Title: Nazareth House, Lenton
Post by: copperbeech5 on Friday 24 October 08 21:54 BST (UK)
Hi,

I have just got a death certificate for a relative, and she died at Nazareth House U.S.D.  Can anyone enlighten me about Nazareth House, and what does the U.S.D stand for?  Oddly in the same batch I have another death cert  with the place of death as 45 Waterway St, U.S.D.

Any help much appreciated!

Thanks,
Copperbeech5

I can't help with Nazareth House, but it does ring a bell for some reason, I'll keep digging on that one, but USD stands for Urban Sanitary District, which was the governing body responsible for public health matters, I believe.

Hope that helps

Hi Suz and BG,
Thank you for that wonderful site.
I worked at the Queens Medical Centre for several years, and regularly went past Nazareth House. I never realised what lay at the back of the facade - until now! Fascinating!

If you haven't come across this before, this website it tells you more about Nottingham as a county, but it can also be searched by locality within a county e.g. Lenton, Basford, Sherwood etc. You can also search for information on any county in Britain - that's where I first came across Urban Sanitary Divisions.

I've found really interesting, so I thought I'd share it:-

Hi GB,
I have come across the site, but I've never looked at it in detail with regard to Nottingham. :-[ So, thank you giving me the opportunity to do so.
The information with regard to the early 1801 - 1831 census is interesting - new houses, etc etc
My husband's ancestor was the first Sanitary Inspector in Nottingham (Inspector of Nuisances) and I have a wonderful pamphlett (dated 1875) he wrote describing all the back to back housing and courts in Nottingham 1850 -1875. I was given this years ago, and I think it's what prompted me to start doing family history. Fascinating! (*If anyone is interested there is a copy in the Nottingham Local Studies Library).
Once again, thanks for the link :)

I have also found an ancestor who died as an 'inmate' of Nazareth House - in 1901.  I am trying to find out what sort of place it was then.  My relative's brother was priest at Holy Trinity church in Newark and I get a sense that Nazareth House was a sort of nursing home run by Catholic nuns?

Any help anyone.  I have been unsuccessful in emailing Pauline Wroe of the local history group.

Hi Carol,

Welcome to Rootschat!

I think you have hit the nail on the head, I think the house was a precursor to the National Health hospital.

It is worth looking at some of the links that others others have suggested, all very interesting.

Best wishes,
