Hi Toni,
Have been reading some of the replies associated to the links you passed on. Can't remeber exactly which page I saw it on but there was a reference to a Joshua Beer. I have a copy of John Champion and Ann Beer's marriage certificate; married 31 Mar 1849 at Monkleigh Parish Church. The certificate was signed in the presence of Joshua Beer and William Beer. William Beer being the father of Ann.
C
-
Ann is he daughter of William Beer and Charlotte Wheeler
-
are you sure the witness was William Anns father and not William Anns brother ?
-
Difficult to say.
The certificate does not indicate the witness is either the father or brother. I have made an assumption that William is the father because it has recorded on the certificate Father; William Beer, Labourer.
C
-
marriage certs don't give relations to witnesses - witnesses can be anyone as long as they are old enough to understand what they are witnessing ::)
inidentally 31 March 1838 is when Philip Beer m. Eliza Parkhouse
-
Thanks Toni,
You've been really help. Until you made contact I did not have much on the BEER's. I'll add them to my website ASAP.
I have some photos of Monkleigh and a picture of Ann CHAMPION's gravestone on the site www.championfh.net (http://www.championfh.net)
Click on any of the main links on the front page, subsequent pages all have a left hand menu. Lok for the option 'Albums', click on this link for short cuts to CHAMPION Family documents etc. and Photos of Monkleigh.
C
-
are you descended from Ann then ?
-
Yes, Ann is my G G G Grandmother. My link is via Samuel CHAMPION.
-
Chris, Do you want the info from Toni's sc hunt... I have it on FTM. ;D
-
Yes please, that would be really helpful.
Thanks

Wozzle,
I have one mystery to resolve.
Samuel married a Mary Ann Chesters from Appledore. They had three children, Lilian, William Thomas and John James CHAMPION.
Lilian I have traced to the 1891 Census, but was unable to trace her on the 1901 Census.
William and John I have both found on the 1901 Census, and recently made contact with some of Williams descendants. John James I have had no luck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Woozle,
I seem to recall seeing something about Thirza (Thura) CHAMPION birth, but for the life of me have not been able to track back to this reference. I have a copy of the baptism record but have never been able to track down a birth certificate. Any chance you could assist with tracking a GRO reference for Thirza's birth certificate?
Also a second opinion please on Lilian CHAMPION please.
I have been do some searching this morning and stumbled across a Lilian BUSE aged 16 a general servant in the 1901 Census RG13/2160 F159 P41 for Bideford. The age is about right, Lilian CHAMPION was born 13 June 1885 in Bideford and I have not found any registered birth entries for a Lilian BUSE around 1884/85.
Lilian's Mother Mary CHAMPION died in 1895, her Father's sister Elizabeth CHAMPION married a Thomas BUSE on 13 Oct 1885 in Bideford. So I am beginning to wonder whether Lilian went to live with her Aunt after the death of her Mother and adopted the surname of BUSE for employment purposes. What do you think?
C
-
had a look for thirzas birth
for some reason cannot see it there
the only one i can find is in bideford in 1868
that is obviously not her
as she should have been regd in about 1855
i can see some of the other children but not her?
with regard to your other quetion
i too found the lilian buse but was not sure about it
it is possible i suppose
-
Thanks Woozle for having look.

Hey, I don't know if it's relevant to the conversation in this thread but I just thought i'd mention that I have Beer ancestors from Monkleigh.
My William Beer (born 1807) was living in Buckland Brewer on the 1841 census with his wife Hannah Balsdon.
On the 1851 census he is living back in Monkleigh with his family at 'Hamlet of Saltrens' (?).
Their children were:
Mary (b. 1837) (My ancestor)
William (b. 1839)
Maria (b. 1840)
Robert (b. 1844)
Charlotte Ann (b.1850)
If anyone thinks they have a link or any relevant information feel free to get in touch.

Hello - I realise all this dialogue was 2+ years ago but..........
I have a William CHAMPION who married Richorde Wyatt in Brixham 25 Oct 1630; their daughter Elinor was bap at Brixham 25 Oct 1631.
I know Monkleigh is North Devon, but if one of your Champions turned to fishing he could have easily been at Brixham sometimes if not permanently.
So has anyone lost/found a William Champion born around 1600?? :)
