Title: Gateshead Fell 1800's, 1900s. Can I help anyone?
Post by: MIS on Saturday 25 October 08 11:40 BST (UK)
I'm not researching my own family tree (my mother has beaten me to that one!) but I moved to Gateshead and started to look at the history of my house and found names of people who lived here over the last couple of hundred years.  Through that I got in touch with a man in New Zealand who was searching for his ancestors - one of whom used to live in my house about 150 years ago!

So now, I'm helping him out with the Gateshead side of his family.

As I'm here, I'm happy to help anyone else with Gateshead relatives, particularly if they lived near Gateshead Fell (Sheriff Hill, Sodhouse Bank, Old Durham Road, Church Road, Durham Road etc). I can wander around and photograph things if anyone has addresses or headstones that they want to see.

Similarly, if anyone knows of any Oliver's in the Gateshead area I'd be thrilled to hear from you!

;D Hi Paula, well I am certainly related to the same William Oliver this is also exciting news for me as I have never yet come across any more connections to the Olivers I have William and Elizabeth's marriage entry and his father and mother in 1780 and of course census returns. my line goes from William and Elizabeth from their son George born in 1827 who married a Mary Ann Brown in 1855 then their son James born 1860 who married Mary Wilson and then to my grandfather Frederick born in 1888 who married Jemima Richmond Pringle in 1917 to my mother Irene Mary born in 1918.

So this is my one of my Maternal side's and I still go to Durham as I have one aunt and two cousins living in the North, I myself live in Surrey.

I am more than happy to pass my line onto you, but will need a little time to get it together, are you prepared for me to email you directly? and yes I would appreciate any photos of the area or of the ancestors if you friend has any.

Best wishes Lyn (Swallowtail)

Hi MIS,
You may be just the person I'm looking for!

I was born (1936) and raised on Windy Nook Road, right next to the Travelers' Rest (the cottage is pulled down now). My wife was born on Cannon Row, just north of the Old Cannon, and we were married at St John's.

After working all over the world, we have now retired in Texas, just on the west side of Houston, so It is difficult getting info of 'home.' I have a photo of my Great Grandparents gravestone in St John's; Joseph Foster Wales. It is lying on the ground right by the south-east corner of the church.

I'm struggling to find his father FORSTER WAILES (different spelling), but he at one time owned the original Three Tuns; not the one you see now. If you can find ANY information on FORSTER, or the family, I'd be greatful.

My grandmother was born on Sodhouse Bank, # 122, just up from the Three Tuns, (it's now a glaziers), but I have a photo of that.

Hi MIS,

You must tell me where you live, (maybe just the street), I'm so curious.

But here's a one for you, my great great grandfather FORSTER WAILES - or FOSTER WALES, or any combination, died Jun 1879 in Sheriff Hill. Can you find where he was buried?

Regards,       Rob Hall, Katy, TEXAS

Hi!
I know that area very well - I live on what used to be Sodhouse Bank and am a regular at the Three Tuns! I walked past Windy Nook Road on my way home from work tonight and saw where your house must have been. I know the glazier's shop too. It's a little further down the hill.

A while ago I had to write a history of the Tuns for the present landlord and I have this one mention of Forster:

"... his crown passed to Forster Wales (sp?) in around 1856. Forster was to run the Three Tuns for over 30 years until his death, when his wife Isabella became the first lady to run the pub". I found his name by searching archives in Gateshead library.

I'd hazard a guess that Forster is probably buried at St.Johns - there were no other churchyards around in this area at the time he would have died. I'll certainly have a look. The name does sound very familar!

Do you have any other names or dates and I'll see what I can dig up for you?

Welcome back to Gateshead - it's a small world these days, but much colder here than in Houston I'd imagine!

Paula.

Post by: rhall36 on Tuesday 09 December 08 22:03 GMT (UK)
Paula, that is good information.

On the 1871 census, he is clearly FORSTER WALES, and wife ISABELLA, but on the 1881 census the pub owner is "JABBA" WALES, so I've wondered if it is the same person (didn't even know if Jabba was male or female). Now on his death certificate 1879; he died in Sheriff Hill so is probably buried in St John's, but I know that graveyard like the back of my hand and there is no marker for him. Could you ask the Verger if they have plot records of where bodies were placed? Norman Harrison has been a 'fixture' at the church for 60 years and he may know.

And another one for you, at St Alban's, down Windy Nook Road, I took a photo of a tombstone in the north-west corner, some years back, thinking I could read it later but I can't - It's of Mary and ?William HALL. Could you copy that data some sunny day?

We left Sheriff Hill in 1964, but I have clear memories of it all.

