I have obtained the discharge papers of a 70 year old Edward Trampleasure who was retired from the Royal Veterans Batallion in 1806 aged 70. It would appear he was discharged from Plymouth to his home town of Tavistock.
The reason for his discharge is given as 'old age, worn out'.
What kind of duties would such an old boy have had in the army?
I know that French prisoners were kept on hulks in Plymouth at the time but I doubt that the old guy, a sergeant at the time of discharge, could have done much to stop a concerted break out.
