Title: Bridgwater cemeteries
Post by: Denby1 on Wednesday 29 October 08 18:52 GMT (UK)
Does anyone know how I can find out the names of those buried in the cemeteries in Bridgwater and the surrounding area? Is the Somerset Records Office the best place or the Bridgwater Town Council?

Thanks.

hi, don't know if this helps, I too am trying to find this info and had some help from local undertakers H Biffen & Sons.. they have a copy of names, surnames only, of the old Wembden Road Cemetery..

Other wise I think it means a trip to Records Office in Taunton. try   www.somerset.gov for address, sorry I have not got it handy.

will come back here if I find anything new for you.

regards Denise

Hi there

You could try Sedgemoor District Council on www.sedgemoor.gov.uk

Their neighbours in Mendip are most helpful with queries. From their web site, here are some of the 'closed churchyards'

I do not know Bridgwater too well, but there is a cemetary at Bristol Road and one on the road out of Bridgwater to Minehead.

Closed Churchyard

A "Closed Churchyard" is generally taken to mean a churchyard which has been closed for burial by an Order in Council under the Burial Acts.

The Quakers Ground, Albert Street, Bridgwater

Holy Trinity Church, Hamp Street, Bridgwater

St John the Baptist Church, Church Street, Bridgwater

St Mary's Church, St Mary Street, Bridgwater

St Andrew's Church, Victoria Street, Burnham on Sea

St Mary's Church, Moorlinch

St Gregory's Church, Weare

St Mary's Church, North Petherton

All Saints Church, Otterhampton

St Mary's Church, Westonzoyland

All Saints Church, Durleigh

St John's Church, Axbridge

Wembdon Road Cemetery, Wembdon Road, Bridgwater

St Bartholomew's Church, East Lyng

La Retraite Burial Grounds, Priory Gardens, Burnham on Sea

St Mary's Church, Wedmore.

The following local/church councils have elected to receive grant aid towards the maintenance of their closed churchyards:

St Mary's Church, Berrow

St Michael's Church, Othery

Church of the Holy Cross, Mark

St Mary's Church, Woolavington

St Mary's Church, Cannington

St Leonard's Church, Shipham

St Mary's Church, East Brent

Thanks Bicker, I know the Quantocks Road one on way to Minehead... but not about Trinity in Hamp as a closed cemetary, this is the main area for my family.. thought they might be in Wembdon raod but as they were too poor for headstones I can't tell from just visiting the site..

If you do a google search on  'Wembdon Road Cemetery'. You will find that there has been a project which has detailed all readable inscriptions on gravestones and has photos of virtually every grave. There is also a mapping facility. Not every grave is photographed as I know of a cousins grave which is not featured, yet I know is there. It is great if you live along way away as you can see the headstones without visiting.
The Cemetery started in 1851 but closed back in the 1970-1980 period. Cant remember which year exactly as I was still a kid then.

If you position your cursor below the bottom [/quote] mark, you can add your text. It makes it very difficult for others to see if you are only re-quoting a previous post or trying to add something new to the thread. (I have highlighted your text addition in bold).

Then click on the button ‘Preview’ and scroll up to read what you have composed as a reply. If everything is OK, scroll back down and click ‘Post’.

Good luck!