Rob,
Unfortunately I have already spoken to the vicar at St. John's church - he said that any burial records before the 1960's were sent to Durham Record Office. He was also 'embarrassed to admit' that they don't have any plans at all so couldn't, given a name, tell you where in the churchyard that person was buried

You could email Durham Record Office : record.office@durham.gov.uk

Another option, but less likely is Gateshead East Cemetery, which was opened in the 1860's ... you'll probably remember it. It's on your right as you go into the town centre. The records there are held by Gateshead Registry office and they are incredibly helpful if you email them with a name, date of death (or burial), address and the name of the cemetery. When I asked them, they looked through their records straight away and emailed me back the next morning. You can contact them at :cemeteriesandcrematoria@gateshead.gov.uk

Please let me know if you manage to uncover anything and in the meantime I'll have a wander to St Albans this weekend and try and find the tombstone. Transcripts are held in Newcastle, but they're not posted online so it's easier to go down to the church and have a look!

Good luck!

Paula, I'll try and attach the photo at St Alban's, Windy Nook. I don't know if this is a relation; I'm just trying to piece families together. My grandfathe Robert Hall, accouding to two census' was from Heworth, and Felling respectively.

Incidentally, my father is still living, in Wrekenton, almost 95, but knows little of his  father.

If the attachment doesn't work, forgive me.

Thanks a million HM_Dava. I guessed as much. I know his death certificate shows his death as 1879 June 25.

I have a search going at Tyne & Wear Archives for his birth, but haven't heard anything in 3 weeks. (I know he was born in Newburn). I try to use Durham Register but find most of the info I'm looking for, (even when I know the answer), isn't on the computer yet, i.e. my wedding.

Foster Wales' death was reported by his son-in-law M. McNaughty, but can't ffind that name anywhere (to see who his wife was).

Hi Paula,I wonder if you are able to help with this Low Fell enquiry.
A John McAllum of Gateshead was married at Bethseda Chapel Melborne St, on the 12th October 1864 to Lucy Ann Forster, daughter of Mr John Forster of Gateshead Low Fell.
Free BMD has Lucy Ann McAllums death at Gateshead,September Quarter 1865.
My query is is there any info on who John McAllum was and is the death of Lucy Ann McAllum his wife or child.
Most of the McAllums in Newcastle belong to the one family and I was rather hoping that this particular John McAllum may have been the son of John Donkin McAllum (one of my brickwalls) ,born 3rd July 1815,parents Duncan McAllum (surgeon of Blackett St) and Eliza Donkin.Any help greatly appreciated.gereon :)

Fay,
I don't know if you still check this site, but I haven't forgotten about you! Do you have any other names or dates that I can use?

Jacqueline,
Do you know if you have any Robsons in Windy Nook? I found a gravestone this morning : Thomas Robson, d march 2nd 1890 age 72, maria his wife, d jan 20 1893 aged 74 and a few other members of the same family; Robert, Elizabeth Anne, Roger and Jane. I have a photo and full details if you think it might be helpful?

And gereon, I've only had time to have a quick look for you but I'll keep at it!

I work full time but the Tyne and Wear Archive service is open on a Saturday at the beginning of February. I'm happy to go down and stay there until they throw me out if anyone wants to give me further names and dates etc so I know what I'm looking for!

Cheers
Paula.

I do hope you are still available to do check ups.  I have been researching my family for quite some years but I have come to a complete brick wall with my 5xG Grandparents.  I have their death certificates and according to the one, James Stell died in Whickham in 1802 at the age of 78, he was also born in Whickham, this makes the birth  year 1724.
His wife was Jane Charlton, she died in Whickham in 1800 at the age of 65, making her birth year 1735 .
She was also born in Whickham.
Is Whickham near to Gateshead Fell?
Their church where they married and had their burial was St. Mary the Virgin, Whickham.
Religion:  Anglican.

I do hope you will be able to help me, I live in Holland so it makes it difficult for me to actually research in the area.
Thanking you and I do hope to hear from you,
Best Wishes, Denise

Hello Gary,
Thank you very much for answering my message so quickly, it was a real surprise!

I am trying to find out the actual birth or baptism dates for these ancestors plus the names of their parents.
James Stell and Jane Charlton married on the 1st April, 1760, confirmed via Durham Records Online, this is also
where I found their Death Records.  They went on to have 6 children.

I have also tried on the Bishops Transcripts for Durham but the records for Whickham don´t go back that far.

