Hi,
Hope somebody can help on this one I've been pouring over new and old maps looking for this place. I've got it from, The Register of the Parochial Chapelry of St John-The-Divine, in Holme-in-Cliviger. This place is near Burnley, and Potoven or Pottoven is listed as the abode on some baptismal records I've been looking at. If you've any ideas whereabouts it is I'd be grateful.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Nigel

Aha ... I went to www.old-maps.co.uk and searched for Potoven, Lancashire; it came up with Pot Oven, Todmorden, on an 1848 map of Lancashire & Furness. However, I couldn't locate the equivalent location today! Todmorden's down the road from Cliviger, might it e the same place?

Hi,
On any of your maps can you see Holme Chapel just below Cliviger? Follow the road down and you should see Beril`s Green Wood and Royd wood on the opposite side. Pot Oven Farm and Pot Oven Barn were opposite Royd Wood. It was called Old Potoven on the old maps.
Try http://mario.lancashire.gov.uk/
Open Map Viewer and select Place search > Find a Parish > Cliviger .
Zoom in on Holme Chapel.
You can also view the historic maps on "select a map category"

According to the 1848 map on www.old-maps.co.uk, Old Potoven is about 500 yards south east from the chapel at Holme Chapel.
If you look for Holme Chapel on the site, the map which appears has a red rectangle shown. Old Potoven is just below the south eastern corner of the recatngle. Head south east once, then zoom in a couple of levels.
The modern OS map shows a building on the same site, but it seems to be missing when viewed in Google Earth.
