Title: Topping marriage 1919 - Workington?
Post by: am.gilbert on Saturday 01 November 08 21:08 GMT (UK)
Can anyone help with this one.  I have received an email from a relative saying they have found a
marriage record for William Newall Topping and Ethel D Owens in Jul-Sep 1919 6d 1426??

My Toppings are originally from Workington.  William Newall Topping lived in Leeds in the 1960's.  He was married to Daisy and I am wondering if that is what the D in Ethel D Owens stands for.

Anyway if anyone can help I'd appreciate it.  Thanks in advance.

Anne-Marie

Hi
FreeBMD has quite a few records for Newell/Newall Topping so it might be worth your looking through those before you buy a certificate for the 1919 one.
Do you know any of the children of William and Daisy?  Their birth registration should show the mother's maiden name so might help to prove or disprove that marriage in 1919.  Where was it registered?  6d is in the Midlands.

There were only two who were registered (birth) as Ethel D OWENS from 1870-1900

Births Sep 1888
OWENS    Ethel Daisy     Richmond, S    2a   374
Births Jun 1895
OWENS    Ethel Diana      Hereford    6a   490

so one of them was a Daisy.  Of course, this one was born near London and "your" marriage was in Birmingham.

I think the Hereford EDO may have married in Pontypridd in 1915.

I actually met William and Daisy when I was a child and they had a son Patrick and I have found him on the FreeBMD thanks to your help.

This site is amazing.  When I ask a question there is ALWAYS someone who helps and gives me a lead.

Many thanks for taking the time and trouble.  Really appreciate it.

Just as a little update.  Daisy had been married before and I've now found out she was Ethel Daisy Player originally.  I think she may have lost her first husband (Owen)in WW1.

Sorry I think my post was unclear.  I meant the surname Owens (I missed the 's' off).  She was originally married to William Ramsey Owens 1890-1917.  He was born in Ireland.