Is it possible that there are still gravestones for the Stell Family at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Whickham
do you think,

Best wishes, Denise (Stell)

Hi Denise

I assumed that if you got them back to 1724 that you had checked as much as you could on line. The parish records are held at Durham County Hall. It is possible that the Gravestones are still there but as to what condition they are would be guess work. I checked out the churchyard on google earth and there appears to be quite a few older stones around the main body of the church. I know where the church is but I have never been in the churchyard. As I don't live to far away I can call in and try and find any stones with Stell on them.

To Preshous and Denise.

I do know the area well, born in Gateshead Fell, and have visited the church in Whickham a couple of times. So I would like help, and offer a possible aide.

1. I would be interested in the 'other' Mary Hall in St Alban's Windy Nook (I was born on Windy Nook Road), and I have a relative who attends the church in Whickham.

2. The headstones at the church in Whickham are TERRIBLY eroded, so it may be difficult to read them. Actually, if I remember correctly some have worn completely thru. But my contact is T. W. Graham who lives in Whickam, and is a member of the church

Hello Gary and Rob,

Many thanks for your replies.  Yes, I have tried everything I can think of to find the records going back to the birth years but perhaps I could try the Durham County Hall although they won't have published anything online otherwise I would have come across them - that is the problem with living here, I can't just go and check through records, sometimes very frustrating!  In my family tree the Stell family were settled in Whickham for several generations.   Anyway, its great to have a new address to try, thank you.

As for the headstones, it was a "shot in the dark" I know as I can imagine, over the years there wouldn't be much left of inscriptions.  Still Rob, I would appreciate it if you could ask your contact, Mr. Graham,  for any information for me.

Best wishes to you both,
Denise

Regards to both of you,
Denise

Hello all, I have a set of fiche of the Whickham MIs which was transcribed by members of the N&DFHS in 1994, I believe.  According to the index there were no Stell family members buried there....I also have a fiche for the burials at Ryton...if this would be helpful, please give me specifics on look ups as there is actually no good index with this, altho it does cover from early 1700's to 1812.  Pat

Hi Pat

St Mary's, Whickham, was all but destroyed by fire in 1841 so it is quite possible that some stones were lost either as a result of the fire or the rebuilding of the present day church. That could explain the stones not being there to transcribe.

Hello Gary and Patrexjax,

I have always had this feeling that perhaps they did come from Washington, I actually researched this family of Stell's and did,  as you say, get back pretty far back into the 1600's.  If they aren't mentioned on the fiches it seems that I will have to try neighbouring areas.
The thing that put me off was the Death Record from DRO.

For both James Stell and wife Jane Charlton:-

Burials - Gateshead District
Location:  Whickham
Church:  St. Mary
Religion:  Anglican
James of Lowhand, died 5th of July 1802 aged 78.  Buried 7th July, 1802
Jane of Lowhand, died 3rd of January aged 65.   Buried 7th of January 1800

Is Ryton in the area?  I have printed maps but it isn't the same as being there.

I appreciate all your help,
Denise

Hi Denise

The reason i thought of the Stell's from Washington was because the nearest marriage date that I could find that would produce your James, was a Thomas Stell & Margaret Hutchinson married in 1695 in Washinton, via george bells transcripts. Ryton is, again, not far from Whickham. Just to  muddy the waters even further there is a Cuthbert Stell in hexham in 1632. Hexham is not a million miles from whickham. I will keep looking.

Hello Denise.....In answer to your question.....yes, Ryton parish is quite close to Whickham parish (bordering) and some of my folks bounced back and forth between those two parishes to have baptisms, weddings and burials.  I have always checked both parishes to see what they did for any given sacrament.  :o  I noticed that the IGI does show some Stell family being baptized in Whickham and there are also a large number in Gateshead - also close...If you have any specific look ups on baptisms before 1800 i Whickham or Ryton, let me know. In many cases, the specific area (NOT street!) that the family was living in at the time of the sacrament was recorded. This can help sort out family groups sometimes.  Pat

Gary and Patrexjax,

I have just been looking for all the notes I made of the Stell family of Washington - thank goodness I never throw anything away!
I have also got a Thomas Stell b. Washington married to Margaret Hutchinson b. Whickham to Gabriel Hutchinson and Margaret Row.. Married 25.04.1695 M000971, they had 6 children all born in Washington, P000971.
Thomas was b. 27.01.1667 in Washington to Thomas Stell and Elizabeth Coxon, Thomas had 5 siblings.
In Gateshead there was a John Stell who married Jane Johnson they also had 6 children.
I went back further with these families but couldn´t find a James anywhere!

This is why I went back to Whickham......James lived to a grand old age old age but his birth is a mystery.
Even on Durham Records Online there  isn´t anything about his birth-baptism.

By the way, with my notes I hadn´t anything on Stell´s of Ryton I think I had better try there.

