According to the free bmd it has complete coverage for years 58, 59,61 and 62

I have searched the complete index's for 1860 but can find no sign of a marriage for an Isabella Colbeck/Coldbeck or Colebeck.

just seems odd not knowing which side of census they married?
What's lead you to these 2 names?

Thanks Patrish,Pauline.

Peter McClellan was with Isabella ? his wife 1861 census Liverpool 22 Peach Street.

RG9/2682 Folio 94 Page 15

Peter had married before this and his first wife Margaret had died 1858.
Young Margaret mentioned in 1861 census was not daughter of Isabella.

William McClellan 1853/56 was illegitimate son of Isabella nee Colebeck.

Peter died then Isabella married again 1864 to Joseph Birch Liverpool
Her name then was Isabella McClellan

Victoria,

Did you ever deduce who fathered William?

Isabella's employer in 1851 (John Stuart) was certainly a naughty boy in later life - he did a bunk c1871 with money taken from the his elder brother Henry's safe. Family papers say he went to America & was never heard of again. He left his wife & family in Liverpool. We have just established that he ended up in Chicago, where shortly after he had children by a Manx woman who had been a nanny in Liverpool.

I'm wondering if he had played the field earlier.....

John's middle brother was my husband's ancestor Peter Stuart, "the Ditton Doctor" - see http://www.homeoint.org/books3/stuart/italians.htm

Hi Fionah, still a mystery to me. I am of the opinion that perhaps Isabella may not have had any children :'( :'(
As William McClellan appeared in 1861 census living at 22 Peach Street Liverpool age ? 6 He vanished. In 1871 after Isabella married Joseph Birch William Colebeck age 15 Shop Boy born Liverpool appears. He is living with Joseph Birch 47 Car Driver born York and Isabella Birch 44 born Whitehaven.
Then when William Coldbeck ( Porter )age 23 bachelor marries Sarah Lancaster age 24 Spinster 23/10/1876
Living at St Andrew Street Liverpool His father`s name  is not entered on marriage certificate.
William & Sarah had X3 children all born in the workhouse Liverpool. William was never entered in any census records after marriage. He is mentioned in birth records of his children. In 1891 Sarah and children living in Vine Street Liverpool. Sarah transcribed as married but head of household. Isabella was never mentioned with any children of her own which was unual as women tendered to have large families. After death or Peter McClelland and his daughter Margaret did Isabella adopt? William giving him her surname. If so I am Mrs McClellan and not Mrs Colbeck :) :) I have sent off for numerous bmd certs for William McClellan & William Colbeck/Colebeck/Coldbeck etc. to no avail. What happened to William I wonder. :'(
