Title: John GAY of Midsomer Norton
Post by: Rubbish on Sunday 26 October 08 16:55 GMT (UK)
I am looking for information on John and Mary Gay who were the parents of Henry Gay of Midsomer Norton. Henry was baptised on 27 Oct 1707 and John was buried in MSN on 17 May 1729. There is an entry on the IGI for a marriage of John and Elizabeth in 1706, but this is incorrect. Can any Gay relations help?

Hi Rubbish (that just doesn't sound right!)

John Gay was one of my ancestors (through his granddaugter, Hester). I'm afraid I don't know any more than you already have (in the Register at his burial, he was described as John Gay, Gent. although his son Henry was a shoemaker))

I discovered him through the Rootsweb "Somerset Coalfields" site.

Steve,
Many thanks for your info. As there are no parish register entries for Midsomer Norton I believe before 1700, this will be difficult to go further back. However, I think I might contact Somerset Record Offfice about Bishop's Transcripts. I'll let you know if anything comes of  it.

Thanks Paul

I'd love to hear if you can find out anything else. I see your surname is Rogers - your'e not by any chance descended from the George Rogers who married Hester Gay are you?

Hi Steve,

Yes, I am. I have managed to get the Rogers family Tree, with the help of the Somerset Record Office,  back to a Nicholas Rogers who was born c 1595 - 1600. We cannot go any further back. How do you descend from Hester Gay?  If you would like to see the Rogers genealogical tables please forward your e-mail address and I will send them to you. Do you have the burial date of Henry Gay , Hester's father?

Hi Paul

I'm descended from George Rogers & Hester Gay through their daughter Abigail - she married a James Emery in Midsomer Norton in 1787. I would love to have the Rogers tree - I've sent a PM with my address.

Interestingly, James & Abigail had a granddaughter, Phoebe Ann Gait who married (second marriage - I'm descended from her first marriage) a George Rogers around 1847 - they settled in Stanton Drew. I've often wondered if the two Georges were related.

I've no more details on Henry Gay I'm afraid - all I know about him I've got from Rootsweb Somerset Coalfields Connections

New member, so please excuse if I don't get the form right...

Looking for details of Richard Rogers, my greatx3 grandfather, born in Midsomer Norton in 1797+-1. Married to Edith, born 1796. Is this the Rogers genealogy you have or a different one? I notice nearby Clutton has a 'Rogers Close' today!

Thanks,

Andrew

Hi Andrew

Most of what I have on the Rogers family of Midsomer Norton and Clutton comes from the research of Paul (under Rubbish, above). There only seems to be one Richard Rogers in his table, and he married Mercy Bird 5 Dec 1805 at Norton - he may not be connected to our branch as the baptismal records are missing from 1773 to 1783 and we can't be sure. I believe the Rogers name is fairly common in the Clutton area even today. It might be worth contacting Paul via a PM (you will need to post a couple more messages before you can do this), and he can fill you in on his research results

Re a marriage for parents of Henry Gay bp. 1707 Midsomer Norton:

What about John Gay married Mary Chares (aka Cheuers/Chevers) 14 February 1696/7 Stanton Prior?

This is the only near-relevant marriage of a John Gay and Mary I can find.

I know Stanton Prior is some distance from Midsomer Norton - but there is a baptism for a Mary Cheuers/Chevers 19 May 1672 Wellow, Somerset - daughter of Adam and Mary.  Wellow is not far from Midsomer Norton.

Maybe John Gay came from the Stanton Prior area.

Thanks pz40,

Paul and I have seen this and consider it most likely to be John's first marriage (after Mary's death he married Anne Jones in 1714 at High Littleton). Sadly there are so many defiencies in some registers in the period that finding John's baptism may prove impossible. I'm not convinced that John the cordwainer and the John Gay, gent. who died in  1729 are one and the same, but there aren't many other possibilities

Hi Steve

Good to hear from you - and that the Stanton Prior marriage is considered a possibility - though, I agree, it is by no means conclusive.

I am also an old Bristolian!

Good to see another OB on the board. I wonder if we may have been contemporaries - I was at the Lower School 1953-7 and Upper School 1957-63. My name (quite memorable) is the first one in my list of interests,

I meant an old Bristolian in the more general sense!  We are more or less contemporaries - but I was at the Red Maids' School from 1951 - 1958!

John Gay of Midsomer Norton was my 7th Great Grandfather.  My second great grandfather, also named John fought in the war for southern independence, America's civil war.  I don't have much information past that except when we came to America the Gay's had a plantation in North Carolina.

Hi Roy,

Are you descended from John Gay's sons Henry or John? My descent is from Henry who was also a shoemaker like his father. Recently I've looked again at the burial record of John Gay in 1729 and I'm now certain it does not say "gent" but "senr" ie. senior,

Descendant of Henry.  My Great Grand father was also named Steve.  Steve Sherrod Gay.  We haven't figured out where Sherrod came from.

I erroneously said that the Gay family had a plantation in North Carolina.  I was thinking of the Litton clan.  The Gay's arrived in Virginia I believe.

The Litton's have been traced back 17 generations.  One married a Windsor.

I seem to remember a mural tablet to some Gays in the church at Midsomer Norton.
Unfortunately it's always locked these days, so I have been unable to check it out.
I also remember being told in the '60s by the vicar that they were related to the Gay who was involved with the Beggar's Opera, although he provided no further details.
Incidentally I have a Gay in my ancestry, John Gay, buried Hemington 8th May 1702. Wife; Edith, buried Hemington 15th May 1689.
He was a bailiff, and seems to have rather exploited his office, if the 1670s cases in the Somerset Quarter Sessions are to be believed.
I don't know whether there is any connection between the families, it's not that far between the two parishes.
I have not been able to trace a baptism or marriage for my John Gay. His first children was born 16th January 1653/4, according to the Hemington PR.

Hi Andrew; Gay is quite a common name in North Somerset so it might be difficult to link them this far back. John Gay of the Beggars' Opera was born in Barnstaple, Devon in 1685,
