Research has shown that Great Uncle Matthew was deemed to have been enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers at Newcastle on the 2nd March 1916 , his service number was 78973. A copy of his service record shows that he was Called up for Service on 11th May 1918
Looking at the record I have interpretted it to read that he was posted to Northumberland Fusiliers Depot 4 on the 15th May, 1918
I have attached a copy of this part of his records because I have difficulty making out the rest.
He was transferred to the 15th Battalion Durham Light Infantry during September 1918 and was killed in action on the 23rd October 1918.
I would appreciate any comments about details of his various postings, but just wondered where he was between March 1916 and May 1918.

if you look at the bottom of the document, there is a small table for calculating time in the army
country from to
home 11-5-18 10.9.18
france 11-9-18 23.10.18
I suspect he signed up in 1916 under the derby scheme which with his circumstances meant that he didn't actually get called up until 1918
ie, he was at home until 11-5-1918

Many thanks for that Chris. Cant say I've heard of the Derby scheme. Matthew worked at the local Coal Mine so perhaps that had something to do with it.

Just did a Google of the Derby Scheme and came up with the following link http://www.1914-1918.net/derbyscheme.html
Explains the situation. Thanks again.