These could possibly be the  parents of James, it is the correct
time frame in any case.  Please could you let me know where
you found them?

Refards, Denise

Thanks Gary,

The link got me straight onto the page.

I see you have Murray of Cumberland.

You don't by any chance have a Mary Murray that moved down to
Chorley, Lancashire.  Mary married John McHugh/McQue in 1870 in Chorley.
Her father was named Patrick Murray, he was deceased at the time of
the marriage but his profession was given as Agrigultural Labourer.
 I have the Marriage Certificate.

I'm stiil trying to track down my Murray ancestors. My GGG Grandfather came to Durham from Cumberland around 1839. Cumberland is a Murray hotspot so things take forever to find out.

Good morning!

Shame about the Murray Family Gary, thought I had better ask, you never know!

All of a sudden, I have found a Jane Charlton on IGI ch. 07.12.1735, Saint Nicholas, Durham.
She has 5 siblings and her parents are John Charlton and JANE.

James Stell and Jane Charlton had two sons, one Thomas and the other John.

I have also found a James Stell born in Keighley, Yorkshire. The birth year is 1818, too
early, he has father John.

I think I will stick with Thomas Stell who married Margaret Hutchinson as his parents although
there is no mention of birth/christening of a James Stell.
Have you any ideas about this?

Best wishes, Denise

Hi Denise

There is a James Stell born in Scotland c 1728 with a father as James. It might be worth checking out. It took me 2 years of searching close to home for one branch of my family only for me to find out they came down from scotland.
The joiner marriage index has a transcription of James & Janes marriage but what you might glean from that is pot luck it costs £2.50 to get the transcription.

Hi,
Just found this link and suspect I could keep you rather busy as I have a lot of relatives in the area.
My first is Thomas and Catherine Miller address at Blue Quarries, GAteshead in the 1851 census. They both died in 1854 at Gateshead Fell, leaving a family of five to fend for themselves. The eldest Bartholemew was just 14. the youngest three years old.Thomas was a Mason.
DO you recognise the names and is the area still standing.
thanks

Hi Lesley

The Blue Quarries area of Sheriffs Hill was demolished from 1920 to 1940. You can see some old photographs of the streets and houses at this link http://www.rootschat.com/links/05sn/  . There are a few Millers buried at St Johns church, but as yet no Thomas & Catherine c 1854, I still have about 50% of the gravestones to transcribe.
If you know where any of your Millers are buried let me know and I will check my database.

I live a stones throw from Blue Quarries.

Hi Paula

Sorry for not getting back to you but I have only just read your post dated Sunday 11th January - don't know what happened, why I missed it.

What can I tell you regarding names and dates then?

My GGG Grandparents Bridget and Patrick Mellon(Mellan) are living with their family at Bottle Houses, Bill Quay in 1881.  Then in 1891 and 1901 at Prospect Terrace.

I do not know Gateshead Fell, or Newcastle to be honest as I live in Birmingham, but from looking at photographs on Gateshead Council web site I believe where they lived was a "very poor" area.

My Grandfather was born in Brewery Lane in 1899.

I would guess that the area where my ancestors lived no longer exists.

Most of the marriages of my ancestors took place at St Patricks Chapel.

Patrick passed away in 1904 - I do not know where he is buried - would St Patricks be a possibility?

Regards

Fay

To Preshaus. Thanks for the offer of the gravestone photos - how do you send them? And whilst most of the Hall's in St John's won't be mine (ie there is a 'new' one Henry HALL near the south wall - not mine), all of the WALES headstones are my relatives.
Matthew WALES lived on Egremont Gardens, just off Sodhouse bank. And the Joseph Foster WALES stone right be the East entrance to the church, is not the original. The original was a high one and broke across the middle, so some of the data would be eliminated.

Hello,

My Gt Grandad was a clerk for the NER and moved to Low Fell from Darlington about 1884. He seemed to move about a lot with his job but always came back to Low Fell so I'm thinking he probably owned his own house at some point. In 1885 the address was Wesley Street, and between 1896 - 1899 they were at 13 Albert Drive. For the 1901 census they were at East Boldon, but in 1902 lived at 3 Tynevale Terrace, Gateshead, where he died of TB.

Does anyone know what these addresses were like in those days?

Colin

Thanks very much for the link. I managed to find 8 images which included a beautiful picture of the new park and the houses in 1906. There was also one for a house 2 doors away from where they lived. On google maps, it looks as though the houses are still there so a trip is not far away.

I'm originally from that area, and in the website "isee.gateshead.gov.uk" there is a phot of Church Road, looking East. I would guess the address must be on the right (North) side of the road. If the number from Sodhouse Bank, I knew the family of Billy Pharoh's live in the second or third cottage in 1942 - and they were old cottages then.

