Title: Sidcot (Quaker) School, Winscombe
Post by: JillStatton on Saturday 01 November 08 01:21 GMT (UK)
My WERE family, formerly from Bristol and later Devon, were Quakers which makes me wonder whether the DANBY family also were so inclined.

Sidcot School, Winscombe [some 5 miles from Weare] was established in 1699 by the Quakers (Society of Friends) and may have been attended by members of the WERE and DANBY families, from the earliest times.

I note that there are numerous publications of School Registers for Sidcot - but none on full view through google books. Has anyone access to these and would please check whether either of these surnames appear?

With thanks, Jill Statton, Adelaide, South Australia

Further to my earlier post, and for others who may be interested, Weston-super-Mare Library has the Sidcot School register publication  from 1808-1958 and have searched for me.  I have not yet found info for the earlier period.

Furthermore, Weston also have a list of Quakers at Sidcot, 1690-1990 compiled by Valerie Leimdorfer.

Hope this helps others interested in Quakers in the area.

Have you tried contacting the school?  I had ancestors working at the school in the 19c and the school archivist was very helpful.

Thank you, Adrian.  I have an enquiry pending, to the school for 18th Century records.
