1926 in Marlow, Buckinghamshire where caravan burnt.  Custom was to burn the caravan.

3. Plato half brother of Fred Sandford's wife.  Died before 1928 at Marlow, Bucks.

Tenant... possibly a descendant of old Edward and Diana Buckland* and brother of Plato Buckland.  Both Tenant and Plato went to America.

Tenant was a name used by Bucklands, Lockes and Smiths from their days in Oxfordshire.

Hope this may be of help as it was information gleaned from various articles by my relative.

Hi Tiggi dear friend, I have found a note on Diana, wife of Edward Buckland, mother of Diana (Tehanna) who married a Fletcher.  Had a large number of children baptised in Oxon parishes.  Grandmother of Cinamenta Buckland.  Taken from article "Blackmore's Gypsies" SER 3, Volume XXI page 153 Journals of Gypsy Law Society.  I think for a reasonable fe a photocopy can be provided ... Special Collections Librarian, Univ. of Liverpool Library, P Box 123, Liverpool L69 3DA.  My data is very old mark you

Hi Tiggi- Long time since we talked. I notice in the families you have listed the surname "GOODENOUGH". If you are interested James GOODENOUGH born 1819-21 was also transported to Western Australia. A descendant of his married into my family, isn't that amazing. Let me know if you want his details of arrival & family. He married Mary DALE in England c1844. To the person looking for BUCKLAND, I have said before the Sylvanus BUCKLAND was also transported and if you like to contact me off line, I can pass on some Buckland info- Roser

Hi dear friends.  My computer and router and the phone line at my home were all damaged during a thunderstorm.  PC was turned off as we were watching tv and this was the first clap that did the damage.
Well, I just wanted to apologise for my absence and say that I only got back online this afternoon but hope to continue chatting with you again.  Ann

Hello Tiggi.

The Thomas you found in Somerset in 1851 is actually George. Here are baptisms of three children (one not at home on the 1851 census) :

GARSINGTON, Oxon

Terence BUCKLAND    24.7.1831    George & Sarah, travelling gipsey

BLOXHAM, Oxon

Miscella BUCKLAND    24.2.1833     George & Sarah, gipsies, Bow Brickhill

APPLETON, Berks

Plato BUCKLAND        born 15.3.1839 / baptised 17.3.1839   George & Sally, travelling brazier

Good ancestor hunting to all.

Hi Keith
Yes I am sure its correct parents and I think George used name Thomas as well ( no idea why ?)
As did Sarah use Sally or its a transcription mistake on names

I also think Terence is actually my Tenat Buckland who married Keziah and reason they are not on 1851 Census is because I found them in Cornwall in 1852 for the birth of their 1st child so could be travelling down there from Somerset.

What I would like to know is if anyone can help tel me who George/Thomas or Sarah Sally parents or family were ?

I know its been said Tenat & plato were possible grandchildren of Edward Bukcland & diana Smith ,but I have never found anything to confirm or deny this or if so who their son was to link up father of George/Thomas ?

Yes, Sally may be an error. I was working from transcriptions in the Centre For Oxfordshire Studies.

I seem to remember that you said somewhere you had Barrington Buckland (presumably the one you mentioned earlier in this thread) as a musician. Am I remembering right? If so, I'd love to learn your source.

Everybody keep warm.

Hi - I have just been reading everyone's research on the Buckland family.
I have just started to research my family, and found out that Plato Buckland is my Great Great Grandfather.
I be grateful if anyone has information please?

How wonderful that you are in our Buckland family clan.  I am sure Tiggy can be of more assistance to you than I as she is descended from that line.  Happy researching.  Ann

Thank you. It has taken a few months and headaches to get here, but it has been worth it.
I should add that it was Plato who died in Marlow, not the Plato that went to the USA.

I look forward to hearing from you all, Kirsty

Hi Kirsty,
I lived near Marlow, Buckinghamshire and, in fact, the last job had prior to retiring in 1993 was in Marlow.  I remember the woodlands where the gypsies lived in Marlow.  Then instead of seeing travellers vans, I saw shacks and then as the years went by, these were replaced with brick houses.  I remember my father telling me that he had been warned by his father never to take the horse and cart through that area of Marlow as the gypsies lived there.  (Little did he know that his granny had been a gypsy) but he disregarded his Dad one day and he lost all the eggs he had on the cart!  Ann