The 1895 Ordnance map shows three attached cottages, and then a 'detached' home. In 1895 there were no homes on the south side of Church Road (my father, born in 1914 remembers the homes being built on the right hand side - circa 1925), so your family must have lived in the cottages mentioned.

Hello,

I'm wondering if you could help me please?

A William Parkin (born Felling or Felling Shaw, c. 1826) married a Mary Brown (born Gateshead, c. 1828) at All Saints in Newcastle on 30th March 1851. On their marriage certificate, William's fathers details are given as John Parkin (deceased), occupation Waterman. Mary's father is William Brown, Viewer.

As William was born in Felling/Felling Shaw, I've been trying to find his father John but have been struggling.

I have found a John Parkin, aged 34 in the Gateshead Fell Lunatic Asylum in 1841. His occupation is given as 'P Mariner'. I'm presuming the P stands for Past as those in the Asylum who have any occupations against them are all preceded with the letter P? He was not born in County Durham.

I can't seem to find this John in the 1851 census and am wondering if this may be Williams father?

I'm wondering if you have come across any headstones for a John Parkin which may fit with this please?

Many thanks.  :)

Hi Jeffery

I have found only one gravestone for Parkin and that is for a Eleanor died 1894 aged 54 and her husband Joseph who died 1907 aged 67. They are buried at Gateshead East cemetery. You say that John Parkin was shown as deceased on the 1851 marriage entry so he could not be buried in Gateshead East as that was not opened until 1862. I have checked my database for the surrounding church graveyards but no Parkins.  I assume that you came across the FreeBDM entry for a John Parkin who died in 1849 in Gateshead, could he be your's.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for that...............yes, I found a death for a John Parkin in 1849 in Gateshead on FreeBMD and as I couldn't find him anywhere in the 1851 census (together with John Parkin being deceased by the time his son married), I thought he was perhaps the most likely candidate.

I was working on the assumption (correct or otherwise) that Mariner and Waterman could be interchangable.

Have you any idea where people from the asylum were buried at that time? Would they have been unmarked graves do you think?

If John died in the asylum, is his death certificate likely to provide any useful info with regards to his relatives/family or would it just be asylum details?  ???

A couple of bits of info which may, or may not be relevant. I remember a Mr & Mrs PARKIN lived on Glynwood Gardens circa 1950. I was young so don't know their first names.

I also remember the 'Sylum Square on Church Road before it was demolished. And on the 1895 Ordnance map of Sheriff Hill, it shows "Potter's Field' on Sodhouse Bank, just north of Blue Quarries Road. Could this be where the deceased inmates were buried? In fact, on one of the buildings on the west sde of Sodhouse Bank, there is an inscription Potter's Field 1822.

Hi Jeffery

There is a photograph & a brief history of the asylum at this link http://www.rootschat.com/links/05z3/
I am guessing as regard the burial place for the inmate's but St Johns would be the logical place.
I would imagine not many inmates received a burial with a headstone. As for the death certificate I would think a member of staff would have been the person to report the death.

Added: A waterman was apparently a ferryman.

I understand from my father, who was born in 1914, he remembers these houses, (on the south side of the road) and Rosewood Gardens, being built circa 1920. As I said before, on the 1895 Ordnace map, the only 4 cottages on Church Road on the north side of the road. I remember these cottages from when I went to Sheriff Hill Primary School 1941 - 1945.

The asylum, after closing down, was used to house really poor people, and I remeber visiting relatives there, circa 1942. It was commonly called the'Sylum Square.'

Hi, I wonder if you or anyone can help!  I'm researching the Waters family from Gateshead Fell in the late 1780's and into about 1840 in particular Joseph born about 1783 and his family - Alexander, William, Joseph, Mark, Mary, Jane, James, Margaret and Thomas all born between 1813 - 1835 with the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th children born in High Felling and baptized in High Felling Weslyan Methodist Chapel.  I feel sure that Joseph had brothers/sisters and one of them may have had a daughter Sarah Waters born about 1826 in High Felling. Any information about this family would be appreciated. Regards, Jess

Thanks for the photo Preshous, do you mean no. 7 is the house or the cottage just in the picture on the left, according to google map the cottage to the left is No. 7 but not sure how accurate it is. I have now confirmed from the Gateshead electoral rolls that the Mangan Family were living at No. 7 Church Road at least until 1928, possibly longer as my Great Grandfather Christopher Mangan died 1931 and his Wife Mary 1930 and by that time all of their children had married and were living elsewhere.
On another matter has anyone heard of Mill Cottage Sheriff Hill as my Great Aunt Agnes Kelly, Nee Mangan, was living there with my Great Uncle Aaron Kelly and their family early 1920's, have a number of Baptism records for their children from St Oswalds RC Church Wrekenton from the early 1920's which all show Mill Cottage as their parents Agnes and Aaron's home.

