Title: Royal Marines WW1
Post by: penilelly on Tuesday 28 October 08 16:02 GMT (UK)
Can anyone help me find info. on my Grandfather, James John Pearce b.1893 in Deal, Kent? His family moved to Bristol probably in 1904. He joined R.M. in WW1. Married Violet Fanny Williams in 1919 in Bristol. I should love to know of any ships he served on.

If you get his service records then you will find all the information you are looking for.

Thanks Alan,
It's his service record I don't have & I have tried to access them via Royal Marines Portsmouth but have had no success.
I also visited Deal where his father was stationed in late 1800's & early 1900's but there records have been lost, as have the 1901 census records for Deal!
Have you any more suggestions?
Regards Penilelly

I assume the records are held at the National archives, however as I am far from an expert I could be wrong but try there first.

Hi Penilelly

If you are still looking, the service records for Royal Marines are now available online at the National Archives and downloadable for a relatively small fee http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/royalmarines.asp

Thanks Casaguidi,
I have tried the RM archive but still no success! I know quite a bit about my ancestors but can't find any official info. about their miltary service. Have decided I must go myself to Kew!
Thanks again