Hi KJP

The house with the for sale sign is number 7 Church Road. Looking at OS maps the house's that you see today do not appear until after 1930 indeed old maps show that they were the first buildings to occupy the site since 1865.
I can only assume that the previous number 7 Church Road was elswhere on church road and was demolished prior to the new number 7 being built.

Hi Gary

Thank you so much for your reply.  Unfortunatley I don't think this is one of my Waters family.  The only Thomas I can find married to Isabella was born in Cumberland.

I think that my Joseph left Gateshead Fell probably around the time of the 1810 miners strike but returned with his bride and brought up his family there but left again possibly at the time of the 1831 strike.  By the 1841 census they were living in Dewley.

The rest of Joseph's family [I assume he had brothers and sisters] possibly stayed around the 'Fell' area but I can only find a Thomas Waters in Wrekenton born about the same time as Joseph.  James Waters and Margaret Spence may have been his parents but I have no solid evidence of this.

It's like looking for a needle in a haystack...I had no idea there were so many 'Waters' around!

Best regards
Jess

Hello MIS, I've been doing some research for a relative whose ancestors came to Sydney from Durham in the 1880s. He was John Brown and worked at the Sheriff Hill Pottery Factory. He married Jane Best 1866 in Gateshead. I've found them in 1871 (Sheriff hill west side schedule 6) and 1881 census returns, but with so many of those names around, confirming their parents has been diffiicult. I was hoping you may get a chance to check the marriage register and see if their parents are listed (and anything else useful).
Marriage is John BROWN and Jane BEST; at Gateshead in December quarter 1866. Registered Vol 10a, page 894.
Really appreciate any assist.

To Jeffery and Gary in particular. While I had previeously suggested that the inmates of the Sheriff hill Asylum would be buied ont the site oh Hodkin Park; because of the wall marker Potters ? on Sodhouse Bank. But I was looking at St Jhon's burial records, and came across a George HALL, (hopefully not my relation).

He died at the Sheriff Hill Asylum in 1858 Oct, aged 39, and was buried at St John's. So maybe the inmates were burried at St John's

As you know I have photographed all the available gravestones at St Johns and I can not see one for the George Hall you mention. I have a feeling that any one from the asylum buried in St Johns would have been done so in an unmarked grave.

I dont have any photographs of McNally gravestones, but I have quite a few Atkinsons.
If you have names and dates I will check them out.

Also a Gilbert Miller died 4th qtr 1863.

Gary

Hi,
I was playing on the internet when I found this post and just got sooooooo excited, Eleanor Miller (nee Arnell) was daughter of Joseph Arnell ( a weaver) who died in Wrekenton Assylum. Joseph was born c1759 and died in 1844 - he is as far back as I have managed to trace. Any and all information regarding Arnell's / Millers would be very greatfully received. The Arnell's were "big" methodists and Joseph's sons from his first marriage, Joseph and Thomas were stonemasons. I'm hoping to track down a few more ancestors !
Thanks,
Louise

Hi Louise

Welcome to RootsChat.

I have no connection with Millers/Arnell. I photograph and transcribe gravestones as a hobby. I feel that the photo I have for Eleanor Miller is not the daughter of your Joseph, the sums don't add up. You say your Joseph died in 1844 and that would have made him 85 when the Eleanor I have was born. Her grandfather perhaps. I fear there will not be a gravestone for Your Joseph. You are more than welcome to any photos I have for Millers/Arnsell

Hi Gary, Thanks for your quick reply. You're right Eleanor is the granddaughter of Joseph (c1759) her father was also called Joseph (1806) and in my haste to reply I got them muddled ! Thus far I have drawn a blank regarding Joseph 1759, I have been in touch with the archives etc but all records regarding inmates no longer exist. I did get a copy of Joseph's death certificate though which is how I made the link to the asylum. I would be really grateful if I could have copies of any Arnell/ Miller headstones you have transcribed/photographed. Shall I send my email address - I'm not really sure of the best way to do it ?! Thanks again and look forward to hearing from you soon. Louise

Hi Gary. I'd like to ask for any photos of the gravestones in St John's, Sheriff Hill. On the occasional visits back to gateshead, I've always visited St John's and taken some photos. the two family names I'm interested in are WALES and HALL.

I have photos of Robert W. WALES d. 1946, Matthew WALES d. 1966 (and his wife and daughter), Joseph Foster WALES d. 1933 (and his wife). The only HALL photo is Henry HALL d. 1984, but no relation, but not my relation.

I have met every Rector of St John's since 1947, up until Rev Tully left, and even had our Rector from Texas go and give a service there.

Hi I am looking for information on any Goodfellows or Davidsons buried in St Albans, Windy Nook.
In particular my G/ Grandparents Matthew Goodfellow b1867 & Frances Goodfellow b1871
Also my G/Parents William Francis Davidson b1898 d1941? & Ann Catherine Davidson (nee Goodfellow) b 1903 d1939?.

My mother seems to think that at one time there were gravestones for them in St Albans but they have been removed (possibly water / flooding damage)
Any information would be most helpful

Welcome to RootsChat.
No joy with your Matthew & Frances Goodfellow at St Albans.
I have a photograph for John Goodfellow died 1878 aged 43 & his wife Ann Catherine died 1904 aged 71.
There are 3 stones for Davidson's at St Albans but none of them for your William & Ann.
There are a few unreadable stone at St Albans.

Hi Gary

Thanks very much for your quick reply and the link to that excellent site. I have ordered some images to see if i can glean anything from them.

Did my mention of headstones possibly being removed mean anything to you (ie do you think that it was possible) and if so do you have any idea who I could contact to find out more. Apologies for all the questions but I really am a novice at this

ps I have converted the list of St albans headstones into an Excel  spreadsheet for easier reference - if a copy would be of any use to you please let me know
Kind Regards

Hi Ian

I could see no evidence of gravestones being removed. The graveyard is quite small and there appears to be a good coverage of gravestones IE no obvious areas without gravestones. The graveyard is actually raised above the surrounding area and also slopes from south (high point) to north (low point). It could well be the gravestone may be laid face down  :'(. Your images should be en route to you.

To Anthony Pearson. Maybe this will help you to work backwards; but I knew a Pearson family in Sheriff Hill around 1948. I don't remember the parents' names but their only child was Pauline (probably born around 1942). I think the father lost a leg, or crippled, in WW2 as he always walked with a limp. I would imagine Pauline was baptized at St. John's, Sheriff Hill.

My family lived in the area for many years. They were called SMITH.
Several of them including my grandfather, and g.g grandfather had the Christian name Robson.
They lived Latterly in Robson St Low Fell, and prior to Lowreys Lane.
They attended St Helens and St Johns.

I wondered if anyone might know where Hayes Cottages Windy Nook were please.
My g. grandfather William Smith (son of Robson Smith) was born there in September 1861.
I also cannot find his death. It was between 1901 and 1911 and 0n 1901 his address was Ivy Houses, Eighton Banks Lamesley. He is there with his wife Sarah and  5 children, but not on the 1911 by which time the rest of his family are back at Lowreys Lane.

Appreciate any help thank you.

Hi Saffy

If you click on this link http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/ and when it loads, it can be slow at times, click on the search tab and on the next page that opens enter NE10 9RP in the keyword box and click search it should take you to a modern day map. If you choose the 1938-1950 map from the select map drop down you should see Hays Cottages. They don't appear on later maps.

Added: There are 2 potential deaths in FreeBMD in Gateshead 1; 1905 aged 47. 2; 1908 aged 45.

Hi there,

I'm trying to trace a Dorothy Wake. I've already checked the Durham online records which show:
Burials, Gateshead District - Record Number: 457692.2
Location: Gateshead Fell
Church: St. John
Religion: Anglican
11 Apr 1865 Dorothy Wake, of Wreckenton, age: 25
But to tie her in I really need to know if there are any connected family names on the gravestone if one exists.

Any help you can give would be truly appreciated.

But couldnt find any graves, and dont think I can check the registers on line.

I have checked all my transcriptions for St John plenty of smiths but not a William in sight. If he died at Eighton Banks then he could be buried at St Thomas, Saltwell Road & Gateshead East could be possibilities. If you have a wifes name for William I will look out for him.

Opps sorry about the wife. I see she is called Sarah. Have you got a dob for Sarah??

Hi again,
I know all my Smiths were buried in St Johns in my mums time. Her little brother Norman was buried there in 1930. (he was 5) I think my Grandmas sister Jane Williams in 1909 (she was only 15)..
I dont know who else exactly but Smiths and Williams and McTears.

William Smith was born Hays Cottages 11.9.1861.
He was married to Sarah Jane Hall from Middlesbrough in Ven Bede 1888.
She took herself and their younger 3 children up to Cardenden Fife after his death.
To work the pit there.

I know William was alive on the 1901 at Ivy. I know she was widowed on 1911 at 11a Lowerys Lane.
Sometime shortly after the 1911 was when they went to Scotland. She died there in 1932.

Any help much appreciated, and again Thank you.

Hi. My 3x great grandfather was John Gibson. He was a 'Publican' and after many months of searching I discovered last night (through Ward's directory) that the pub was The Ship, Pelaw Main. He died in 1843 and the pub was taken over by his wife, Eleanor. They lived in Milnew Quay and I originally guessed that the pub was The Staithe Inn because the Parson and White directory has the entry 'John Gibson, Ship Launch' Malune Quay. Do you know anything about The Ship and whether it was the same pub as The Staithe House? I live in Wales so don't know the area at all. My family name is Bousfield but I am also researching Willoughby (I think Dorothy lived in Church Street, Sheriff Hill), Jeffells and Jameson. (I have given up on Brown and Robson).
Best regards

Hi

Are you still able to help withall things Gateshead?

Mine is an enquiry related to a little history of the immediate surrounds.

My GGgparents were publican of the Three Tuns Inn on Sodhouse Bank in Gateshead in the 1890s. They were Joseph and Elizabeth Gladstone who eventually migrated to Australia in 1921 after the war.

My GGGgf father Ben Clough (Joseph's father in law) and his wife Jane also lived there. Ben was a former (retired) inn keeper at the Ladourne Hold Coach & Horses, Birtley.

All the maps I have view of the area  do not show where Sodhouse Bank was.

Are you able to direct me to a website where I could get a map of the old Gateshead of this time?

I would love to find reference for bit of history about the pub as well if possible. All I know is that it was a fairly poor area at this time.

Family history has it that the business was quite troublesome and many patrons did not honour their tabs. In fact we still have an old  violin in the family which was left as payment!

I can't wait to visit Gateshead and hear those soft Geordie accents like my grandfather's (long passed) again. I hope people still have them - maybe next year???

Thanks in anticipation

Porgi

Porgi, we have something in common, because my ancestors were also owners of The Three Tuns, on Sodhouse Bank, circa 1856 - 1886. On the 1871 census, Sodhouse Bank is referred to as Sheriff Hill, West Side, but the address is clear as The Three Tuns (Public House). My Grandmother was born (1895), just up 'the bank,' and I was born just off the top of the bank (1936).
There is a photo of the old Three Tuns in the Gateshead archives, showing a woman standing out front - has to be your, or my, GGgrandmother.
You can get a good 1895 Ordnance Survey Map of Sheriff Hill from www.alangodfrey.co.uk which shows it as Sodhouse Bank.
Also suggest you read Catherine Cookson's book, "The Whip," which makes mention, several times about 'The Tuns' at Gateshead Fell.

Hi Porgi
Since posting my enquiry about the Ship Inn, Milnew Quay (now Bill Quay) I have found a photo of it on the website iSeeGateshead which has many many photos of this area and I have been sent the pub on an old map courtesy of Ken Roddam on the Northumberland and Durham Family History Society Forum.
Good luck with your hunting.

Thankyou for your leads and followups.

I am fascinated with the history of Gateshead and the people who lived there.

As I said I can't wait to visit. I do believe it was quite a hard existence. My own ancestors seem to have changed address and occupations with every census.

What a brilliant coincidence to connect with a descendant of another previous publican of The Three Tuns a half a world away in the opposite direction to where I live in Melbourne (Aus)!!!

The world really is a small place.

From looking at the region from street level it appears that many of the period buildings have been retained (where possible).

Many of the addresses where "the Gladstones" lived are still there.

She had sisters Catherine born 1858 and Isabella born 27th June 1853 Hillgate.
I have never found them in a census.

Hello Paula

Is your offer of assistance in the Gateshead Fell area still on?

I am researching my family (Robson). In St John's at Gateshead Fell there is a Robson family plot and I would love some photos of the headstones. Unfortunately I have no family left in Gateshead that I know (or know of for that matter). All my Robsons came from around Gateshead (me too!) back to c.1850 and Chester-le-Street before that.

We moved to Australia when I was 8.

I can provide you with loads of info. My e-mail is *

She was Sarah Gildart & was buried in St Thomas's 2nd July 1884.
Our Robsons were also in Windy Nook by the Bay Inn/Bayhorse Inn. &

If the offer is still there, I would love to know if there is a gravestone for my 3x great grandparents, John and Dorothy Bowsfield/Bousfield/Busfield/Bushfield, in St John's Gateshead Fell. Dorothy died in 1846 and John in 1850. I have completed write-ups on both and will try to attach Dorothy's here but John's is 88MB and therefore too big a file. I aim happy to share it if anyone knows of a method to swap e-mail addresses?
